My DSL internet connection went kaput on Thursday. I rebooted my modem with the help of my ISP and all was well for a few hours. I figured it was my ancient modem that finally died. So, I pick up a new modem and plug it in and nothing happens. All the lights light up, my ipod touch and laptop see my wireless network but there's connection. I plug directly into the modem via ethernet cable and still nothing.

My grandma lives in Las Vegas and got her hands on a MacBook Pro, but doesn't have a cell phone, digital cable, or any kind of Internet access. She lives on a very small Social Security payment, but wants to access the web to see her grandkids. What's the most affordable, simplest option currently available for cheap wireless broadband in Vegas (Zip code 89121) with a USB modem?

My modem: every day I must kill the power, wait a few minutes, then power it back up in order to have any decent speed at all. Without this crude fix, I'm getting around 400 Kbps. Once I reboot it, however, I can manage a decent 4.0 Mbps. I've bypassed the router, tried different computers, and the issue persists. (Oh, and I don't have any kind of per-day download limit that's throttling me.) I'd rather try to correct the problem myself before spending endless hours on the phone with my ISP's tech support. Any idea what's going on here?

I currently have a finicky DSL connection. Is there a utility that will give me near-instantaneous status (like a green light/red light on the task bar) on whether I truly have an Internet connection? I use Windows 7.

I currently use AT&T as our broadband ISP at home. Our five-year-old modem/router just died, and since it's so old, AT&T tells me that it's no longer under warranty, and I have to buy a new one myself. Then they directed me to an AT&T Wireless retail store to go buy the equipment. But can they force me to buy one of their routers? What if I can find a comparable one cheaper somewhere else? Can they refuse me customer service or deny me installation help (which I will need - I'm hopelessly n00bulous in this department) if I don't by an "official" AT&T router?

One internet connection shared between three computers. One jackass who uses the entire download limit(!!) and gets our speed capped(!!). So, what software or hardware solutions might there be??
Secrecy isn't a concern. That they are too stupid to be trusted is. Is there maybe something that monitors where the data is going? And also a way to hobble their line speed, once they've reached their 'share'. (I'd prefer not to just yank their cable out completely, but whatever.) I have no idea (keywords to google??) so I'm completely open to suggestion on this :) Thanks!

My DSL modem is fried and out of warrantee.
SNET SBC AT&T wants $100 for me to buy a new one, or they'll give me a free one if I sign a new contract. I'll likely be moving in three months, and a hundred dollars is pretty pricey when I can find used ones on eBay for less than twenty. I'm pretty technical, but the problem is that I don't know G.DMT, G.Lite, or T1.413 from a hole in the ground. What requirements should I look for in a DSL modem to be sure that it's compatible? (I'm in Connecticut.)

TiVoInternetConnectionFilter: Help me troubleshoot my internet connection's disconnections. For some reason when my computer is plugged into the router (which is plugged into the cable modem) the internet connection drops every 30-45 minutes. When it is wired directly into the modem, all is well. My TiVo connects wirelessly to the router. Is my favorite TV accessory causing my internet woes, and how do I fix it?

I'm considering buying a DSL modem outright, to take care of that pesky rental charge each month from my ISP. Does the make and brand of modem make much of a difference in terms of reliability and speed, or are the ISP and phone lines in between more of a determining factor?
