I currently use approximately four+ computers with all major OS'es (Mac, Windows, Linux-Ubuntu) between work and home. Plus an Ipod Classic for portable music listening. Problem is keeping my music library up to date on all machines, or synced together. If I create a playlist, or change ratings, genre, etc. the results also aren't propagated to the other machines. On Windows and Mac I've been using Itunes but I'm not necessarily tied to it, but it does work on 2 of the 3 OS'es.
There are some previous similar questions, but all look several years old.

I lost my iTunes installation in a hard drive crash. I have a backup from many months ago. I have an iPad and iPhone that have never been synced to iTunes because I got them since the hard drive failure. I'd like to re-install iTunes from the backup and sync my iPad and iPhone to the re-installed iTunes without losing any data or re-installing apps. How would I do that? [more inside]

My daughter put a password on her iPod and promptly forgot it, which would be fine if iTunes didn't stop responding every single time we try to sync it. I really don't want to lose everything that is on there, especially her pictures and purchases. Help me be a hero to my daughter and tell me how to fix it.

I have 300gb of music, a house, several Mac laptops, a Mac G5, a router, two iphones, an ipad, and several external HDs where the music is stored. I would like to be able to play music anywhere in my house, control it wirelessly without the laptops and update libraries as well as all my devices with whatever I like anywhere in the house, without having to drag out the external USB HD to plug into various laptops like I do now. I'm willing to buy equipment to let this happen. Bonus if it lets me move movies onto a USB stick to plug into my nifty new tv. Details under the fold. [more inside]

A few days ago syncing my iPod Touch with iTunes deleted all but its original apps (My fault for not noticing that the list of apps in iTunes had, for some reason, reverted to the factory defaults). While slowly restoring my purchased apps via the App Store App>Updates>Purchased, I noticed that ad-supported Instapaper was no longer listed. Googling 'Instapaper Free' told me that the ad-supported version was removed from iTunes and support discontinued sometime in April of this year. This has led me to several questions: [more inside]

What's the best technology for a little kid listening to music? My five-year-old loves music. We only have song on iTunes and iPods. He can't read the song titles, and it's too easy for him to mess things up. I'm wishing for a stack of records ("like we had when I was a kid") that he could manage himself. Any advice on creating a self-operable music listening system for kids in this age of digital music? Thanks!

What's a decent iPhone app for downloading/listening to podcasts? I'm trying to avoid syncing it to iTunes every time I want to get new podcasts, so I'd like to use this app to subscribe to one and let me know when new episodes are available (that's the important part), listen to them, and delete them. Didn't find much of anything in the AskMeFi archives except a reference to Podcaster, but does anyone have any personal recommendations? Free or not-free. Thanks!

iTunes broke my calendar. I can no longer sync Outlook to my iPod Touch because "sync server failed to sync." I can't find an answer to this on iTunes help although I do see that others have had this problem. Any suggestions? I've always done this over a USB cable. Nothing has changed except the calendar won't sync anymore. My iTunes software is up to date. I think Notes and Contacts are syncing -- though I just realized I haven't really tested that. I don't sync music in this operation, I do that from a different machine with different settings.

I have two kids. Each has an ipod touch. Planning on adding two more to the household (mom and dad). Problem: I created an itunes store ID for each kid. Looking backward, wouldn't it have been smarter to create ONE Apple ID for the family, so I can see what is being purchased? I had a recent breach in my credit card and had several unauthorized purchases from Itunes...having one account might have led me to see this fraud a little sooner. (apart from checking my credit card statement daily)
What do you multi-iphone-Touch families do? one account?
If the devices all get registered to one account, can one transfer a paid app from one device to another?
Will apps already purchased be lost if I consolidate the devices under a different username?
Any family Apple device strategies appreciated.

I have a 4th Gen click wheel iPod. It still plays and charges. Today, I got the "restore" error message when hooking it up to my iMac/iTunes. I tried restoring it but it then gave me the msg "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1433)" and directed me to here. I tried the usual stuff recommended including: unplugging and replugging; trying new cord; holding menu and center button down for reboot; trying on other macs -- and still get the same msg. Although the technology is old, the iPod itself has hardly been used. Any suggestions? (Besides buying a new one.)
Thanks for your input.

Can someone please tell me how to find the size of my iPhoto and iTunes files? I go into Library, find iPhoto and iTunes and then find bunch of subfiles, divided by date; but they don't seem to include all the pictures and songs. It doesn't make sense and Apple documentation doesn't clarify the matter.

Not just one track is different--none of the tracks overlap. Why is this happening? [more inside]
