Mr. BlahLaLa and I are considering buying Kid BlahLaLa a laptop for his 10th birthday. (We want him to be able to play Minecraft and browse the internet.) We're a Mac family but I'm pretty sure this computer will have to be non-Mac because they're so much cheaper, which in turn opens up a whole world of internet security questions that I usually don't think about on my mac. Plus the whole idea of "Now I'm giving my kid a computer, what do I need to think about?" type of stuff.

Some web content, like Tumblr and the videos on Netflix appear in greyscale, with vertical lines all over them, and smushed into the left side of the screen. If I want to click on something, I need to click on the place it would normally be, rather than where it appears on the tiny, greyscale screen. I don't think it's my browser, because it happens on both Safari and IE (I know, I know, but I can't watch Netflix on Safari). I couldn't find an answer on Google. Thanks in advance!

What are the earliest examples of Internet-based art? Are they still online? Do they date all the way back to the 1960s when the Internet was founded? Are there earlier examples of computer-based art from before the advent of the Internet?

I'm looking for 'Folk' Web Cultures. I am thinking of the recent take-down of Geocities, which seemed to refresh people's love of the naff, kitsch aesthetic it was famous for, as a prime example. What are some other folk cultures still lingering in the dark corners of the web?

I've been asked to research the viability of the launch of a new top-level domain (TLD) parallel to dot-com. Assuming the prospective domain owner wishes not to reduplicate the internet as it exists now merely with another extension, I'd like to ask: Let's say you could take what you know about how the internet works (indexing, monetization, traffic, web-mastering but also crowdsourcing, social networking, political organizing, personal publishing, microfunding, etc.) and for reasons purely fictional, the existing system was scrapped and being re-built from scratch, what would you do with that opportunity if you had it?
