The Talmud & The Internet

The Talmud & The Internet: It occurred to me the other day that collaborative web spaces - blogs with commentary, wiki pages, etc. - might have a distant forebear in the Jewish Talmud (it should be noted, however, that I am not a Jew, nor have I a very good understanding of Jewish scripture). After asking around, I found a link to an article by David Porush and a few mentions of the book linked above (the reviews of which are less than stellar). Are there other scholarly articles or books that might prove helpful in exploring this topic?

Do I need to upgrade my graphics card?

I've recently got into watching sports webcasts but find that the picture quality isn't great. My internet connection is 400Mb/sec so I suspect that the problem lies with my graphics card which is a Mobility Radeon 7500. Is there some way to confirm this before I splash the cash and upgrade it? I'm running on Windows XP and have 512Mb RAM. I'm not sure what else is relevant.

Internet pipes are down

Is there a major Internet backbone down somewhere? And how can we check it? I notice Dreamhost is inaccessible. Doing a tracert via my ISP, and using the tools at all-nettools.com, tracert.com, etc, neither can even get onto a backbone. Is a chunk of the nation out right now?

What to do w/ a bitchin' fast internet connection.

My new apartment in New York City came equipped with a built-in ethernet internet connection. So far, I've maxed out at just over 1 meg a second, though that's only happened a few times. Besides downloading media via bittorrent and p2p, what recreational net activities should I take advantage of? What's the best way that I can 'speed test' my top d/l speed? Also, any guesses on what type of connection I likely have? T1? T3? How would I find this out without bothering my landlord? [more inside]

I want dialup access to the internet via my cable modem connection at home, more or less rolling my own ISP...

I have a Mac at home running 10.3.9. I would like to plug a telephone line into the modem port and be able to call in to it while I'm on the road using my laptop. I don't need or want access to the files, I don't want or need to see the Tibook's screen, or control the computer at home. I just want dialup access to the internet via my cable modem connection at home, more or less rolling my own ISP. Is this possible? If not with my Mac, what about one of those AirPorts? I heard some of them have modems but some of them don't, anyone else doing anything like this? [more inside]

Internet radio streaming of full albums etc.

Short and simple. I'm interested in finding out if there are any internet radio stations which broadcast full albums. Alternatively any free/pay services which allow you to listen online to full albums rather than just individual tracks. I'm not at this point interested in buying music just listening to it. Please bear in mind I am in the UK and services such as Rhapsody etc. aren't available here AFAIK. Many thanks.

A more structured wiki?

I am looking to incorporate the mediawiki model into a more structured environment. Specifically, users should be able to add "artist" and "album" entities to a music database, and then the content related to these entities should be wikis. These things cannot just be ordinary mediawiki "articles", because I want to make comparisons on the data that requires differentiating between what kind of data it is. Does anyone know of any project that does anything like this, or have any ideas of how to do it with the least amount of coding possible?
