I (36-year-old female) am traveling from Boston to Hawaii in early March for 10 days. Planning on 4 days and 4 nights on my own on the Big Island, sandwiched between three days on Oahu and three on Kauai where I will have company. For logistical reasons, I’m in some hurry to book my flights to/from TBI, and so am trying to nail down my itinerary. I’m also inflexible on days of the week on TBI. I’m thinking of one of these two itineraries: [more inside]
Our kid is turning one-year-old and we're throwing a big party in a couple of weeks at my parent's house in Long Island. We'd like to hire a photographer to document the day and have been looking around, but we're mainly just finding wedding photographers. We'd like to hire a professional (or, at least, expert) photographer -- we don't want to just give a camera to one of the guests. Are there professional photographers who aren't on the wedding circuit who'd consider doing this sort of thing? Would art or MFA students be interested in doing this sort of work (and, if so, how would we find them)? Are there other non-wedding routes that we haven't thought about but should be exploring?
Mr Shibori and I are planning a trip during the second half of September. We want sun, sea, and food...relaxation but not isolation. Our first choice is Santorini but I am recovering from a leg injury and there seem to be a lot of steps in Santorini. [more inside]

Advice on things to do, places to visit, how to get around, and anything else appreciated!! This is on a student budget, btw. Bonus question: What's the best way to learn traveller's Spanish in the next few weeks? I am an advanced French speaker, if that makes a difference... [more inside]
I'm trying to find a film that was shown to me when I was in first grade in 1976. It was a stop-motion animation film that was about a situation where all the men live on one island and all the women live on another island. They attempt to come together, but there is the difficulty of getting from one island to the other to contend with. The look of the film was like Gumby - it may have been claymation, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
There's a multi-media project encompassing several games and an animated film. I have no idea what it was called now. Please help! And also recommend similar things! [more inside]
If I were marooned on a stereotypical deserted island (like Benjamin Gunn or Gilligan or in Lord of the Flies), would I be able to make soap and, if so, how? Assume I have access to standard deserted island stuff including coconuts, wild boars, fish, fresh and salt water, sand, palm trees, fire, sturdy vines, &c, and that I am handy enough to make spears and stone axes. Note that I am looking specifically for answers on how I would make soap and NOT for alternative methods of cleaning (I assume I could just scour stuff with the sand but I want soap). [more inside]
This April we're going to Reunion Island (South Indian Ocean, SW of Mauritius). The good thing is that it's well off the beaten path for US tourists. The bad part is that it's well off the beaten path for US tourists, so it's somewhat more difficult to research than most destinations. I'm looking for recommendations and advice. [more inside]
I my memory, there was the basic PacMan computer game (not in arcades but on the PC at home) which at some point had a second level - same game idea but the design on the screen was a sunny, sandy island in the middle of the ocean, with treasure chests, palm trees, and maybe even pirates. I remember this fondly and (too) often and wish I could find it again. Does anybody know where to purchase this game or perhaps find it online? Details within. [more inside]
(Posting on behalf of a friend): I was convicted of a DUI in March 2014, and am trying to pick up the pieces. I need to pay for an SR-22 which is insurance on my license. If I do not pay for this insurance my license will lapse. The policy is less expensive if I also insure a vehicle but I will not need a car in the coming months and cannot afford the payments. I need help figuring out if it would be smarter to not pay for any insurance (letting my license lapse), to sell the car and use the profits to pay the SR-22, or to just keep the car (though I really do not want to). I'm looking for academic-level writing on the ways that cities that are built on islands or peninsulas, or in geographically isolated areas, develop and behave differently from cities that are more easily and fully connected to other cities. This would be about the mindset and attitudes and not about urban planning or infrastructure. I'm thinking these may be anthropological or sociological studies. They may even just be a thought pieces or essays. I could swear I saw one that talked about Manhattan and Charleston, but I can't find it.
The wife and I would like a relaxing, ~4 day spring break getaway the weekend of March 14. Difficulties: we'd prefer no more than ~4 hours driving or ~6 hours in a plane. Would prefer to avoid spring break crowds. We live in Pittsburgh. I'd like somewhere warmer than Pittsburgh. [more inside]

A friend of mine is trying to identify a children's book she read once. The plot involves an island floating in two children's backyard. The children (girl and boy) naturally explore the island, and it floats away with them on it. They come across other islands in the sky, some of which are inhabited. Later they have an argument and dig a ditch across the middle of the island. Book was probably mid to late 20th century, probably English (as in England). It is not Gulliver's Travels or Floating Island by Anne Parrish. I have failed, can you help?
