Someone died and willed me a helpdesk... Ok, not really inherited, but in my current job I am now responsible for helping our helpdesk grow and run more smoothly. It's work that I enjoy. What I am missing, however, is an online forum or mailing list that allows me to communicate with other helpdesk managers and planners. I have looked around in various places, but have come up dry. Does anyone know of any resources along these lines?

As the IT guy in a high school (180 students), I'm thinking of taking on one or two "TAs" to work with the computers. For the IT people out there, what would you have students do (or would you allow it)? From the students' perspective, I'm also looking for ideas & projects they might find interesting and beneficial towards a future in IT.

I want to get back to school and get a degree to find a better job but I am already 30. Is it too old to try for a degree?
my interests are IT and finance, though IT is much more easier for me. Does anyone know the IT market in British Columbia? I don't want to be IT monkey forever and I would like to move up to some manger role in the future.
Also, how do employers see hiring a mid 30s with a degree compared to all the mid 20s that are coming out of school these days?
I am not sure how or what path I should take but I just know I need more education to get a better paying job.

I'm stuck in a contracting loop and I need career advice :(
I'm about to finish up a 9 month contract at a major pharmaceutical. I was on contract for 6-months and got extended the final 3. Before that I was out of work for a few months after being laid off from my previous job. That involved supporting remote synchronization software as well as SQL work. I graduated with a major in Information Studies and I've worked help desk positions in the past.

How do great I.T. Managers run their departments? I am looking for a playbook on how to run a steamlined I.T. department for an organization of 500-1000 people. McDonalds has a handbook on running a restaurant from soup-to-nuts. I want the same for an I.T. Department. I have searched the Web and Amazon and cannot practical, tactical information on managing an I.T. department. I can easily find literature on high-level concepts like ITIL, SOA, and 'Runnng I.T. Like a Business', but nothing practical like 'How to run a helpdesk', 'How To Keep Track of Software Licenses' or even 'What does an I.T. Manager really do?'. What are the things that your I.T. department does that make them great? How do I get a blackbelt in I.T. Management?

Wheres the best place to learn things like how to migrate a messy pile of microsoft access databases to sql? Normally when learning new I use books, online sources and forums, and good old fashioned trial and error, but its a slow process for some of us. As its easier learning from someone with experience in the field. are there any sites that go some way to addressing this teacher / student system online, aside from the usual forum formats, i was thinking of some sort of bartering system, but for knowledge not pigs?
