Who gets to post on office intranet?

A co-worker felt that the policy of only allowing Managers and administrators to post stories to our office intranet was not fair. We're willing to post other people's news tips if they're relevant. This person has repeatedly sent out all-office emails rather than sending them in as tips to the website team, and has been warned before. He complained that some of his tips were not acted on promptly and were only posted after he made a second request. I don't set the policy, but I might be swayed by the idea that such gatekeeping is not fair, at least if it's not implemented consistently. Is anyone else convinced? How do you handle it at your office? [more inside]

Need to create locally-hosted, searchable database of vendors--help!

I maintain for my company a spreadsheet that contains a list of vendors and their associated information: address, contact(s), service area(s), service(s), website, and so on. It's becoming rather unwieldy as a vendor might have up to 5 different services, 2 addresses, 3 contacts each with their own email and phone number, etc. The information's all there, it's just very annoying to use. I had the idea of creating an "intranet" type website that staff could use to filter vendors by name, service area, service type, and so on, with the results displaying in an easy-to-read format (easier than a mile-long Excel sheet, anyway). I am open to solutions like Wordpress and Joomla, just not sure how best to implement. Any ideas? [more inside]

Low-cost, low-maintenance web infrastructure for volunteer group?

I have been tasked with finding a web solution for a volunteer group associated with a university. There are already pages on one of the departments' websites, however, it will be months before any changes can be made to that as it's under the rule of a CMS which is about to be migrated and to which we won't be able to really do anything until November. We want all the usual stuff like a blog and a Twitter widget and latest news and yadda yadda, but anything we add - and possibly anything we remove - would have to wait till November if we use the existing hosting arrangement. This is why I want to stick up another web infrastructure for us somewhere else, probably not hosted by the university. [more inside]

What are the options for free intranet hosting?

The company I work for is moving its data storage and processing to the cloud—with the exception of the intranet (which the company’s currently paying to be hosted). There’s a feeling that the intranet should be kept separate from the company’s other documents. What are the options for free intranet hosting? Does such a thing even exist? The current system is very basic, and we really just need 200-300 files (Word, Excel, pdf) to be available in simply displayed categories in an area accessible by staff. Any suggestions?

Is Liferay really as terrible as it seems to be?

Can you explain to me why a company would choose Liferay as their CMS? Because, as a user experience designer, I'm baffled. As far as I can tell, this CMS forces sites to have the worst user experience I've ever seen. Are there benefits on the backend that make it worth causing users this kind of pain? Am I missing something here? [more inside]

FOR THE HORDE! ... or some other Groupware package...

I've taxed myself with saving the company money with clever use of smoke, mirrors, and computers! One of the things I'd like to replace is our proprietary intranet site that is costing us at least $5000 a year. I'd to go with something Open Source that we can manage ourselves. What do You think will meet our needs? And how can we use our Intranet better? [more inside]

Is there anyway to display a word document as a webpage?

im developing a *low key* department site for the company intranet. We've decided that ill write a simple menu that loads a word document into the facing frame for each menu item - this way i don't have to write any SQL or an interface for keeping the performance data up to date (the department employees will simply keep the word files up to date)

now the question - is there anyway to display a word document as a webpage (meaning: without the rulers and such along the sides and top)? [more inside]

What opensource CMS would you recommend for ease of use, robustness, and customizability?

Some of the answers I got to this post made me think about developing cheap, easy-to-use interactive Intranets for various corporate clients (a la this), based on opensource CMS and/or blogware, thus eliminating licensing fees and saving a bundle on programming costs / time. I am looking for advice on what application to use. [more inside] [more inside]
