I know I have a lot of bacon, but how much exactly? 40 lbs? 80? More??!

My husband and I own and manage a small farm, where we raise heritage/organic-fed/pastured/blah blah pork, beef, lamb, goat, poultry, etc. We sell cuts of frozen meat by the pound at farmers' markets and direct to consumers via a CSA-type model. However, we have nothing in place for managing what we have on hand, other than vague "I think the bacon was in the bottom on the left side, there should be enough for market today"-type information. We clearly need to get some kind of inventory management in place. [more inside]

At work I need a way to track job folders without 'seeing' them.

We have a physical job folder that moves from department to department along with a database system. As much as I want to give up the paper folder, we need to keep it. So I ask you how best to tag each so I can walk in a room and some device tell me what job numbers are in this area? [more inside]

What's a good way to keep track of customer data?

After a crazy Kickstarter adventure, I suddenly find myself with ~65 products to create, 2000 customers to send them to, and loads of information (names, email addresses, shipping details, order selections, order fulfillment status, funds donated) from 4 different sources (Kickstarter surveys, Surveymonkey.com, paypal.com, private emails). I need some way to keep track of all of it, so that I can easily find and export information (Who ordered product X? Who ordered product Y and hasn't yet had that order fulfilled), easily change entries (Customer B: Can I switch from product X to Y?) and easily add entries (New customer C). What's my best bet?

Best way to manage a small library at work?

I am buying a bookshelf to centralize the books (<500) currently strewn about our office at work. I would like to setup a simple system for keeping track of books in inventory, and manage who borrows what. Ideally there would be a simple web-based piece of software built specifically for this, but I am open to a more lo-if solution if necessary. Bonus points if its not specific to books, but able to manage more things to let people borrow among a trusted group. There are about 150 people in the office.

Who named Ghost Ditch? And when?

This past weekend I drove from Los Angeles to Tucson via Interstate-10, and took to noticing the names of the various ditches and washes that are spanned by the highway out in the middle of the high lonesome desert. There are a lot of them. Ghost Ditch, Taro Ditch, Larry Ditch, Stubby Wash, Fornat Wash, Itta Wash, Edom, Mccoy, Rollie, Bula, Sutro, Calotus, Esso, Arco, Teed, Turala, maybe a hundred between the ditches and the washes. The names don't seem to refer to nearby municipalities (there aren't any) or other geographical features, and are clearly part of the National Bridge Inventory. How were these 'waterways' named? Who named them? Were they named before the freeway required infrastructure to pass over them, or during the construction process, or when the NBI was implemented, or after the fact altogether? Math Help - Library Contest Edition

Math Help! We're doing a big inventory project in my library this summer and we want to attach weekly prizes to it to help motivate the poor students who have to do all the scanning. Trick is, students do not work the same amount of hours per week, so we would like some way of weighting each student's output so that those that work less feel like they can compete with those who work more while not disadvantaging those with longer hours by requiring them to go insane in order to keep up. How to keep things fair and sane? [more inside]

I need a pantry app to help me inventory my food!

I need a pantry/food-inventorying app, and I'm willing to pay for one. We have lots of food stored up, but we don't have a pantry per se. By necessity, the food is dispersed in the basement, kitchen cabinets, closets, etc. Most of it is stuff we would use up pretty quickly if it were convenient -- instead, we can't find it when we need it, or don't know we have it, and end up buying more. There must be an app for this, right? [more inside]
