I am trying to access my home Mac remotely from the office (I use RealVNC). Unfortunately, there was an Internet outage, which is restored, but the Mac is no longer connected to the Internet. It is however connected to the router, which is accessible from the Internet. AFAIK the only way I can get the Mac reconnected is to reboot it. Is there any way I can reboot the Mac via the router? Or is there some other way to restore the Internet connection to the Mac remotely? I am pretty ignorant on these matters. Thanks for your help.

I'm looking for a way to extend home WiFi into an adjoining building, where laying cable is not an option and packaging/LOS is a concern. I'd also like to reduce equipment cost, while not compromising endpoint throughput. Specific details inside. [more inside]

I have a friend who has become totally reliant on an e-mail account, which was provided by an internet service provider which she has just left to go to a new ISP. She uses Outlook 2003 as her e-mail client program. Unfortunately, she is now finding that after moving to this new ISP that although she can receive e-mails absolutely fine, she cannot send e-mails. I'm going absolutely crazy here! I previously had a 2Wire DSL modem set to bridge mode with the Linksys router handling PPPoE auth. I recently moved and I'm trying to do the same thing with a new Motorola 3347 (Netopia 3000) and I can't get it to work to save my life. [more inside]

I'm looking for a forum where I can ask questions about networking, security, coding, operating systems, web design, etc. There are many
of these out there, but I'd like to find a single
community which covers all these topics more or less equally (so it isn't a Linux forum with a small section on BSD, or a coding forum with a small section on networking). I'd like it to be the sort of forum where users stay around for several years as they learn and contribute at different levels, with high literacy and education-to-spam levels. Could I have your recommendations please?

I am looking to do a project on the effects of latency on cloud computing, specifically latency impacting on Amazon EC2 virtual machines and I am trying to get my head around it. EC2 is an Infrastructure As A Service cloud product. Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with it.
I haven't found alot on the internet on this area; has anyone seen any information on this subject?
Could anyone make suggestions about appropriate ways to do latency benchmarking in this area.
What kind of things ought I be looking to include in any benchmark tests.
How exactly do others go about measuring latency for Amazon EC2. Are there any software tools out there which will help.

: Besides MetaFilter, whats the must read of the day? Tired of perusing the usual suspects for cool things on the internet. As I grow older find myself a bit less enthused over reddit, fark, digg, etc.
As we all know, Metafilter is the holy grail of knowledge and all things fantastic, but I find myself wondering if there are a couple of pit stops missing before arriving here that will make my internet time better. Thinking along the lines of science, art, sociology, psychology, music and more. Any and all suggestions much appreciated.

I'm setting up a wireless network in my house and am having a problem getting my XP laptop and my roommates Vista laptop on at the same time.
I can get one or the other accessing the internet (when right clicking on network and repairing). I'm assuming this is an IP conflict since when I get her Vista laptop accessing the net, a yellow triangle with an exclamtion mark pops up in my task bar and then my laptop won't access the net.
My guess is I have to set up a static IP for both?
