I'll be in Iowa City from March 25 to the end of April. I'll need a place to stay for a month and a week. Do you all have craigslist out there? If not, what are the best resources for finding lodging for this duration at something more like rental rates than hotel rates? Thanks!

My wife and I file our federal taxes jointly but our Iowa taxes separately. She works part-time and has a fraction of my income. It appears that we would pay lower state taxes if our income was split more evenly between us. Can I make gifts to her (of cash or perhaps shares), deduct them from my taxable income, and add them to her taxable income?

In Sioux City, IA, this weekend. What to do and where should I stay? AirBnB fails--Yelp is anemic--the center does not hold. I like weird bnb's, actual humans, small towns, couch surfs, glbt stuff, sci-fi. Enjoy rural life just fine :) Happy to spend money. (Me: 30s, male, if it matters!)

My husband and I are moving to the Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa and we need some recommendations. He grew up there, so we are familiar with general geography and institutions like Jim's Ribs, Whitey's ice cream, and Maid-Rite. But he hasn't lived there since high school-- we need a realtor, neighborhood suggestions, doctors, etc. My Google-fu has given me plenty of lists but I'd like info from real people.

My wife, baby daughter, and I are moving to Ames, Iowa this summer for work -- I'm just finishing grad school and am starting a job at ISU, and she's going to stay at home with our daughter for a while. We care about schools down the road but not immediately. We're open to renting or buying and would prefer a house but an apartment would be fine. I'd like to live biking distance from the university if possible, but not in a college-student-type rental house. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Summer isn't THAT far off . . . already trying to come up with camping/hiking spots in the Midwest for once it gets warm. Help! Looking for specific recommendations for spots in the IL/IA/WI area, plus whatever other random camping and backpacking tips you want to throw my way. Bonus points for places I can bring my dog, although I don't mind leaving her with my parents for a week either.

And if there are other ways of getting fast Internet in the sticks, I'd love to hear about that, too.
