Intellectual property question. A married couple are both coders who have the same software skills (let's say in coding OCR software). One spouse runs Company A (sole proprietorship, OCR software). The other works for Company B which is now contracting with Company C to work on their OCR code, so that spouse is being required by Company B to sign an NDA (no noncompete) which protects Company C's intellectual property. I just picked up an Apple Airport Extreme and am attempting to integrate it into my home network, and my old router is jealous. My intent is to use the Airport to serve IP addresses to all my devices via DHCP, and use its wireless capabilities for my 802.11g computers (looking forward to 802.11n). I've pressed my old Linksys WRT54G into use providing wireless access to my 802.11b devices (2 wifi Internet radios), to isolate them from dragging down the .g devices' wireless access speeds. Someone posted a spam comment on my blog that came from IP address "192.168.0.165". Since that IP address is reserved for private networks, how on earth did they do that? Is this "IP spoofing"? If so, how does it work?

WindowsAdminFilter - I've got a small, single controller Active Directory domain comprised entirely of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition boxes. Things are ticking along nicely, bar one aggravating DNS problem. Is hacking just to find out the identity of someone illegal? The short story is I'm being harassed via email, have IP addresses, headers, all that, but not enough stuff that comes off as threatening enough to get anyone in authority to care. I downloaded and tried to use BO2k and realized I'm in over my head. I contacted a few "public" hackers and asked for help, but they claimed they don't do that sort of thing. I just want to know who this person is who knows my name and details about my family. I don't want credit card numbers, passwords, etc. Is what I want illegal? Is it _how_ I want it that's the problem? Public replies or emails welcome: painted_nails_20@yahoo.com

Am I being lied to? I am receiving threatening/harassing emails from several yahoo accounts, but the person/people involved all have IP addresses that trace to a single university. The university has an IT Security Officer who tells me that he's done everything he could to track the IPs (they are all different but from the same institution) and he can't pin them to a single computer or person. I do not necessarily believe him. I have looked at other questions and answers, but would like to know what you think. I should mention that a login and password is used to access the network at this institution, even for the wireless network.

My router logs show that I have been under what looks like a sustained low level DOS attack for quite a while now. An example entry is: 1 Blocked by DoS protection 10.69.0.1 I assume the IP is spoofed because it is a reserved IP and I am on a 192.168.*.* local network. What can I find out or determine about the attack? What tools and resources are available?

Rhapsody has launched for free on the web, and it's compatible with Macs. Great - except I'm based in the UK, and they're using IP blocking to prevent non-US residents from using the service. So what's the most efficient, most reliable, least painful way for my UK-based Mac to spoof Rhapsody into thinking I'm in the States? I don't mind paying a little.

I want to setup a Windows 2003 server using my dynamic IP address that I have from Comcast. How can I make this happen? I have a linksys Gateway (WCG200) that has the server and a few other computers connected to it. I am trying to setup a small server for my printing/web hosting/file sharing/remote access needs. I need to see how to setup my DNS & DHCP settings for this to happen. Also I have my own domain name which I would like to use. Can I use programs from companies like no-ip.com to setup my web site so if anyone types my registered domain it will find my site? Remember that I will be using a dynamic address. Or the last straw is to get a static IP address. Where can I do so(for the cheapest price)?

I have encountered a website that records my IP address on my messages that I post for all to see every time I post. This makes me paranoid because I feel that even though most of the people on the board are cool; someone with malicious intent may try to use that information against me. How can I post to this board anonymously? And if I can't... is there a way to "mask" my IP address of fake another one in it's place? BTW, I am using Mac OS X TIGER (if that's any help).

How did the Special-Use IPv4 Addresses get to be that way? In the relevant IRCs it says what the special address ranges are, but I can't find anywhere how, say, 192.168.0.0/16 ended up reserved for private networks. Were there just a bunch of nerds sitting around one day who were like, "193...no, no, that's no good. How about 192?"
