My husband and I will be traveling with two friends of ours to Big Island of Hawai'i the first week of October. We went around the same time with the same couple in 2012 and spent most of our time on the Kona side. Now we're planning to spend most of our time on the Hilo side, and I'm looking for all the advice/tips/recommendations you have to offer! Specific questions inside. [more inside]

I'm looking for academic-level writing on the ways that cities that are built on islands or peninsulas, or in geographically isolated areas, develop and behave differently from cities that are more easily and fully connected to other cities. This would be about the mindset and attitudes and not about urban planning or infrastructure. I'm thinking these may be anthropological or sociological studies. They may even just be a thought pieces or essays. I could swear I saw one that talked about Manhattan and Charleston, but I can't find it.

The wife and I would like a relaxing, ~4 day spring break getaway the weekend of March 14. Difficulties: we'd prefer no more than ~4 hours driving or ~6 hours in a plane. Would prefer to avoid spring break crowds. We live in Pittsburgh. I'd like somewhere warmer than Pittsburgh. [more inside]

A friend of mine is trying to identify a children's book she read once. The plot involves an island floating in two children's backyard. The children (girl and boy) naturally explore the island, and it floats away with them on it. They come across other islands in the sky, some of which are inhabited. Later they have an argument and dig a ditch across the middle of the island. Book was probably mid to late 20th century, probably English (as in England). It is not Gulliver's Travels
or Floating Island
by Anne Parrish. I have failed, can you help?

Heading up to Shelter Island NY for a weekend soon from North Jersey. Leaving 6am on a Friday. I will be with my wife and toddler. Any suggestions for stops/attractions/restaurants along the way? I suspect my toddler will need a break after 2 hours on a 4+ hour drive. Also any comments on traffic and directions would be helpful! thanks!

Children's novel: Protagonist is the son of deceased missionaries, retaining only a comforter and a photograph. He lives with an aunt and uncle, and the plot concerns his reintegration into non-missionary society. Setting is an island in New England, and there are scenes of driving on the ice in the winter to get to the mainland. [more inside]

What is this
? I've had it hanging on my wall for a year or two. It was found on the sand below the water line at the Fire Island National Seashore/Wilderness. It's lightweight and friable, like a sea creature. It's 24 cm (9.4 inches) long by 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide. 24 cm is 1.7 monkey skulls, if that helps.

A good friend of mine is getting married. Yay! He's also moving to St. Kitts from New Mexico, and will be living near the water for the first time in his life. Double-yay! I'd like to get him and his wife a wedding gift that will be useful for his new island life, but I've only ever visited the coast. What's the perfect couples water... thing... that will get them introduced to the joys of the ocean in an entertaining and exciting way? I'd buy them a pair of jetskis but my budget is probably only about $100 or so...

We're headed to the Big Island for a week. We've gotten a package at the Hilton Waikoloa Resort so will be staying there for 4 nights. Now, we know we'll get sick of the hotel scene by night 3 or night 4 (but have already paid for it and are getting a good deal), SO can anyone recommend a nice cottage/B+B/lodge where we can go to wind down our vacation, somewhere relatively luxurious (no more than $400/nt please) and not packed with tons of people?
FWIW, I looked on VRBO and there are sooo many choices my head spun. A lodge would be fine and if you happen to know of any vacation rentals that would be good too.
I found this
previously and have contacted the 2 places mentioned...they're taken!
Anyone been to or know of the type of place I've described? Many thanks in advance!
