My ISP is now telling me if I don't call them about getting an upgrade ASAP, they will "temporarily interrupt my service." I don't want one but think they are going to force me into it. [more inside]

I'm considering buying a house in rural Vermont where cable and dsl internet are not available, and mobile phone service is spotty. It seems the only option would be satellite internet through a provider such as HughesNet. Would this be a huge mistake? [more inside]

Ok, theoretically simple question that I can't find a simple answer to: I'm currently a Comcast customer subscribed to low-tier tv and internet. I'd like to drop my tv service and replace it with an antenna for OTA channels and a higher internet tier for streaming and general internet'ing (Comcast is my only real internet option, so I won't be dropping them entirely). I need advice as to how to get the best possible rate for the internet service. Details below the fold. [more inside]
Which Canadian company (or companies) would you recommend as a reliable and affordable organization to host my e-mail? [more inside]
Does anyone have an internet/cable provider in this area that's not Comcast? We are fed up with their horrible service. We're in Northampton, MA if it helps.
Why would my ISP routing Google traffic differently? What is traffic-shaping, and why is it considered "questionable" for an ISP to do this? I'm on Vancouver Island, in Canada. My ISP is Shaw, and everyone on Shaw on Vancouver Island experienced some issues with Google domains including YouTube and G+ for most of the day. Here's a thread where users are discussing the problem. In the thread I linked above, some folks are saying that there must have been either a critical failure, or "they're traffic-shaping or otherwise filtering results from Google-based websites. That's highly questionable behaviour." What does this mean? While I had internet connectivity, I couldn't access Gmail or Google Search, and ended up using my Telus phone's WiFi hotspot to work (we all work remotely and use Google Apps).
I'm a professional poker player and internet disconnects cost me money. Each disconnect averages around 5 dollars, but obviously if it disconnects at the wrong time it could cost me thousands. I want a very reliable internet, (I've heard there are some that guarantee 99.x% uptime for business usually) But I think those are super expensive ($1,000/month), so please also give some common ISPS
Any high-tech work-from-home Maui residents? If you work from home on Maui and absolutely definitely depend on having rock-solid high-speed internet access... where do you live and where would you avoid moving? Is there a single company that offers access? Related question... are power-outages a regular occurrence that would affect location too? mahalo.
I have a friend who has become totally reliant on an e-mail account, which was provided by an internet service provider which she has just left to go to a new ISP. She uses Outlook 2003 as her e-mail client program. Unfortunately, she is now finding that after moving to this new ISP that although she can receive e-mails absolutely fine, she cannot send e-mails. [Italy filter] There are many enticing offers in Italy nowadays for internet accounts including "free" (in the sense of "included in the price") phonecalls, etc., all of them looking quite a lot cheaper than my present contract (Alice from Telecom Italia). I wish I could troubleshoot my home internet service and wireless network when they're acting funny. I'm computer-literate but I only have the vaguest sense of how networks do what they do, I don't mind reading technical stuff, and I'd like to end up with a useful set of intuitions about how the damn thing works. What should I read?

I am looking for a depository of old AOL/Compuserve/Prodigy screenshots, ideally from 1993-1998. Even better -- I'd love to find & run these actual programs on a modern computer. Where can I get screenshots, and where can I find the old versions of these programs/a way to run them?
I currently use AT&T as our broadband ISP at home. Our five-year-old modem/router just died, and since it's so old, AT&T tells me that it's no longer under warranty, and I have to buy a new one myself. Then they directed me to an AT&T Wireless retail store to go buy the equipment. But can they force me to buy one of their routers? What if I can find a comparable one cheaper somewhere else? Can they refuse me customer service or deny me installation help (which I will need - I'm hopelessly n00bulous in this department) if I don't by an "official" AT&T router? [more inside]

I currently live in San Francisco where I use WebPass, which I adore. It's by far the best ISP I've ever had: cheap, lightning-fast, and impeccable customer service. What is the best way to get unlimited net access in Croatia without per minute data charges? We're going to Croatia for a few weeks and will need reliable net access for VPNing back home. I'm fine with paying a bit extra for a temporary DSL/Cable install - we will be staying in a home so mobile access is not necessary. Something faster than 56k modem speed would be preferred.
