My partner and I need to pay off some debt, and unfortunately we need to dip into our retirement funds. Our tax accountant is on vacation and we can't find the answer to our question. We have two sources–either sell some stock or cash out a couple of short-term IRA CDs. Which is the lesser of two evils? [more inside]

Tax laws allow you to withdraw money penalty-free from your IRA up to $10,000 if you use it towards a first-time home purchase. We just got the check -- my question is, how do we prove later on that we did use the money for the house?

TaxFilter: Last year I opened an IRA (for 2003), and this year I want to do the same and put away the maximum contribution. Can I just transfer the money into the old account? Or do I need to open a new one?
