A friend paid to have a web site designed and a domain name registered. The web page designer registered the domain in their name, not in my friends name. The domain name just expired and the designer has dropped off of the face of the earth. My friend wants to take possession of the domain. How should she go about this? Will there be a huge delay/big hassle? [more inside]

I am pretty sure I'm just being paranoid, but I would like to check with the savvy crowd here first.
I have listed a range/stove for sale on Craigslist and I got a response from someone who's interested. He has asked for my name and address to send me the payment. All of that is relatively normal.

My 80 year old Mom would like to learn to use a laptop. She is homebound and so classes are out of the question, and I live on the other side of the country. Any suggestions for books, tutorial programs, etc? She is very very intimidated (and anxious by nature) so the more basic the better. She understands the concepts of what the internet is and what a web page is and what links are, it's the actual turning on booting up double clicking mechanics of use that's scaring her. Anyone have resources that worked with their parents? (Sorry if we've been through this, I can't find it if so).

I tried searching for this question but I didn't have much of a plan on how to phrase unique search terms -- sorry. But, yesterday -- my internet explorer would put the title of a webpage I was browing -- like "Metafilter" -- on the title bar in the english language you are now reading. However, today, it's all in an Asian language. [more inside]

I have a blog at http://depravedlibrarian.blogspot.com (I've also registerd the domain and will eventually put up a forwarding page). I misstyped this in the location bar: http://depravedlibrarian.blogpsot.com and found that registrant for this site and all the other Amazingbiblestudies sites (I checked 3 other Blogger address) is the same registrant. While it's not exactly domain hijacking, what can I, or should I do about this? How else can I get the word out about this? Thanks for your suggestions.

I know to do this I need access to a POP3 server from Qwest.net (right?). Qwest wants an extra $20 a month over the $50 I pay for DSL for this (thieves!) How can I get the mail from my domain host to my outlook express for free (ie is there a free POP3 server or something that allows me to bypass Qwest and the $20 shakedown?)

My identical twin sister is getting married in September. I'm throwing her a party for the foreign relatives that can't attend in June.
After that June party I'll be visiting a long time dear friend from the 'net to see how we get along, and if it works out I'll be moving there in September.
The problem is, my sister doesn't approve of what I am doing - in a very patronizing and closed minded way - and I am honour bound to celebrate her wedding and be supportive and positive, without regard to her attitude about my joyous event. [more inside]

I have been using 2 methods to generate my web galleries:
Picasa to Blogger.com or the web gallery tool within PhotoShop 8cs.
The Picasa is nice, but displaying the images in blogger sucks- the images are all in one VERY long column.
Photoshop's templates suck, and the resize has limitations on size.
Is there an easier way to take my full res images, resize them, enter description, then publish to a html table format?

I have an 11 year old son who is active in a couple of Yu-Gi-Oh message boards. There are a group of people who frequent these places and post inappropriate web links on occasion. One time, someone posted a porn site disguised as a harmless link. Doing that seems like there is a some kind of law being broken yet I did not know where to turn to report it (yeah, like going to the city police will really help...pppthhh). Another time, someone posted this link (this just can't be legal):
My kid was very upset about the bonzai kitty thing and the porn. I want to be able to do something about this but do not know what, where, how. I am wondering if there is an online mechanism to turn to. These Yu-Gi-Oh sites are otherwise great for my kid and I do not want to restrict his access just because of a few perv's and/or freaks.

When I have a question, I ask it. Simple enough, right? Are there any psychological/educational repercussions to having endless access to information? Are we becoming less intelligent because we are not seeking answers for ourselves, and instead relying on the vast database of knowledge on the Internet to answer questions that could be better answered via actual physical reasoning? It seems that I remember there being a "term" for this phenomenon - if it actually exists. Any help? [more inside]

This is ecommerce software, so permissions probably are more important than usual. I just had a hard time finding what the "." refers to when googling.
