I'm doing some freelance journalism-y things, and I sometimes need to interview people over the phone whilst plugging away at my "day job." How do I record these calls? I have an iphone 4, if that makes a difference.

I want to be great at interviewing people, but going to journalism school isn't an option. What books will help me most? How do I learn to recognize and ask great questions? How do I prepare? Who are exceptional interviewers I should check out, and what do you think I can specifically learn from them?

I have an ongoing opportunity to interview musicians, but I've been fearful of being the most boring interviewer ever, or at least failing to pull the musician out of Dull Interview Mode and into Chatting Naturally About Interesting Things Mode. With that, I'm looking for tips and ideas for interviewing people, and/or examples of really good interviews.

How do I extract information from people? I'm a self-taught journalist who profiles people in my community. Interviews always go well when we discuss the interviewee's special area of knowledge, but I stall when trying to move beyond that.

Every time I hear a journalist say "Tell me about ..." when interviewing someone on television, I get really annoyed. It seems so incredibly presumptuous, pompous and impolite to demand an answer of a guest like that. Yet it happens all over the world. Is this standard journalistic practice? What's the reasoning behind it? Anyone else feel the same way or am I being a relic?

What are the best tricks, using an audio program like Audacity, for improving a recording of a phone interview where the other guy sounds really quiet, but your voice is loud? What compression/decibal settings are typically best, and what other effects will bring the quiet voice up -- perhaps without making the loud voice much louder?
