I want to create an intra-company website for my co-workers to rate/review widgets. It will not be a commercial venture. Is there is a free or free-ish way to do this?

How do I design a personal website/web portfolio that will dazzle, amaze, or at least intrigue everyone from professional web developers to non-technical senior level types outside the field and convince them that I do indeed, have the skills to pay the bills.

I work for an established technical company moving into the web space and we need to decide whether we're going to use Java or .Net for an emerging web platform. Where can I find non-frothing arguments from reputable sources?

I found a great Java programming site awhile back. I was given a programming task and could get immediate feedback on whether or not it was correct. Tasks were things like, test if two integers are equal and 'reverse a string'. It was targeted toward learning .. but I seem to recall the tasks had advancing levels of complexity. This is not Java BlackBelt. I can't believe I didn't bookmark it.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

[Website development filter] I have developed a site for a client. He wanted something that shows a picture with text that changes every few seconds so I created a GIF that does this. Now he says that he wants it to pause on mouseover or a click. How do I do this?

I'm starting a new project at work rewriting a web application from scratch. We want to rewrite it in Java for a number of reasons that aren't really important. I've spent the last few months off and on researching web frameworks, but I haven't got a really good handle on how the web-development community feels about them. Help me choose!

I have been asked to write a database application that will be running in a storefront situation and will allow the user to enter data on what is sold (in this case, bicycles and bicycle accessories and parts) and generate basic bookkeeping reports (i.e. end-of-day sales, quarterly sales, that sort of thing.)

I'm at my wit's end. I've been trying to configure tomcat (through apache 2 using mod_jk) to automatically re-direct all traffic to HTTPS from HTTP. More boring technical details to follow.

Can anyone recommend a program (in say perl or java or something) that will execute on my linux web server and a) slurp the file references in the pages (html, php) and b) compare them to the actual files in my web root tree giving me a list of all of the unreferenced files (not referenced on public web pages)? I want to clean up this junky file system, but I don't want to break any links and I inherited the mess. Thanks.

Can anyone suggest a book, website, etc. that describes the process of breaking a problem down in order to write a program. I have struggled for far too long trying to figure out how to write a program from scratch only to be stumped by the logic involved.
This question, I think, is outside of a specific language or philosophy (Java, OOP, et al.). It's just something I haven't been able to get my head around.

I have been looking at changing my web development focus from Windows/ASP/.NET to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) because my gut is telling me that this is where things are going. Oh, Java should be in there as well.
What's the skinny on LAMP in the real world (Netcraft
surveys aside)? Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java? Is the open source thing really sticking?
