I am planning a big trip this summer to Japan and Australia, departing from Belgium. I have 2 months to travel and this is going to be a 'once in a lifetime' experience. When I get back I know it will be a long time until I can do a trip like that. [more inside]
I'm headed to Oita, Japan next weekend for a short trip. Any recommendations on which towns to visit, or suggestions for specific restaurants or non-onsen activities?
Hi So once upon a time I saw a music video in which will.i.am and fergie apperead and will.i.am was driving through what I thought was Japan. Has anyone an idea which song this could be? Regards marius
I'm going to Tokyo in the fall. I'm allergic to soy. It is an allergy triggered by the soy protein, which means that tofu and edamame are not OK but soy sauce is because the protein is denatured. (This is common for people who are allergic to soy - I am no special snowflake.) The easy solution would seem to be to live on yakitori and yakiniku...but I'm also a vegetarian. Difficulty level = 11! [more inside]
I recently saw Rashōmon, and was wondering if the hive-mind had suggestions for more (live-action, not anime) Japanese movies that are black and white, but set in more modern-ish times? [more inside]
So Tuft & Needle and the like are pretty cool and exciting, except I live in Japan. What options, if any, do I have for a Double-size good memory foam mattress in Japan? Like, not just a topper.
Hello all, I'm looking at being in Takayama for Obon Festival this year, but I can't find any information on the dates they celebrate it or what exactly they do for it. I've searched in both English and Japanese, but my Japanese-language search skills are terrible. Any information you all could provide would be extremely helpful! Thank you. :) Best, Joe
The Obon festival occurs in both July and August in Japan, with different regions choosing different dates. I'll be in Tokyo in August, but Tokyo celebrates in July... does anyone have any recommendations for where I should travel in Japan for the days of the Obon festival that would be celebrating in August? :) Can bullet train anywhere. Bonus points for great scenery and extensive Obon celebrations.
I'm looking for AirBnBs for international travel, probably especially for Asia particularly Japan, and for the Scandinavian countries. I'm mostly interested in services for medium-term durations -- say, two to six weeks. Sites offering unusual housing (e.g. converted barns, lighthouses, treehouses) would be interesting to me, as would heritage sites and retreat-like spaces such as temples and monasteries that offer accommodation for nonreligious people. I'm interested in both urban and rural destinations. [more inside]
It's been a couple years since this last question, so I figured it was worth a renewal. My two travel partners and I will be arriving in Kyoto this afternoon and I wanted to ping the hive mind for suggestions. [more inside]
Does anyone know of a documentary film that compares the Allied occupations (and "rehabilitation") of Germany and Japan after World War II? Bonus if it's about 50 minutes in length. [more inside]
I purchased these porcelain bowls from TJ Maxx yesterday to use as feeding dishes for my cats. There were only two bowls at the store. They had a "Blue Moon Japan" sticker affixed and are stamped with the same name on the bottom. I would love to buy more in the same or similar color/pattern. My Google-fu isn’t strong this morning. I’ve only found tea sets from the same manufacturer. I would be thrilled to find the manufacturer’s website if only to find out what the pattern names are called.
We're going to Japan! What should we do? What are some useful iPhone apps? How do we get Internet access? [more inside]
LongShotFilter: I'm looking for a Japanese comic/illustration I saw online about 10-12 years ago. It was about two packs of cigarettes in love. (...I think.) [more inside]
I'm wondering what the proper term for this jacket is. I am told it is Japanese. It is made of heavy cotton and is hand stitched. [more inside]
I'll be in Tokyo with my family in July, and I would love to check out a sumo wrestling match. I found that there will be a tournament happening in Nagoya while we are there. It looks like the Shinkansen train can make the trip in ~100min. Is this a feasible day trip for 3 ppl (2 adults + 1 6y/o)? Any insight appreciated
We're planning an October trip to Japan, and having never been to that part of the world, I find I have no idea what a good fare is. I'd like to purchase well in advance and I'm finding fares in the $1300-1500 range for our time period. Is that a good fare?
How do I build someone's credit while they are overseas and not a US citizen? I am getting married to someone who is Japanese (in about 5 months) and lives in Japan right now. Because I know we will one day want to buy a house, I want to start building her credit as soon as possible because I know that it is easier to get a loan with two people signing instead of one. We're flying in and out of Narita at the end of March - and that's pretty much all we have planned at the moment. [more inside]
I have a four letter twitter username. Several times a week, different Japanese twitter users will send me more than 100 mentions, usually gibberish or numbers. I think it's a sort of game or trolling, but I want to understand why. [more inside]
I am looking for some high quality Japanese Brush Pens since you can draw so many wonderful things with them- I know about the "Kuretake 50 Million Years" but I find it hard to find other really good Brush Pens in the 30-100$ range. Availability only in Japan is fine. [more inside]
Long story short: I have a friend here in Japan who runs a ramen shop. His lifelong dream is to move to America and open a ramen shop there, and my wife and I are hoping to help him do this a few years down the road (my wife would basically run the business end of things and perhaps own it on paper, and he'd be in charge of the kitchen end of things). Where can I find this brand of buckwheat tea? I tried Googling the phone number without any luck. All the text is in Japanese, I think, so I can't dig any deeper than that.
Looking for advice and tips before planning a holiday to Japan to view the cherry blossoms this spring. [more inside]
What are some good English-language resources to learn about Japanese mythology? Book recommendations are welcome, too. My interest is mostly to gain some background knowledge that would help me understand better Japanese novels or manga, in the way that knowing Greek or Norse mythology is helpful when reading Western literature.

