Help with IPAQ

I have an HP iPAQ 2750. Around the same time it was manufactured, lots of aftermarket hardware and software came out with promises to enhance the device. One of those applications was a GPRS/GSM plug in modem (via the CF Card slot) and software from a company called Enfora. The modem was bundled with software from a company called BVRP. There was other software without a modem which also installed phone tools on the PDA from another company called WebToGo. HP sells the modem from Enfora which it claims is compatible with the iPAQ. But after many tries to install it, it seems ActiveSync 4.0 (which is what the iPAQ came with) was preventing it. I upgraded to ActiveSync 4.5 but still no luck with the Enfora/BVRP software.

I assumed the modem to be generic enough to work with any phone tools software, so I found different phone tools from WebToGo. Their phone tools did load onto the iPAQ. But after lots of calls to TMobile and more onliine chats with HP, I can't get the modem to see the TMobile network - this even after getting TMobile's cell to network number (*99#) and its modem string and web address.

I also thought there might be some issues with Windows Mobile 2003. I tried to upgrade to Windows Mobile 5, but the connection kept dropping. After going through that a few times, I decided the upgrade was more trouble than it's worth. Besides, all of the hardware and software says they work with Pocket PC 2002 and Windows Mobile 2003 anyway and the latter is what the iPAQ came with. So I decided that probably wasn't the problem.

I know I could just buy a smartphone, but I really like the iPAQ. But I don't want to keep carrying an iPAQ and a cell phone around - cluttered. If there are hackers who can break open an iPhone, it seems there should be somebody who can make this work? It seems like I'm almost there. Does anybody have any advice?

Ipaq troubles...

Help! I am a dolt. Why won't my smart-phone (Ipaq HW6915) sync with Windows Mobile Device Center? I haven't synced this device on this computer before and when I put it in the cradle, I hear the thuh-thump sound of the external device being recognized, but Windows Mobile Device Center doesn't see it there. Even under MY COMPUTER I can't see it listed. What's happening?

I'm using VISTA, btw.

I really appreciate it guys - probably something insanely obvious that I've overlooked and I've so far wasted an hour before it occurred to me that someone out there may know something...

What tools should I add to my iPaq?

What applications (freeware preferred) to people usually load up on their Windows Mobile (5.0) devices?
After many years getting by with a regular cell phone, my company recently switched me to an iPaq (6955). While I dislike the form factor a bit, I like the option of extending functionality with new programs. I just added Google Maps for Mobile, One Note mobile and will soon add MyLifeOrganized mobile (the non-freeware task mgmt tool I use).
Any other recommendations?

IPAQ phone: Do I pay for GPS/wifi?

Am I charged if I leave on the wifi and whenever I use the GPS? I'd hate to find some gi-normous phone bill just because I play with the GPS when I'm wait for the metro... Happily, a well-connected friend just gave me an old IPAQ 6915 since it requires a Vodafone contract and he doesn’t have one. His company was upgrading and tossing out these puppies and so I inherited this like-new phone. Cool. It has GPS (I’ve never signed up for a subscription, this phone has a little tomtom card) and it works with my SIM, but I’m not sure if I’m paying for it. Also, I can connect to wifi networks to send/receive email – but I’m also wary of this for fear of hidden fines. Are my concerns legitimate? I’ve called customer service at Vodafone and they were unhelpful and unknowledgeable, so maybe you guys know.

Also, if anyone has some tips or cool uses for this thing, let me know…

Thanks!

Please help my ipaq talk to my PC

Can someone point me towards a version of ActiveSync that doesn't require XP service pack 2? For several reasons, we took the decision not to upgrade to XP service pack 2. It interfered with the network settings too much.

I'm trying to install ActiveSync for my Ipaq 1950 (which runs windows mobile 5), to exchange files only - not calendar or email - between my ipaq and pc. But the two versions of ActiveSync available from the microsoft website don't work.

ActiveSync 4.5 wont install. The error message says I'm lacking a DLL, but wont tell me which one so I can't fix the problem.

ActiveSync 4.1 (which is also the version that came on the setup disk with my ipaq) refuses to install because I am not running the "latest service packs".

Is there an older version of ActiveSync or equivalent software somewhere on the web that will let my ipaq talk to my pc without having to ruin our home network in the process?

