Video and audio of online videos (YouTube, Hulu, etc.) stutter quite often when I play them. My laptop is not old by any means and it's been recently formatted. I've updated all the drivers and tried using both the default and HTML 5 Beta players on YouTube; no difference. Seems to be worst in Chrome. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks.

I have a "WiFi-Ready" SmartTV (meaning it doesn't have a built-in wireless adapter, but has USB ports for one and ethernet port) and I'm looking to avoid the additional adapter by utilizing the fact that it is HDMI 1.4 compliant and my computer is 3 feet away with a decent internet connection. I have the appropriate HDMI /w Ethernet cable but don't know if this is something that was at all intended when the standard was put together. [more inside]
I really love works of fiction that use the style, setup, or form of another media product as a means of storytelling and sometimes subversion. For example: TEDxSummerisle (complete with tweets and botched livestream) and The Theory of Narrative Causality, written primarily in the form of Livejournal posts by the Sherlock Homes fandom (inc comments and bits of fanfic) as well as GChats, TVTropes, and related media. What other similar works are out there? [more inside]
I'm looking for the cheapest way to have home internet and a cell phone. [more inside]
I give up. I saw a flash cartoon. Maybe, what, ten years ago? There was a miniature king. Birds. Talking birds? It was dream-like. The sound sparse and excellent. I remember the thing being theme-wise pretty dark. I've since looked high and low and have not been able to find it. Any ideas?
I'm interested in what people have done to find and then delete their personal information (address, especially) from online directories. I've deleted my info from WhitePages and Spokeo, but I'm wondering what other sites I should look at or if there's a master directory of some sort out there. Googling doesn't turn up much, but I know my information could still be out there. Thank you.
I'd like to move from using a land line to a VOIP service over my CenturyLink DSL. I'm afraid the service will suck. How can I evaluate this before committing to porting my phone number? [more inside]
I'm in need of a new webhost, and I need the following: SSH/SFTP, PHP support, ability to run background processes (namely the Unix version of Dropbox), webmail forwarding, and monthly payments. I don't need much space (1 GB would likely be plenty) or bandwidth (1 GB/mo? maybe?), and the Dropbox process is literally the only thing I would have running. What's my best, cheapest option? Thanks!
One of my computers connects to the Internet just fine using the wireless router but the other computer only intermittently connects with more than 1 or 2 mbps. This computer connects normally when I connect using an ethernet cable. [more inside]
I'm looking for a web service that is a little bit of Pinterest, Evernote, and Google Reader. Does this service exist? [more inside]
I'm trying to steer myself toward some daily routines beyond just human maintenance and sustenance. I don't have any ultimate goals to achieve, it's more about daily practice and keeping myself focused on "keepin' on keepin' on" in a few areas that are important to me but that I tend to neglect. I can't find quite what I'm looking for with Google. I can best describe what I want by describing how I would do it on paper: (1)Create a question form with a list of questions and some space to respond essay-style to each question. (For myself the questions would be something like "How was your meditation today?" "What new thing did you create today?" "What artist did you read about today?") (2)Photocopy this form 100 times or so. (3)Fill out one form each day. Is there a free site where I can do this online, or should I just create it on paper with some photocopies in a three-ring binder?
I've been doing research involving the treatment of musicians under repressive regimes. A while back I found a graph that had a list of countries, and for each country listed the number of musicians killed, tortured, abducted, assaulted etc. in a certain period of time. But I've lost this graph!! Can you help me relocate it? [more inside]
Four days ago, my Comcast cable internet service began slowing down in the evenings. I know this is normal behavior for cable service, since bandwidth is shared within communities. However, my usual 25 Mbps has slowed to somewhere between 1 and 4 Mbps after 5 PM, with the occasional 20 (very rare). I've seen it as low as 300 Kbps. I checked last night at 2 AM and it was clocking in at 50, which is what I pay for. What can I do? [more inside]
After an internet outage (now resolved) Comcast customer service recommended that we update our 8 year old cable modem (Thompson DCM-425) to a new wireless router/modem combo. I'm trying to figure out if this will really be an upgrade or more of a "well the wireless would be faster, if it were still working" sort of situation? [more inside]

In my office at work, I have no FM radio reception, no cellular phone reception, and only have https internet access. Are there any internet music streaming sites using SSL? Or any podcasts I could download at home and bring to work? [more inside]
Ok, theoretically simple question that I can't find a simple answer to: I'm currently a Comcast customer subscribed to low-tier tv and internet. I'd like to drop my tv service and replace it with an antenna for OTA channels and a higher internet tier for streaming and general internet'ing (Comcast is my only real internet option, so I won't be dropping them entirely). I need advice as to how to get the best possible rate for the internet service. Details below the fold. [more inside]

