"I'm desperate" is probably not the right answer.

Only a few graduate programs have invited me to interviews. One of the programs isn't highly ranked or well-known and isn't in the greatest location (let's just say it would be unusual for someone from my state to go...where? THERE?), but I need to think of a compelling explanation for why I would choose their program over others during the interview. To be frank, they'll probably develop as good a reputation as any other, but there's nothing special about their program that would make people rush halfway across the country. Still, how do I avoid sounding desperate or contrived during the interview?

How do I fix my interview/HR screw up?

I've been working freelance from multiple sources while looking for a perm job. I interviewed at a company and they asked what I was currently doing. I said that I've been working on Project A and Project B from Company C. They seemed very interested in Project B, but I realized afterwards that that project is not from Company C like I said, but from Company D (who I haven't been able to contact since the project ended). I'm an idiot, and HR wants to check references, what do I do? [more inside]

When do you re-express interest in a job interview?

I received an email from a job I'd applied to a couple of months ago requesting my availability for a phone interview. I responded via email (per their request) the same day with my limited availability. As a healthcare provider, it seems that tight schedules are the norm, but I haven't heard back, four days later. When, if ever, is it appropriate to send a follow-up email? [more inside]

Pre-interview nerves with former interviewer.. please help

After a crazy amount of jobless time ofcourse everything has come at once. I am having interview after interview + my head is splitting. Todays interview was tough - creepy cab driver in thick snow then being kept waiting nearly an hr for the interview whilst getting increasingly anxious.. How much feedback do you expect after a job interview?

If you go in for a job interview, and don't get the job, how much feedback do you expect? Or, if you're the person doing the hiring, how much feedback do you give? Do you expect/give the news over the phone or in writing? What to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my job?

I've received a "Performance Improvement Plan" due to poor output and communication problems. This is almost entirely due to issues in my personal life that are resolving themselves. However, at most companies (probably including mine), a PIP is basically a way to build a paper trail before firing someone. While I'm going to work as hard as I can to improve performance, this is probably the time to start looking for other jobs. What is ethical for me to tell interviewers about why I'm leaving my current position? There are plenty of things I can cite that I don't like about this job, but none of them would normally be enough for me to quit. [more inside]

Interviewing future housemates

When looking for a new place to live, there is a question I want to ask my potential future housemates, but I can't figure out how to phrase it. My best attempt so far is "How particular is your household about doing things a certain way?" or perhaps "How many high-maintenance things do you have in your house, and what kind of care do they need?" WWEMD? (What Would Errol Morris Do?)

Something that happened many years ago in my community is coming back to the fore in the form of multiple lawsuits. There was a major cover-up operation back when it all went down and most of these people, perp and victim included, have moved on, in a way, from that time.
