Computer security question. Is a typical home PC, when it's connected to the net via a cable to a DSL modem, any more or less secure against intrusions than if the same computer were plugged into the network on the campus of a typical, large American university? Say, for example, a UC campus.
On-line/Internet dating Filter - I'm 62, I've tried a few Internet dating sites in the last 2years, met a few interesting guys, mostly several hours away, and took a break. I'm often interested in alternatives to the mainstream. [more inside]

When using a Dial Up Internet Service, naturally, I am tying up my telephone. I am seeking a software package (preferably a freeware download) that will notify me of any incoming telephone calls while I am online. I can remember watching a TV ad for such a program, but have not been able to locate this program/service. PS> My Dial Up serivce is no more than a back up for my regular high speed internet. However, as long as I am subscribing to this dial up service, I might as well also use it during the day as a news service, ect.

My company has recently started internet monitoring. I believe they have set up some kind of proxy server. Unfortunately, they have blocked sites that I use for productivity. Is there any way of easily getting around the proxy server. I'm not sure if I'm right, but there must be a setting in Internet Explorer that can route my websites through another server? How do I do this and who do I use. I don't mind paying, but would perfer free. The owner of my company has become big brother and it's unfortunate because now sites can only be "work related" which can be widely (or narrowly defined) I would also like to know how to find out what they are using to do this (for curiosity purposes). Where can I look on my computer to see this. Also, I think they may have set up remote viewing. Is there any way to detect this?

The Talmud & The Internet: It occurred to me the other day that collaborative web spaces - blogs with commentary, wiki pages, etc. - might have a distant forebear in the Jewish Talmud (it should be noted, however, that I am not a Jew, nor have I a very good understanding of Jewish scripture). After asking around, I found a link to an article by David Porush and a few mentions of the book linked above (the reviews of which are less than stellar). Are there other scholarly articles or books that might prove helpful in exploring this topic?
I've recently got into watching sports webcasts but find that the picture quality isn't great. My internet connection is 400Mb/sec so I suspect that the problem lies with my graphics card which is a Mobility Radeon 7500. Is there some way to confirm this before I splash the cash and upgrade it? I'm running on Windows XP and have 512Mb RAM. I'm not sure what else is relevant.