I've searched previous instances of congee showing up in comments on the Green, but very few actual recipes. None of the recipes I've found online even agree on the rice-to-water ratio or cooking time. Recipes from any nation, savory or sweet and any serving tips or suggestions most welcome!
So, I have a sudden burning desire to learn as much as I can about Japanese politics pronto. Please hope me. [more inside]
I'm traveling to Japan for a week for InterBee - which also include two days on my own. I land at the airport...and then have to get to my hotel (different ones during the trip). My guess is that I will be doing loads of train travel. Loads of questions [more inside]
As an American that does not read Japanese nor has any Japanese bank accounts or credit cards, how can I order a set of these Pokémon hanafuda cards?
I was living in Japan for a while, and have some cash stuck in my Japanese post office bank account (Yuucho Ginkou) - not an exorbitant amount, but enough for me to care about - that I did not withdraw when traveling home to America since I was planning to return to Japan soon anyway. My plan to return fell through, and I will be staying in America longer than planned - I would like to reclaim said money, but am unsure as to how I can do so. [more inside]
I'm doing research on bowling and bowling pros, and I've had a hard time finding info on bowlers from Japan/JPBA (Japan Professional Bowling Association). Does anyone know any English sources that cover (or covered) the JPBA or any of their top bowlers? [more inside]
Someone is going to be sending me money - they live in Japan. What is the cheapest way to send the money? The amount is going to be somewhere between $1500-6000, probably closer to the 1500. I have an account with xetrade and they have worked well in the past for UK/US money transfers but I notice that Japanese residents cannot sign up on that site. Where can I get the best rate possible? I also have a forex account with my broker but 'hedging' is probably too complicated for this transfer unless someone here thinks differently. I will also be visiting this person in December so there is the possibility they could give me some cash and I could convert once I reach the US again, although I'm sure there are limits on the amounts of money I can take overseas.
What fun goodies can I put in a flat rate envelope headed for Japan? I'm sending my friend a care package and I want to cram it with as much happiness as possible. [more inside]

I have two fantastic work from home jobs that involve frequent international travel. Both of my employers are U.S. companies and I am a U.S. citizen. I want to continue working, but relocate my base to Asia for a year or two. I'd prefer to live in: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Japan or Bangkok, but am open to other options. I do not want to get a local job, but to keep my current gigs. So, the question is: how can I get permission to stay without a local job? I have plenty of money coming in, but I won't be able to rent an apartment on a tourist visa. What are my visa/immigration options? Any advice for the above listed destinations or other fine cities in Asia, would be much appreciated. I have more than a decade of long-term travel experience in Asia and speak Japanese and basic Vietnamese, FWIW.

Me an my girlfriend are planning to get married next year. Right now she is living in Japan. She mentioned to me that a K1 visa is what she will need to stay in the United States once we get married. Does anyone know of any caveats to this visa? Would it be best to hire a lawyer to help us make sure the process goes smoothly? Also, are there any other options for visas that she could potentially get? My idea is to propose to her when she visits me on a 3 month visitor's visa and then get married within that 3 months. Any relevant experiences are welcome. Thanks for you help.
Give me your recommendations for your favorite horror manga.
How many people during the Tohoku 3/11 earthquake actually died from the earthquake itself, and not the tsunami? Also subtract elderly heart attacks, people being fatally crushed under bookshelves/the like, and the collapse of rickety old traditional houses that would have been knocked out during a smaller quake too. I am going to be moving back home from Japan (Narita or Haneda) to Ohio (Cleveland-Hopkins) in about 3 weeks to a month. I have not purchased a plane ticket yet, and have no clue where to start. I am considering doing a bit of traveling in between, but don't have too much money to spend so I would like to iron out the details of my return plans first. Help me, Metafilter! [more inside]
I just got news that I got an internship at an architectural office (altough I just graduated as a a graphic designer) in Tokyo, which is crazy exciting. However, they can't offer any compensation (small studio) so unless I find another job next to this, I need some really cheap solutions. I just sent an email to the studio, asking them for assistance, but figured meta could help. My plan is to stay for 2-3 months. I saved up some money from side jobs, and don't mind spending it on this experience, but the less it makes a dent the better. My only idea so far was to work as some kind of au pair (I speak English, German, Dutch and Croatian fluently, I'm good with kids, but I am a guy, which I guess is not too popular a gender for babysitting), in exchange for a room. Any ideas? Also, some place where I could look for a small job on the side (preferably something where I could use my design skills, but don't mind a day job)? Also, how much can I expect to spend monthly if I'm, technically, still on a student budget? Thank a lot!
I'm travelling to Japan for the first time. I'll be there for about a week, and want to buy some interesting, unique, useful items. What can I buy in Japan that I can't get anywhere else, or that is better than what I can get elsewhere? I'm a utilitarian minimalist who doesn't like owning stuff for the sake of stuff. I like things that are useful, well-designed, beautiful and high-quality. I also like small things. What should I buy in Japan, and what kind of stores should I be looking for? [more inside]

Japan and the Japanese public are often portrayed as being admirers of the culture of the United States. But within living memory the two countries were involved in a brutal war, which culminated in conventional and nuclear bombings targeting Japan's citizenry and devastating their country. In Japan's case, how did a societal contempt sufficient to wage and sustain total war turn, in such a short time, into a societal affinity sufficient for some to embrace many parts of the culture of the nation that had dealt them destruction on such a massive scale?
