I listen a lot to Radio Paradise for a nice general music radio station but since I stopped driving I've been missing the trashy top 20 radio. Of course I could stream one of those stations on the computer, but listening to that many adds would seem silly. Pandora is fine, but it tends to be too limited in its scope. So does anyone know a good, human curated radio station that mixes in all of the new pop music?
Is one of the streaming services really great for a radio-like experience, with randomized and/or curated playlists? I don't want to have to build playlists myself -- it takes forever, and I can just do that in iTunes if I want (and in fact I have done that for years, but am sick of it). I would like to be able to pick a genre, mood or event, and have it be able to play songs for many hours. The ones I've tried so far have fallen short. [more inside]
Metafilter is an interesting community in that it is open to anyone to join, but it is semi-walled in that you have to pay $5 before you are allowed to post. I'm very interested in observing how various communities operate and I was wondering if there were any other notable (reasonable active) communities that have a similar "semi-walled" model. What I mean is that there is some kind of restriction on joining (like Metafilter's $5 payment or submitting an application), but anyone can apply. [more inside]
I am reminded of Google retiring GReader... the way that it changed my online life and the uproar that came along with it. Except this time there is no uproar or teams of companies try to market their competitive offerings to me. Where do I go now? [more inside]
My Win 7 desktop computer sporadically loses internet connectivity for hours at a time every 1-2 days, while wifi continues working fine. I think there's something wrong with the software that drives my Ethernet card. Can you help me fix it? [more inside]
Hi, I'd appreciate advice on whether or not I should buy the "Power Quadrant System" to help me through a brief period of unemployment. [more inside]
After a recent change in routers by my service provider it's taking a depressingly long amount of time to connect to the internet. I need a fix explained to me like I'm your grandmother's less computer savvy friend. Details henceforth. [more inside]
I have a domain name hosted by GoDaddy. For a year or so now I've not had a website, I've just had some DNS settings which 1) routed my email to gApps using MX records and 2) allowed me to use Jabber through the domain name by pointing the XMBB [more inside]
Help me find an online tool for selecting a wifi router, or at least help me find reliable reviews or a buying guide. [more inside]
I want to track a variety of topics passively using services on the interwebs. Google Alerts, RSS Feeds, and IFTTT are not solving the problem (or rather, I am not sufficiently solving the problem with them). Help me use available services to get to this promised land. [more inside]
Are there any good resources for helping a low-income senior get Internet access? [more inside]
It's fund drive time, and I have been a contributor and a host promoting fund drives for public and community radio. But a common complaint I hear from people is public radio encourages them to do their part, meaning contribute. The promise is the sooner you do, the sooner the drive will end. [more inside]
I want to be able to treat my android wifi hotspot like a router and moderate the content that I can access through it. Is there something like a hosts file I can use? I want to block distracting websites. [more inside]
I have a few days off following the holiday crazies and I'm planning a mini road-trip to escape for these few days to unwind, hide from life and work on some personal projects. I really don't care where I go, but I'm looking for 4 things: an awesome private jacuzzi tub, a solid internet connection, and a walkable location -- all within 6 hours drive of Vancouver. [more inside]
I want to use a Google Hangout "On Air" for a project, but a tiny limitation is getting in the way. I would like to bypass the 'Press to Talk' functionality with a tiny browser script/hack/modification. My programming knowledge is tiny, but I am sure this could be done super super simply with a script loaded in the browser. Perhaps there's better solution. Any ideas? [more inside]
I'm looking for a site or Chrome extension that will, with one click, show the scores of the teams I follow. All of them but no other teams. [more inside]
I'm slightly obsessed with well-put-together science-y treatments like those done by XKCD's "What If" and ASAPScience. Given this obsession, where are other places I might be able to get my fix? :) (Note: Video is fun, but I'm not opposed to reading, either!) [more inside]

This is making me crazy, but google is failing me: Isn't there some ancient list of "why no one is replying to your internet/forum/list post"? Stuff like, "nothing more needs to be said," or "something else." It's only like 3-5 items, and I think it's a classic, but I can't seem to dig it up.
Over the past week my internet speed seems to have taken a dive, and I'd like to make sure I'm correct before calling the cable company. [more inside]

