What's the right software to maintain and display a calendar of relatively infrequent future events, as well as blog-like news postings? I maintain a website for specialists in my field of mathematics, and one section consists of announcements for upcoming and recent conferences. Another is for news announcements: a basic blog-style list of entries. Both are currently run by our 7-year-old Movable Type installation, in combination with a good bit of chewing gum and baling twine. I'd like to redesign the whole schmear, including the back end. Is wordpress (plus more gum and twine) the right solution? Is there some other system that makes more sense? [more inside]

I'm going crazy trying to adjust my blog template. It seems that when I change the browser window size, the body, sidebar, and header all move independently. If I make the window wider, the right edges of the sidebar and header do not align. If I make the window less wide, the whole sidebar crunches into body text (fine) and eventually gets kicked off the side by the body (not fine). Ideally, I'd like them all to line up, move/scale together side-to-side, and not get kicked around. [more inside]

I have been using reblog to combine two feeds (for a blog and a forum) which I then publish through Feedburner. Put forward to action by this catty thread but with different reasons and intentions, does anyone have recommendations for excellent Metafilter-like sites or even personal weblogs...in German? I have very high fluency in German, subscribe to a few of the default German weblogs in NetNewsWire lite, but blogging culture in the hunosphere (I kid, I kid) just doesn't seem to have much presence. Maybe because everyone can speak English? I'd like to keep up my German with one of my favorite time-wasters while living outside of a German-speaking country. Anyway, almost all input welcome!

So I've finally switched isps, and have moved my blog to the new address...Is there any easy way to let everyone who has me on their bookmark list know? I don't know who or how many have me linked, for the most part. (Google shows my message about moving as the first link for "amberglow" so maybe i should just let everyone find me? The old blog url is dead already.) I'd been using sitemeter and can email each referrer individually but that's a pain, and won't catch everyone. Any suggestions?
