Good news! Going through some old paperwork I just found a check for $2,600 that I'd never cashed from 2003. Bad news! It was a rollover distribution from a 401K at Fidelity, made out to E-trade. Fidelity says they did file a 1099 in the year they cut the check. Am I screwed for the back taxes, plus penalties? [more inside]

I just received an email from PayPal notifying me that my account information has been requested by the IRS. I rarely use the account--it has very little activity other than the occasional small purchase (ebay, etc) and small ebay sale. It doesn't seem like a scam email, but I have no idea why my info would be requested? Should I get a lawyer involved or is this just a large-scale email I should ignore? Here is the email with my name removed (however, the case does refer to John Doe): [more inside]

IRS document request -- my boss has asked me to somehow make a request to the IRS for a 1971 document that our company filed. It was a request for 501(c)(4) status, which was granted. But the original application to the IRS is lost, and we need it. So how do I request an old document? Can I do it on the Web? Do I contact the IRS or maybe do a Freedom of Info Act request?

My mortgage company called me and told me that my ex-husband requested tax info regarding a mortgage on my house from 2002. Seems that my ex-husband is finally getting around to filing his tax returns for 2002-2005 and wants to use the mortgage interest and real estate taxes that I paid on his return. We separated in 2001 and divorced finally in 2003. If I call the IRS, do you think this would jeopardize me in any way? [more inside]

How do I approach the IRS? They got me - dead to rights - I screwed up a few years back, when rolling over my 401K into a IRA (then into a downpayment for my house). I *thought* my credit union paid taxes on that money when I rolled it over. I made a mistake. Now, that I'm "caught up", and ready to pony up the delinquent taxes, what the best way to ask the IRS to waive the penalties? Say "Pretty, please?" Everyone says one *can* negotiate with the IRS. So how, would one go about doing so? What might one do to make a positive outcome more likely?

Is there a law requiring you to pay Income Tax? I saw this video over at youtube, from The FreedomtoFacisim.com website. They say that Income tax is illegal and there are no laws. They even mention that the 16th admendment isn't valid via the supreme court. Ok, are these guys wackos? IRS has guns, so they make the rules, thats all I know.

I'm trying to make my new web project legal in California. After reading through the Nolo press book(s), we thought that perhaps the LLC was the best corporate structure (we are going to issue stock and give the primary developer a portion in lieu of payment). While the Federal government taxes LLCs like sole proprietorships - you aren't taxed unless you make profit, and I don't see our profit outpacing our costs for a year - the State of California charges an LLC "tax" (really a fee) of $800, due almost immediately after your incorporation paperwork goes through, so...
