I love world music! I'm looking for a stand-alone (no computer) wireless internet-radio music player, but get exasperated with wonky interface/station recall/ menu systems on the ones I've seen. Any suggestions? I need two: one for a gift in the US, one for me (european outlet). Also, speaker recommendations for streaming from a laptop welcome! [more inside]

I'm seeing a trend emerge, but I can't quite put my finger on how to identify it. Does it already have a name? If not, help me come up with one (for an article I'm writing). The article's jumping off point is RapGenius's foray into annotating everything
not just lyrics, the NYTimes' Quips
tool, Medium.com's paragraph-level commenting/annotation system
, and Findings.com. [more inside]

Are there options to add internet to a place that isn't wired for cable/broadband and doesn't have a phone line?
The marina where I keep my sailboat does not have cable or telephone lines installed at the docks. I want to be able to use the internet while I am staying on my boat. Are there technology options available so that I can make this happen? What is the general connectivity speed of those options?

triggered the largest Geomagnetic Storm in recorded history, crippling the relatively small-scale telecommunications systems of the day and causing widespread electro-magnetic disruptions around the globe. Why are old, black&white films (seemingly) always presented sped up to a modern framerate, making them jerky and fast? The explanation I have of that is that they were recorded with a slower frame rate, so if you want to play it on a modern TV, you have to speed it up. But can't we do better than that now? I've been asked to research the viability of the launch of a new top-level domain (TLD) parallel to dot-com. Assuming the prospective domain owner wishes not to reduplicate the internet as it exists now merely with another extension, I'd like to ask: Let's say you could take what you know about how the internet works (indexing, monetization, traffic, web-mastering but also crowdsourcing, social networking, political organizing, personal publishing, microfunding, etc.) and for reasons purely fictional, the existing system was scrapped and being re-built from scratch, what would you do with that opportunity if you had it? I am looking to do a project on the effects of latency on cloud computing, specifically latency impacting on Amazon EC2 virtual machines and I am trying to get my head around it. EC2 is an Infrastructure As A Service cloud product. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with it.
I haven't found alot on the internet on this area; has anyone seen any information on this subject?
Could anyone make suggestions about appropriate ways to do latency benchmarking in this area.
What kind of things ought I be looking to include in any benchmark tests.
How exactly do others go about measuring latency for Amazon EC2. Are there any software tools out there which will help.

I am interested in cloud computing and I am looking for recommendations re interesting and worthy articles and papers on the subject of cloud computing.
One area of interest is in how it will change the old-fashioned client-server network model - the status quo.
Is outsourcing the network infrastructure really going to produce a dramatic transformation or is it somewhat over-hyped and exagerated.

I'm looking for a way to place a browser window into a PowerPoint slide so that I can access web pages during my presentation and have them updated in real time.
I've played around a bit with LiveWeb, which has behaved a bit erratically, and am hesitating before plunking down money for something like T-Dog's PowerPoint Web Browser. It doesn't need to have terribly robust browser capabilities - an address bar, forward/backward buttons and a "refresh" button should suffice.
Anyway, I'd love to hear people's advice - the simpler, the better; I am a confirmed non-geek. If it matters (and I assume it does), I'm running Windows XP and PowerPoint 2003.
Thanks in advance for your answers to my first-ever Ask MeFi question!

When I have a question, I ask it. Simple enough, right? Are there any psychological/educational repercussions to having endless access to information? Are we becoming less intelligent because we are not seeking answers for ourselves, and instead relying on the vast database of knowledge on the Internet to answer questions that could be better answered via actual physical reasoning? It seems that I remember there being a "term" for this phenomenon - if it actually exists. Any help? [more inside]

This has been asked before but the answers I need are a bit more specific. I bought my home (1920s bungalow) here in Sacramento 3 years ago, and the previous owners had DSL - in fact the DSL port in the house is exactly where I need/want my broadband connection to be. So - I just got an Airport Express card for my powerbook and a Airport Extreme basestation: do I want DSL or cablemodem? I use satellite for TV, not cable, and am not going to switch any time soon, so bundles are out. I am not going to run a website and need no static IP. Insanely high speed is not necessary, just something a hell of a lot faster than my current 56k. Prices? Service? Will SBC give me a deal on DSL since the install is already in place?
