Is there any cheap neutral-colored wallpaper that I could use that's temporary? Or anything else that I can cover it with that I can take down later? I just can't do a pink room, man. [more inside]

One of the most common recommendations for insomniacs is to not use a bedroom for anything but sleeping (and sex, though I suspect that's a compromise to reality). And that's helped a lot. I am clueless about interior design. I see lots of things I like-- but I have no idea how to get my apartment from here to there. It may require renovation. I definitely need artwork. And shelves. Lots of shelves. So, I'm wondering how much would a consultation with an interior designer cost in Manhattan and does anyone have any recommendations and how do I choose one?

I am looking for books and/or magazines with lots of photos of pre-20th Century living spaces. Why, you ask? Because I'm trying to paint the walls of my 115 year-old brownstone apartment in a color that (1) I like and (2) complements the architecture.
