I need to demonstrate our married status to an insurance company, sooner rather than later. Can't find our marriage license; I ordered a copy from the issuing authority, but it will take a couple of weeks. The insurance company says 'Send any other documents that show you're married,' and they'll make a decision based on those. I'm thinking IRS correspondence, mortgage papers, old insurance policy ... any other ideas?
Looking for someone who's had this experience to tell me the end of your story: you injured yourself (through personal clumsiness) while at a friend's house, your health insurance paid for your ER visit. Your insurance company asks you "where did this accident occur?" and you reply... something... in the hopes that neither your friend nor your friend's property insurance is held liable. [more inside]

Wondering if you could help with a risk-benefit analysis of lowering the amount of insurance on my car. I still owe money on it, but I could potentially pay it off and then save money on my insurance. BUT is the insurance good to have anyway? [more inside]
If someone is a 65+ recent green card holder with only 3 years work experience in the US and who hasn't lived continuously in the US for 5 years (but has visited every year for several months for a decade), they don't qualify for free or even paid Medicare. What is the best health insurance plan for them if they spend 5-7 months in the US, and the rest in their home country in Asia? Are they best off with an Obamacare plan, or some kind of special immigrant health insurance, or what? Thanks.
Let's assume that you caused one fire due to negligence in your home, and then less than five years later you caused another fire due to negligence at the business you own? How would your insurance companies treat/investigate this? Let's also assume this is the second time around for the liability company.
I just got fired. I was miserable and stressed and planned to have a talk with the CEO on Monday. Instead, he fired me today. I'm in California. What rights, if any, do I have? [more inside]

None of this is legal advice. Got it. I'm trying to determine whether legal advice is even worth pursuing. Our house was damaged by a water leakage incident which the homeowner's insurance agreed to fully cover to the tune of about 60K. We were not living in the house at the time, which was actually up for sale. More excitement below the fold! [more inside]
I am going to have a health insurance gap between October 31 and December 23rd. That is a time period less than 60 days, and I hear there is a COBRA loophole, and I would like advice about it. [more inside]
I really like this chandelier. Buy-able versions I have found are way out of my budget, but the designer posted instructions for a similar DIY version. I live in a rented apartment in NYC - are there legal/insurance/safety issues I need to be concerned about? [more inside]
My dear friend is resigning from her job in the near future. She will move to another state in 2-3 months and plans to go without health insurance until she can find a job there. Is this as bad an idea as I think? How can I help? [more inside]
I have two one year old dogs. They are in great health, but I worry about the future. I am not in the position to pay a huge vet bill for an emergency (more than $1000), but would want to do everything to keep my pets healthy and alive. [more inside]
My anxiety has flared up recently, to the point where I am reluctant to leave my house unless absolutely necessary. This weekend, I checked myself into urgent care after having five panic attacks in 12 hours. The health care providers there were less than helpful, and I feel like I've hit a wall in terms of figuring out how to get the help that I need. [more inside]

Anyone have recommendations on a house inspector/inspection company in Phoenix? Currently the house we are buying has had a "relocation property inspection" done by a relocation company (seller is moving away and his company is relocating him along with providing this report). I think we probably need to get a full inspection done, but would like some referrals if anyone has any. Or anyone have any opinions on if another inspection should be necessary? My relator says his inspection guy is $375 and said that in this situation, it maybe worth it to just save the $375 but it was up to me. Thanks!
Apparently my payroll hasn't been deducting my spouse's insurance premium from my paycheck since when my insurance kicked in starting in April. I didn't realize this in the flurry of deductions and taxes from my paycheck. When I started, I asked my boss what the insurance benefit is at my work. She said it was 100% covered for me by the company but that I was in charge for paying for my spouse, which I'm totally fine with but thought it would automatically come out of my paycheck. My unmarried partner and I live in Queens. He had a car when we moved in together, and the title, registration, and insurance have always been entirely in his name - I didn't even drive it. The car died this summer and we are looking to buy a used car free and clear from a friend, so car payments are thankfully not an issue. I have been thinking that maybe I should consider being more involved with the car, but I am utterly clueless about the most basic details, and don't know where to start. [more inside]
Last week a condo unit above mine had an accidental flood. The water damaged about nine units including mine. As a resident in Ontario, how do I reclaim my expenses for the damage he caused. [more inside]
This is hypothetical. I have allowed somebody to drive my car (in British Columbia, Canada) who I know does not have valid driver's license. She has a crash in which somebody else is badly hurt. She (the uninsured driver) does not have the money to pay the damages. How liable am I for these damages, and will my ICBC insurance cover them? If my insurance doesn't cover these damages and they are extreme, are all my assets endangered? (ie: worst case scenario, could I lose my home?)

