This merry-go-round sure is fun but I'd like to get off now.

Well, I have a few really awesome problems that I would completely recommend to anyone. I would suggest you try any of, or especially the full combination of, the following:
  • Chronic illness
  • No social network
  • Mental illness
  • Geographic dislocation
  • My question: how do I build a decent life? Or start in that direction, in a stable way that won't fall apart in a light breeze. Again. [more inside]

    Study/writing retreats in Europe

I am looking for places anywhere in Europe where I can spend 1-8 weeks at a time to work long, consecutive, undisturbed and isolated days writing my thesis. They should be accessible by public transport and within reasonable reach from an international airport. Ideally the places would be in idyllic nature settings, with the possibility of long, picturesque walks, and most importantly contain a bright, clean study space within the apartment/flat/house/room or an inviting, quiet and small library in the near vicinity. I am on a student budget so I'm thinking no more than €300/pw. I am thinking there must be somewhere that fits the bill in 'overlooked' countries like Slovenia, Hungary, or Portugal where my money would go further than obvious choices like Switzerland or Norway. Any suggestions for this odd, particular request? Just to clarify, I am looking for specific places rather than countries/regions.

I want to move. I don't know if I can. How do I deal?

I’m a tenured academic, and my once-pretty-great job is now… pretty not-great. But lots of factors mean that even in the best case, I’ll be here for a while, maybe a long while. How do I find a new position? How do I deal emotionally with the possibility that I won't, at least not soon? [more inside]

Wherever you go, there you are

I spend a lot of time alone, and I'm very good at keeping myself entertained. I need a lot of alone time in order to thrive. Yet, sometimes I feel bored/tired with myself, and I'm not sure how to snap out of that. What helps restore you when you're tired of yourself? Please don't make any suggestions that depend on social activities or travel--I love both, but I can't access those on command. [more inside]

How can I isolate against tram rumble?

I live about 50m from a busy tram intersection. Ear plugs and white noise are no match for the low-frequency rumble. I am thinking about getting asymmetric double glazed windows, but I would like to make sure the windows are the main source of the problem, and not the window frames or any vibrations travelling through the building. Any advice on how I can make sure what the main source of noise is? [more inside]

Adults who love life and have no kids: what is your lifestyle?

I'm not too excited about the "get married and have kids" or the "devote yourself completely to your job" approaches, yet these seem (to me at least) to be the two most common lifestyles that happy people report. Currently I take the "play video games and watch TV" approach, which isn't really happy-inducing for me anymore. For the rest of you out there who would consider yourselves happy, what lifestyle sustains you? What do your days look like? What do you do to keep things interesting for yourself? Thanks for your thoughts. [more inside]

How to successfully decrease social isolation as an unsocial person?

My partner and I aren't naturally social people, but we're worried about the negative health and wellbeing outcomes associated with objective social isolation (particularly as described in this NHS story). If you're a person who prefers a solitary lifestyle, and you've deliberately increased your level of social contact for similar reasons, how did you go about this, and did it work out for you? How can we make our city apartment more of a social hub?

My wife and I are in our late thirties with a young child of 2, living in a big European city. Though we still have social lives outside and host a few dinners a month, we're finding ourselves increasingly isolated at home, and it's kinda depressing. I'm looking for real life examples like The Shining.

And by Shining type cases, let me say that English ghosts and psychic kids are of course a bonus but in no way necessary. What I'm getting as is I'm trying to do some research on cases of murder or near murder brought on by isolation. Needed: One Pair Of Big Girl Pants ASAP

I am one of those adults who had to emotionally take care of myself throughout my life due to mediocre parenting. Mom and Dad weren't hugely abusive, but they didn't seem to give a fuck about my brother and I. I'm coming out of a month where I went off my meds and I think I had a hypomanic episode followed by a giant crash. While I am now back on my meds and working with my therapist and pdoc, I am craving someone in my life who would take care of me emotionally. Someone who would understand where I was coming from and why I feel the way I do. The thing is, I do live in reality and know that's not possible for the immediate foreseeable future, if ever. What can I do to self-soothe and give myself that pampered feeling? How do I find someone who gets me? [more inside]

What do I do in Bangkok when I can't really DO anything?

I am in Bangkok for another week and a half. I've been here 18 days already and have been confined to my hotel recovering from surgery.