The website for my college newspaper is undergoing a bit of an overhaul and we were looking for a good WordPress theme to replace our current one. It should be simple, with a header image, something to feature a "front page" story as well as categorical images for sports, campus events, etc.
Hey all, I'm looking for some listenable eclectic international music radio stations. I'm a rock/indie lover, but get bored listening exclusively to it like on BBC Radio 6 or Radio Paradise. Paris Radio FIP is great, but I'd like to vary things a bit and sometimes am not in the mood for jazz hour. [more inside]
As a follow up to this, my son is flying to Dublin tomorrow from the US, attending DCU. He's got an apartment lined up but will need to get Internet service for it and a SIM card for his iPhone 4S shortly after he arrives. He'll be there for about a year. We're looking for specific recommendations for Internet service and mobile providers, and where/how to sign up! [more inside]
I have an ATV2. It asks me to turn on home sharing. I do. ATV insists that i turn on home sharing. It worked in my previous location excepting a few times, where I just unplugged the router and ATV and replugged back in. It worked here on initial setup the first try but a few days later this whole stuff happens. It worked again only after I did a complete factory reset. I have read many of the threads online and perhaps it is a bit of daftness on my part. This previous thread on mefi helped the gentleman with his question. I didn't actually understand it very well. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard. The ATV does connect to Netflix and all other things. Just not my computer. [more inside]
Recently I haven't been able to read anything on the web without seeing, in the "From the web" or "Related content" sections at the bottom of the page, two disgusting images that trigger my Trypophobia. I'm not going to link to the articles / images to avoid driving any more traffic to them, but one is an article on the infamous Surinam toad, the other is the one with the image of the person's knees covered in indentations from allegedly having knelt in frozen peas. Both links usually appears with some variation of the heading "You'll never believe what this!" These images are viscerally disgusting and disturbing to me, and I believe they are of course intended to be in order to drive clicks, and I want to stop seeing them (I see them on average about 3-4 times a day for the last couple of weeks.) I already use AdBlock for Google Chrome, but this doesn't block "sponsored content". Is there anything else I can do?

You're at a location with available WiFi. You have a signal, the signal is reported as "strong," but no web pages will open up. I have noticed this regularly, usually in hotels. I would understand it if the signal was marginal, but why does this happen with a strong signal?

So, I've been recently tasked with managing my company's Facebook page. I haven't been a big user of any social media sites before, but I'm managing ok.: new content is getting added, banners are updated, likes go up, a couple new users... that kind of thing. So here's what happened: one post got a huge Reach number compared to all my other posts and I don't know why. I'd really like to know why, so that, if at all possible, I can repeat it. [more inside]

We moved in to our apartment last October. It provides public wifi as part of the amenities. Problem is, it doesn't works consistently. "Works" as defined by not being able to simply go from one link to another without the computer/tablet being used dropping connection or lagging for over 5 minutes. We don't expect super streaming or anything. Just basic 1999 level internet. I have called Meraki (owned by Cisco) over 14 times since last October with varying responses and excuses and promises of call-back by managment, with few calls back. [more inside]
I need to set up a new google voice number to use my Obihai OBI100 strictly for work. What cheap options are there available to me to do so? [more inside]
So, I really like how Let Me Google That For You gives me the ability to send someone a shortened link to a specific google search. What I don't like is the built-in implication that the asker is lazy and that I am annoyed by the question. Are there any kinder, gentler alternatives to LMGTFY? (I don't want to simply use the search results URL because I don't want the results to be localized to me).
Looking for Parisian hotels in Monmartre or in central Paris with US-quality wifi or Internet access during the Christmas season. No wifi tokens or credits or anything like that, looking for flat fee wifi within guest rooms for at least one device. That the hotel be nice to stay at is a plus.
An employee in my office is scheduled to be fired today for "non-productive use of company time." That's a fancy way of saying, "Playing around on the internet all day instead of getting his work done." I happen to know that another co-worker is at risk for the same fate. Should I warn her to change her ways while there is still time, or stay out of it? [more inside]

I am trying to access my home Mac remotely from the office (I use RealVNC). Unfortunately, there was an Internet outage, which is restored, but the Mac is no longer connected to the Internet. It is however connected to the router, which is accessible from the Internet. AFAIK the only way I can get the Mac reconnected is to reboot it. Is there any way I can reboot the Mac via the router? Or is there some other way to restore the Internet connection to the Mac remotely? I am pretty ignorant on these matters. Thanks for your help.
I have a friend who, because of financial reasons, doesn't have internet access at home. I'd like to somehow hook her up with access as a gift. Is there a way I can do this? [more inside]
Up until this morning, I have always been able to use my 3g network, make a call and browse the internet at the sametime on my iPhone 4s. This morning when I went to use my phone a message appeared (while connected to 3g) that stated, Cannot Verify Server Identity. Once I got that all figured out, the capability to use the internet while on 3g and talking on the phone was gone. I called Verizon and they claim this was never a feature on their iPhones and told me I must have a special phone. After some investigating, what they are telling me seems to be true, but I know that I have been able to do this the last year or two that I've had this phone. I did it last night while talking to my brother and relaying information that I had looked up for him. But! 8 hours later this feature is now gone and only works when I'm hooked up to my wireless. I'm just severely bugged that this is all of a sudden gone, when I can recall being in my car doing all this (safely parked) and talking to my husband while hes at work. What could have happened? Was I just imagining this for the last couple years or did they somehow take this capability away from me this morning?
I'm always impressed lurking around here by the expertise of folks when it comes to finding sources/answers. Obviously, there are a lot of librarians and information specialists whose jobs involve research, but still it's clear many of you are much better than me when it comes to using google. So, how can I better? What google search strategies do you use? What resources would you all recommend? [more inside]
