I'm still using a Samsung flip phone from the earlier part of this century. It works fine; I'm not a big cell phone user, but it calls and texts, is reasonably cheap, and I'm quite happy with it. For some upcoming graduate work, though, I need a device that is capable of runnings apps (specifically drug information, like Epocrates) and am weighing my different options. More below the fold. I'd like to find a use for my iPod touch that will, in some way, enrich my life more than just playing endless games of Drop7. Some ideas I've had: reading great literature in ebook form; memory training
; becoming more virtuous
; studying a foreign language. What other things can I do?

What's a decent iPhone app for downloading/listening to podcasts? I'm trying to avoid syncing it to iTunes every time I want to get new podcasts, so I'd like to use this app to subscribe to one and let me know when new episodes are available (that's the important part), listen to them, and delete them. Didn't find much of anything in the AskMeFi archives except a reference to Podcaster, but does anyone have any personal recommendations? Free or not-free. Thanks!

Unexpected Holiday Gift: Someone got me a Zune HD! Problem. I already own an ipod Nano and know next to nothing about Zune. What can the Zune do that my nano can't? How do you use yours? What does the Zune do well? Any tips or trips or strange things/ 3rd party applications I can use?

Cost aside, should I swap an iPod Touch + NYTimes app with a Kindle + NYTimes subscription? My iPod Touch is too distracting; a Kindle would be less so. On the other hand, I love the free NYT app. [more inside]

I'm interested in developing iPhone/iPod Touch applications, however my understanding is the SDK only works in OSX. I have a XP desktop and a Vista notebook with an AMD Athlon and Turion (both dual core) respectively, both pretty good machines. Is there any way to avoid spending serious cash buying a Mac just to get into iPhone development?