Suddenly my iPaq PDA won't sync with my PC - it apparently can't connect at all. Worse yet, when I try to connect it, my PC spontaneously restarts within the next 30 seconds, without fail. What's going on? I'm running an HP iPaq 1950 with Windows Mobile 5. I haven't changed anything since I last tried to sync that I can recall - it's been since February or so. In an attempt to get Activesync to see the PDA I updated from version 4.1 to 4.5, and that's when the restarting problems began. I'm at a total loss for how to fix this, so any help is greatly appreciated, and I'm more than glad to provide whatever stats/specs/whatever might be helpful.

Can I get a HP iPaq 6945 Unlocked with Verizon?

Can I get a HP iPaq 6945 Unlocked with Verizon? My old iPaq 4150 just died and I've been wanting to get a PDA phone forever. I don't particularly like the selection that Verizon supports, so I was looking at HP's site and I saw that they have an unlocked version of the 6945. Is it possible to get it to work with Verizon, I did some searching but I wasn't finding anything talking about it. I don't mind doing some light hacking/modifying, but I also want to make sure I can get it to work if I spend the money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

iPaq hates WEP WiFi

Ok, I have an HP 4155 iPaq and a WEP-enabled Netgear WGR614v6, but they don't connect. Any other computer can connect to the WiFi, and the PDA can connect to unprotected signals. When I attempt to connect, the iPaq asks for the passcode. This is my first problem: Do I use the generated phrase, or the base keycode? I'm not sure because while this box has no other options, in the network settings dialog there is a "key index" setting.

Anyway, I have tried both, so I don't think that's my problem.

Once I enter the passcode, the PDA attempts to connect, but just "times out" for lack of a better phrase. Am I just missing something here, or is this another feature HP forogt to implement correctly?

I believe I have installed all of the WiFi updates for the iPaq, and the reason the siginal isn't WPA is because the iPaq only supports WEP (I think). Please no network security tips on WPA vs WEP. No solution will be too hard - I'm the resident guru :)

And that bouncing Santa gif is pretty cool.

Palm or Windows Mobile?

I am trying to decide between the iPaq rx1955 and the Palm TX. Can anyone offer any insight? I have looked at both, the price point is similar, the features are similar, etc. There's the obvious difference of Palm OS and Window Mobile, but which one do you think is best?

I plan on using the unit for scheduling and WiFi internet/email. I could care less about watching videos, etc.

Durability is also VERY IMPORTANT! I am extremely rough on whatever is in my pocket and I suppose I am looking for a slim case to protect my investment.

iPaq hw6945 release date?

When can I get a Hewlett-Packard iPaq model hw6945, for SF/Bay Area use? HP's website just says 'Summer 2006,' which is not really a very firm commitment. The prototypes are out there and getting tested and reviewed; Global Locate has already deployed and tested the new GPS chipset that the machine uses, which is my main reason for wanting this particular iteration of the iPaq line.

Comments on where or how I should obtain the device are welcome as well. People who want to critique the choice of device are welcome too; bear in mind that I wanted a single device that can act as cell phone, PDA/organizer, pocket PC, web browser, camera, and newest-generation GPS.

Can anyone subtract a phone from a PDAPhone and give me what's left over?

I'm looking for a PDA like this only without the cellphone capibilities, and for a similar price (better yet: lower price!). As always, there is I'm pretty stoked about that iPaq. The only thing is no cell providers in my area (least of all the one with my current contract) takes a sim card cell phone. Do'h! So, I figure that if I take the cell out of the equation, I should be able to get something of similar functionality for less cash (maybe $200 total or so). The biggies for me are running a version of window's moble that's .NET friendly (at least, I think this one can do that), SD slot, Infrared port, Bluetooth, WiFi, and handwriting recognition. Oh, and enough RAM to install a couple of programs wouldn't hurt. :) Bonus points if anyone can do all this for $180 after shipping! :D

Thanks, everyone!

charging an iPaq

PocketPCfilter: I want to charge my iPaq 3955 and use an accessory simultaneously - unfortunately, the AC uses the same plug at the bottom of the unit. SO: Is there a way to split the plug, or am I going to have to splice the two things together somehow? I've asked this question on PocketPC boards to no avail. (I'm not a huge fan of PPC, but this is for a specific little project.)
