What are some PVO/NGO that will enable me to volunteer in the relief effort in Japan? (I am willing to pay for my own air fare/accommodations/etc). Also, in terms of training, what are some programs or certifications that will help train/prepare me for going overseas?
Why do the reactor buildings at Fukushima Daiichi have that blue-and-white pattern? It looks like it might have a purpose, but I also find it beautiful. I don't mean to be insensitive to the current crisis, but I'd like to understand. I don't watch a lot of TV news, so I may have missed it there. Googling has proven unsuccessful.

How can I help Japan when I am broke :( [more inside]
First of all, I am deeply sympathetic to the disaster in Japan, so I am sorry if this is tacky. But I was already looking to buy a new Honda within the next few months and want to know if because of the circumstances I should jump on it now. [more inside]
Is there any meaningful way to compare the possible radiation releases due to the damaged Japanese nuke plant with the radiation released by the air and sea bursts of the U.S. nuclear weapons testing in the 40s, 50s, and 60s? [more inside]

IF 1 or 2 or even 3 nuclear reactors in Japan meltdown in what is already being called a potentially worse disaster than Chernobyl, where will the fallout travel based on current prevailing wind and airflow models? I would specifically like information about how this may affect Hawaii where I live. [more inside]

Japan has suffered an unprecedented disaster. I have no job, no money, no insurance, no college degree. Is there any way I can volunteer to go and help rebuild, in any way? Some organization that will send me?

Are there any cheaper alternatives to the Japan Rail Pass? For two adults traveling mainly around Tokyo, as well as a few days in Osaka and one day trip to Nara, for a total of 10 days. *Bonus question - what are the best places in these cities to see contemporary Japanese art?
Please suggest some fun, affordable places to go and things for my boyfriend and me to do on the weekends! Location-specific ideas would be especially appreciated. We live in Ibaraki prefecture in Japan, about an hour by train from Tokyo. Slightly long list of preferences and details inside. [more inside]
Need help identifying this Japanese game show... and hopefully finding a clip online. [more inside]
Japan-themed gift for a 12 year old boy. He's interested in anime, video games, and all things Japanese (even though he doesn't really know that much about Japan). A book with lots of photos would be great, but adult ones have too many words, and kids ones have too little real info. This book looks perfect, but it's not releasing until this summer.
Totally failing at finding a series of videos of a Japanese man in a jumpsuit and hardhat who has invented several musical instruments based on solenioids. Anybody know what I'm talking about and/or where to find them?
Once upon a time I saw a few episodes of a japanese TV show about a girl who runs an okonomiyaki restaurant (I think?) in Japan who travels the country with her cast-iron griddle looking for her father. Every episode ends with her in a cook-off against some random person. It was on TV in the Bay Area and subtitled. What the heck was this show? It has defeated even my powerful google-fu.
Antidepressant question: Milnacipran? I'd never heard of it, but I'll likely transition from venlafaxine (Effexor) to milnacipran (brand names Toledomin, Savella, Ixel etc.) soon due to an upcoming move (from US) to Japan. Venlafaxine is not available in Japan. [more inside]

I'm visiting Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Russia and Mongolia in the course of a backpacking trip starting next month. I want to take these medicines with me, but am finding it hard to find info about restricted drugs in these countries. Can you help? [more inside]
We're planning a trip to go to Japan, and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to go during tsuyu (the rainy season). We'd be mainly based in Kyoto for the days we're there. Looking for some advice and anecdotal stories, and whether you think it'd be worth it. [more inside]

Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for a sushi first-timer?
NYC-foodie-filter: A friend of mine wants to try sushi for the very first time. The game plan is to order a couple of pieces as an appetizer and either proceed to a full entree if she enjoys it or bail and order something different if it turns out that raw fish is not to her liking. Can anyone recommend a Japanese restaurant with equally strong sushi and non-sushi menus for this culinary adventure? I'd prefer a place in Manhattan or Queens, easily accessible from Midtown Manhattan and reasonably priced. Not too fancy. [more inside]
