Good Winter Clothes for Toddlers

Please recommend good winter clothing for 1-year-olds, especially super warm coats. We're talking months and months of ice and snow here. It's our first midwest winter and we'd love recommendations on coats and clothes to get our 1-year-old boys (well, they turn 1 in a couple of weeks). Online or stores in the Aurora, IL area. Thanks in advance!

What do wear under 3/4-length sleeves?

What do you wear under a 3/4-length sleeve jacket? I just bought a cute jacket from an online vendor. It's nylon-coated and clearly outerwear. When it arrived, I realized that it has 3/4-length sleeves, which in theory is fine; I like that length in sweaters and shirts but in outerwear, I'm finding it a bit problematic if I'm wearing long sleeves as a shirt or jacket. Do you usually just let your long under-sleeves extend out past the cuff of the jacket? The jacket is pale green so not everything I wear under it will be color coordinated with it and I sort of think that long sleeves peaking out of a shorter sleeved jacket looks odd. But then the alternatives are push up the sleeves to the shirt/sweater and keep my arms bare below the cuffs of the jacket or.....wear another jacket. I take the jacket off when indoors. Please believe me when I say that I am not losing sleep over this and I do realize that my concerns over sleeve coordination are pretty minor issues in the grand scheme of things.

Windproof and waterproof clothing?

Point me towards a jacket and pants that are waterproof and windproof. I've started cycling to work and the store. I'd like to get a jacket and a pair of pants that are waterproof and windproof.

I've read that it helps to get jackets with adjustable zippers for the chest or armpits to let in air when you want to cool down. That might be nice.

I'd also like the jacket's cuffs to be tight--either adjustable or elastic. The pants should also be tight around my ankles.

I do not want some super-fancy elite awesomeness; practical and a good price are key. Ideally, I'd like to get both for under $100, or as close as I can, but if it's simply impossible to get quality at that price, then of course I'll go higher.

They should also be light, as warmth would be obtained through additional layers underneath.

Urban Rugged Clothes like Triple 5 Soul and G-Star Raw. For chicas, not guys.

Women's urban clothing. I'd like to find more brands of clothing like G-Star Raw and Triple 5 Soul. I particularly like this jacket and this shirt and this blazer. What are other retailers or brands that sell kinda tough, kinda sexy, kinda rugged apparel, specifically for women? I know of Karmaloop, Diesel and a few other online places, but so much of it is cutesy or too tiny. This is for a women's size large, about a 12-14 if possible. Men's clothing just doesn't really fit me (or someone else for whom this kind of clothing would be perfect). Guy's shirts are often too broad and the arms are too long, my hips are too wide. Think "urban rugged" rather than "full-out military" and definitely not too cutesy like this.

So: any suggestions? Skater/snowboard attire that isn't too tricked out? Punk clothing that's toned down a bit?

Motorcycle commuting? No sweat.

No sweat motorcycle commuting? I'm enjoying my new era of being a motorcycle commuter, but the weather is about to turn armpit hot here in the Southeastern US and I'm trying to find a way to arrive at work without looking like a sweaty beast. Are mesh motorcycle jackets a realistic alternative to heavier weight jackets? Any recommendations on good models? Any other advice?

Relevant info (maybe): 5 mile commute, urban traffic, max speed ~40mph, I'm a slightly taller than average fellow.

What kind of jacket does Adam have?

I just came back from my mom's house, where I watched several episodes of Mythbusters (I live in a cave and dont have cable so when I can I watch it) but any way our favorite mefi Adam Savage, had this really great jacket on and I would love to know more about it. Of course... It was green nylon(?) with many cool pockets and what looked like padding along the back. Just curious...

and if Adam sees this, I would have put a heavier weight on the actuator to see what happened to the bridge.

Fake leather jacket? In NYC?

FashionFilter: Where can I buy an imitation leather men's jacket that doesn't look stupid? Do such things exist? I like leather a lot from the appearance standpoint, but while I eat meat, I don't see the consumption of leather or fur as particularly wholesome. Whenever I've tried Googling such things, the only jackets I ever find are bomber jackets, which are not my style -- I'd prefer something cleaner and more modern. Internet sites are fine, but serious bonus points for actual stores in New York City. And how much can I reasonably expect to pay for such a thing?

Darken the bright

Fashionmasters: I bought a snowboard jacket for this winter that I like a lot, but after a few months, I'm feeling it's perhaps a bit too loud. It has black sleeves, and the rest is a bright yellow color. What can I do (short of spray painting the thing) to deemphasize this brightness?

Problems with a new leather jacket

My new leather jacket is wearing very strangely. [+] The owner of the store I bought it from seemed strangely eager to sell me it, especially since he was giving me what was supposedly a $700 jacket for $150. It's very warm and I like it a lot, however I haven't had it more than a month and there's already scratches on the leather. It seems like the material tore a bit, revealing the underside to be a weird blue-green color. Shoe polish covers it up just fine, but I'm wondering what the hell is going on since I've never seen anyone else's jacket do this. Am I treating it badly? Did I get ripped off? What's going on?

Should I keep my dust jackets?

Should I throw away the dust jackets from my hardcover books? [MI] I have a couple hundred books, half of them in boxes, half of them stuffed on shelves. The hardcover books look much nicer without the dust jackets, but right now, they're all covered up by paperbacks and other stuff, so I'm not worried about how they look.

In the event that I got more shelving so that they were arranged in a decent manner, I'd like to take off the dust jackets. But, like my grandparents, I find it hard to convince myself to throw these away. What's the point of keeping them? Do they really serve any purpose? I've always kept them just because they come that way.

Does anyone make a breathable windbreaker?

Does anyone make a breathable windbreaker? (more inside) I’m looking for something to wear while cycling that will keep me warm down to 25-F, but won’t trap moisture. I wear a wickable shirt underneath a fleece jacket underneath a windbreaker (Pearl Trifecta). But I get totally soaked with sweat within about 30 minutes, even in the coldest temps. Vented windbreakers don’t seem to work for me. Is there a fabric that stops the wind but breathes?

Insulated Jackets

Outdoor gear question: I'm trying to choose between a Mountain Hardwear Chugach jacket and a Moonstone Cirrus jacket, or a similar synthetic-insulated jacket. Anyone have experiences or recommendations to help me make my choice? [a little bit more inside] I've more or less narrowed my choices to those two, based on fit, features, and cost (they're quite similar on paper, but I'd really like to know about real-life experiences). If you know of others I should check out, that would be cool also. Thanks!