I'm interested in joining the UK personal genome project (PGP), as I like big science and think that the project looks interesting and has some admirable aims. However, I'm not so sure about having my genetic information freely available on the internet, and I don't fully understand what the risks of this could be. I found this article on the gurdian, but any more information, resources or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
There is a domain that would be nice to have, but it has been registered for a very long time. I just recently decided to check on it, and it seems to be expiring. The site now shows a GoDaddy landing page that says it expired around a month ago. So, would it be advantageous to use their auction site, since they seem to currently have some control over the domain? [more inside]
A couple of days ago I clicked a legit-looking result from a Google search and got to a page of hackery-looking type saying that my system now belonged to somebody else. I backed away fast, but tried it again out of curiosity and the same thing happened. I didn't cap the screen and now I can't find the page, but can somebody hijack my computer (Mac running Safari this week for some reason) just because I clicked a link? This might be a laughable question, but since this has never happened to me before I don't know how seriously to take it!
Am I likely to get a virus on a laptop that hasn't been updated for a year, while I wait for new updates? [more inside]
Lately I've been feeling pretty isolated because none of my friends really share my views on civil rights or social justice. The people I know who are more progressive are really militant and extreme and they're not very helpful to be around either due to their rather harsh approach to their various causes. Where on the internet and in real life can I as a white girl go to be part of a community that is proactive and progressive towards intersectionality, feminism, LGBTQ rights, and similar topics? I listen a lot to Radio Paradise for a nice general music radio station but since I stopped driving I've been missing the trashy top 20 radio. Of course I could stream one of those stations on the computer, but listening to that many adds would seem silly. Pandora is fine, but it tends to be too limited in its scope. So does anyone know a good, human curated radio station that mixes in all of the new pop music?
Is one of the streaming services really great for a radio-like experience, with randomized and/or curated playlists? I don't want to have to build playlists myself -- it takes forever, and I can just do that in iTunes if I want (and in fact I have done that for years, but am sick of it). I would like to be able to pick a genre, mood or event, and have it be able to play songs for many hours. The ones I've tried so far have fallen short. [more inside]
Metafilter is an interesting community in that it is open to anyone to join, but it is semi-walled in that you have to pay $5 before you are allowed to post. I'm very interested in observing how various communities operate and I was wondering if there were any other notable (reasonable active) communities that have a similar "semi-walled" model. What I mean is that there is some kind of restriction on joining (like Metafilter's $5 payment or submitting an application), but anyone can apply. [more inside]
I am reminded of Google retiring GReader... the way that it changed my online life and the uproar that came along with it. Except this time there is no uproar or teams of companies try to market their competitive offerings to me. Where do I go now? [more inside]

Are there any good resources for helping a low-income senior get Internet access? [more inside]
It's fund drive time, and I have been a contributor and a host promoting fund drives for public and community radio. But a common complaint I hear from people is public radio encourages them to do their part, meaning contribute. The promise is the sooner you do, the sooner the drive will end. [more inside]
I want to be able to treat my android wifi hotspot like a router and moderate the content that I can access through it. Is there something like a hosts file I can use? I want to block distracting websites. [more inside]
I have a few days off following the holiday crazies and I'm planning a mini road-trip to escape for these few days to unwind, hide from life and work on some personal projects. I really don't care where I go, but I'm looking for 4 things: an awesome private jacuzzi tub, a solid internet connection, and a walkable location -- all within 6 hours drive of Vancouver. I want to use a Google Hangout "On Air" for a project, but a tiny limitation is getting in the way. I would like to bypass the 'Press to Talk' functionality with a tiny browser script/hack/modification. I'm slightly obsessed with well-put-together science-y treatments like those done by XKCD's "What If" and ASAPScience. Given this obsession, where are other places I might be able to get my fix? :) (Note: Video is fun, but I'm not opposed to reading, either!) [more inside]

This is making me crazy, but google is failing me: Isn't there some ancient list of "why no one is replying to your internet/forum/list post"? Stuff like, "nothing more needs to be said," or "something else." It's only like 3-5 items, and I think it's a classic, but I can't seem to dig it up.

The website for my college newspaper is undergoing a bit of an overhaul and we were looking for a good WordPress theme to replace our current one. It should be simple, with a header image, something to feature a "front page" story as well as categorical images for sports, campus events, etc.
Hey all, I'm looking for some listenable eclectic international music radio stations. I'm a rock/indie lover, but get bored listening exclusively to it like on BBC Radio 6 or Radio Paradise. As a follow up to this, my son is flying to Dublin tomorrow from the US, attending DCU. He's got an apartment lined up but will need to get Internet service for it and a SIM card for his iPhone 4S shortly after he arrives. He'll be there for about a year. We're looking for specific recommendations for Internet service and mobile providers, and where/how to sign up! [more inside]
I have an ATV2. It asks me to turn on home sharing. I do. ATV insists that i turn on home sharing. It worked in my previous location excepting a few times, where I just unplugged the router and ATV and replugged back in. It worked here on initial setup the first try but a few days later this whole stuff happens. It worked again only after I did a complete factory reset. I have read many of the threads online and perhaps it is a bit of daftness on my part. This previous thread on mefi helped the gentleman with his question. I didn't actually understand it very well. I have an iMac running Snow Leopard. The ATV does connect to Netflix and all other things. Just not my computer. [more inside]
