I have two (possibly naive) questions about Java that I'm looking for a 10,000 foot view on. First, what are the preferred libraries are for maths and charting? Second, what are the distinguishing points between alternative JVM languages? [more inside]

I found a great Java programming site awhile back. I was given a programming task and could get immediate feedback on whether or not it was correct. Tasks were things like, test if two integers are equal and 'reverse a string'. It was targeted toward learning .. but I seem to recall the tasks had advancing levels of complexity. This is not Java BlackBelt. I can't believe I didn't bookmark it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

[Website development filter] I have developed a site for a client. He wanted something that shows a picture with text that changes every few seconds so I created a GIF that does this. Now he says that he wants it to pause on mouseover or a click. How do I do this? [more inside]

I'm starting a new project at work rewriting a web application from scratch. We want to rewrite it in Java for a number of reasons that aren't really important. I've spent the last few months off and on researching web frameworks, but I haven't got a really good handle on how the web-development community feels about them. Help me choose! [more inside]

I have what is to me an extremely complex thing that I would like JavaScript on a webpage to do. It's related to this question I asked previously, but I've added a new complication. I understand that this may sound fairly customized. I have a feeling, though, that for someone who programs Javascript, these issues are probably both extremely common and extremely simple, which is why I'm asking here ... since perfecting this quirk could really help my efficiency. Okay, so I have a java program that's supposed to run in the background all the time. The problem is that the JVM allocates all the memory it can use, and then just sits there taking up a half-gig of ram. Is there any way I can get the thing to GC aggressively and release memory back to the system when it's done? [more inside]