I'm a relentless optimizer and usually do tons of research before making decisions, but I am shuddering at the thought of wading through endless legal and sales verbiage on insurance sites, or even worse, of enduring verbal sales pitches from agents/brokers. Husband needs open heart surgery. Our preferred surgeon is not on our healthcare plan. We're going to request a benefit exception. We are in Washington state. We are on an individual plan, not with an employer. I called the insurer and requested a case worker. Any suggestions on my approach? Feeling overwhelmed already. [more inside]
I got clocked speeding in an area of Montreal with an 18 mph speed limit (that I didn't know about). I got a ticket and was sent on my way. As a US citizen and resident, I have questions about what impact (if any) this ticket will have on my license, insurance, and--if I choose not to pay the ticket--my ability to return to Canada. (Note: I am not seriously considering ignoring the ticket, I'm just curious.) [more inside]
I've been taking Adderall XR for about a half a year, and it has made a tremendous difference in my life. The med, however, was recently put on the Prior Authorization list - which means that I now need to receive approval from my insurance before they cover it. My doc submitted an application, which I just found out was denied on the grounds that I don't have sufficient documentation of ADD. I took a test with my doc, and was denied again. What exactly do they want from me? [more inside]
I came home after work today and noticed that my mailbox is tilted. Then at around 6 PM, one of my neighbors came over and told me that she witnessed a car backing up and hit my mailbox and then drove off. She was able to write down the license plate number of the vehicle for me. I'm not sure on what to do now. It's an old mail box that I've own for about 10 years and I do not mind replacing it. So I don't know if I should just go buy a new mailbox and let this incidence go. I'm a bit bothered by the fact that the driver drove off and did not accept responsibility. How should I go about handling this situation? Thanks for the suggestion!

A large tree across the street fell on my car while I was sleeping and did a fair amount of damage. After getting two repair estimates as requested, the town's insurance company decided they have no responsibility as they didn't have prior knowledge of any problems with the tree. Child Clarkstonian, who is an adult, bought a car. Said child doesn't make enough to satisfy the insurance company. They are making onerous requests. Said child needs good insurance, because our name is on the lien (first car, needed co-signers, child is paying for the car). [more inside]
If all goes well, I'll have the pre-purchase inspection on this used car tomorrow, and see if I can close a deal to buy it. Then what? I need help with the order of all the paperwork and steps. Complication: I'm in MA, the owner is in CA, and the car is registered and located with the seller's relative in NH. [more inside]

How common is it for American workers to deliberately get fired in order to collect on unemployment insurance?
I was in a fender-bender that was indisputably the other driver's fault, but I'm not sure how to proceed with the insurance claim because there was already some mild prior damage to my car from a couple of scrapes in my house's treacherous driveway that I never brought to my insurer's attention. Can I get in trouble with my insurance company (USAA) for failing to report those minor solo collisions, and how much will it complicate a claim against the at-fault driver's insurance? [more inside]
I recently received my renewal notice in the mail for my auto insurance policy. The premium (for the entire year) increased by almost $100. I called my insurance company to find out why, and my BS detector is going off. [more inside]
My husband got doored on his bike. There was a police report, the guy who hit him stayed on the scene and was actually on the job (delivery) when he opened his door into my husband, who was in the bike lane. How to get our unemployed and non-insured neighbors to pay for car damage? Our downstairs neighbors (we split a house) are borrowing an (uninsured) car from their friend over the summer. After getting super drunk early Mon, they somehow barrelled out of the garage, hitting our car and (we think) another car parked in the street. They didn't confess to hitting our car until we approached them with evidence and long after I had already filed a hit-and-run report.... [more inside]
I've long been with AT&T simply because it worked well and the cost of moving was a deterrent. After (naively) getting insurance after a stolen phone a few months ago, by latest phone was water damaged. Considering I've gone 10+ years without losing or missing a phone I never needed it insured. At the store, without looking at the contract I was told the deductible was $50, instead it is actually $200. This is enough to make me leave and pay a fee. Considering I like my iPhone and don't want to switch what's my best option (usage details within). [more inside]

I need a jaw surgery and I haven't had any insurance for the past year. I was thinking of paying for individual private insurance, but I've never had to get surgery before so I don't know if there will be restrictions to my getting surgery right after signing on to a policy. What would you recommend and what kind of insurance should I get? I'm generally a healthy person so I barely ever used my insurance back when I had it. I really don't know anything about this stuff.
