I'd love to work here...in two months.

I have an interview tomorrow. I had a phone interview that went well enough that they’ve asked me to meet other people on the team in person. The job seems like a good fit for my skills and based on what I’ve learned so far, I’d like the job. The issue: I’ve planned a month-long trip for July. [more inside]

How do I thank multiple interviewers for a single position?

I want to send a post-interview thank you email but I am a little unclear as to the best way of going about it. I had five 30 minute sessions with one to two employees each; the last session was with the head of the group I'd be working for. Should I send one email to all employees, an email to each session group, an email to only the senior interviewers (3 people), or some other iteration?

Best practices for approaching busy ex-employers for reference? And how to explain longer stay at university?

I'm a new grad entering the workforce. What's the best way for me to approach busy busy BUSY ex-bosses (so busy they have phone gatekeepers, cuz they're always on the phone with Very Important People) to use them as a reference? I left them on good terms, but it's been at least two years and no contact in between. Several related questions ahead. [more inside]

Interview Scheduling & the new grad - advice?

I'm a recent MLIS grad who just scored an interview with a municipal information management office. Unfortunately, the job is 4 hours away and Greyhound can't get me there for a face to face interview before mid afternoon. I plan to ask about interview slots in the late afternoon, but would it be unreasonable to ask about a skype interview if none are available? Other suggestions are also very welcome.

Question about interviewing the interviewers

Question about interviewing the interviewers: International differences?..I was taught at uni that its a good idea to treat the interview as a bit of a test run, in other words interview the interviewers to see if you really would like the job that is being offered by asking a few interesting questions etc....but when I tell people (In Australia) about this idea they are horrified and seem to think that's a sure fire way to talk yourself out of a potential job. What do mefites think? Can anyone give me a good rationale why you should pretend you are interviewing the employer? Was I taught the wrong thing? Am I explaining it wrong?

Should I tell them I eventually want to teach?

Should I mention my plan to continue academic research in my interview for a fundraising management job at a small college that is part of a major research university? Can you name something German?

There's a German, or Austrian comedian that goes around the US in public places dense with pedestrians and asks questions (mock interview style) about Germany, while playing up a euro-german sort of archetype. I have searched to no avail, if anyone could link or send a name it would very appreciated. And, it is so funny if I don't see it I will die. Thanks!

Should I be paid for the work I produced in this interview?

I recently attended a job interview which included a copywriting test - I was given some facts about an upcoming event and asked to write a press release. I did not get the job, however, the press release was released exactly as I wrote it (without my byline) and was picked up by a small local news blog and a local religious newspaper, as well as being used in the organisation's internal newsletter. The headline I wrote was also tweeted with a link to the event info on the organisation's website. [more inside]

How to get a supervisor recommendation when policy says I can't.

I am currently wanting to apply for some job openings within my field (library) and external. Per the norm, the employer wants at least one current work recommendation from a supervisor. The problem: at my workplace no employees are allowed to give work recommendations based on issues of legality that would make the library liable. How in the hell do I then put down a recommendation from a boss who likes me but will not do a recommendation? My previous job experience though not spotty was in retail with no promotion to speak of. I have been also using my professor(s) from grad school 6 years ago who happily remembers my scholastic performance. What would you do? Thanks for your thoughts.

Why are you the best?

I have a final interview for a Project Manager position. This job is awesome. One of the questions they would like me to answer is "Why are you the best candidate for this position?". How do I blow them away with my answer? The role requires someone who is passionate about work and life, can juggle multiple projects, and can managed a range of different stakeholders. I can do all of this like nobody's business. But I am sure a lot of the other candidates can as well. How do I approach answering this question and winning this position?

Awesome Kick-Off

As part of my interview process, I have been asked to kick-off a project to a pretend client. This is for an interactive agency in LA. There will be 5 people acting as stakeholders. I really want this job and want to leave an awesome impression. What things can I do to set myself apart? What are your tips for awesome kick-off meetings? I need to demonstrate my skills as a meeting facilitator and project manager. I am looking for anything that will set me apart including handing out candy / fruit, using an awesome slide deck, or simply facilitating a awesome kick-off. What days of the week are job interviews most commonly held on?

In the process of requesting a favorable schedule at my part-time job that allow me to interview for positions on my days off. I'm just going to assume that these interviews can last a full day, so I don't think there's a chance I could work and interview in the same day. I am seeking a position in marketing research. If I should need to work two to three weekdays, which days should I request off? My guess is that employers are usually busy the beginning of the week, Monday and Tuesday, so maybe most interviews fall later in the week. Thanks for your help!
