I just got a check for $10k. Can I keep it? YANAL.

A year ago, I was involved in a car accident that was not my fault. Now, in exchange for being released from any future liability for injuries relating to the accident, the other person's car insurance has issued a check directly to me. For $10k. This feels too good to be true--is it? [more inside]

Seeing two physical therapists at once - is it OK?

I've been seeing a PT for 3 months who is covered entirely by insurance. They provide ultrasound, etc., but not much else. I want to see another PT to get better treatment and pay out of pocket. Would it be OK to continue seeing the insurance-covered PT for ultrasound and e-stem once a week and pay out of pocket to go to the other PT once a week? Would my insurance company frown on this if they found out?

Help me find a cheap health insurance plan I can get online

I am getting health insurance just to meet the minimum coverage for something I'm doing that requires health insurance. I just want a cheap plan that I can get online. I tried googling but it's overwhelming and I don't know which sites to trust, half of them look like spam/scam to me. Is there a good comparison site?

TMJ and insurance

Asking for a friend: "I have TMJ & I'm looking for new insurance. I've noticed that Health Choice Insurance doesn't exclude TMJ, but you have to be authorized for it. Does anyone have experience with this company, or with a different company who would cover an occlusional splint specifically made for the treatment of TMJ?" [more inside]

Question about Ontario driving records

I would like to buy a used car, drive it all summer (commuting to a short-term job), then sell it. I'm a newish driver, first car, first time getting auto insurance. Recently I got a major traffic ticket, for which I've already requested a trial. It's likely I'll be done with the car before the trial date arrives. How will this pending ticket affect my insurance? Also, I don't know if my infraction is potentially worth demerit points- how would I find that out? [more inside]

Can you have two health insurance companies & plans?

Hi MeFi, So a bit of a weird situation here. I was laid off in 2013 and at the end of that year I applied for Obamacare. It took FOREVER to get the application going since the website was awful so long story short, it's early 2014 and I get a job with full benefits. I completely forget about the application for Obamacare and it's now January 2015 and I received a letter from CeltiCare Health saying 'hi, here's your coverage card. you are now insured with celticare...' So now, technically, I have two coverages? One from my employer and through Celticare? How does this work? Should I call Celticare and let them know I already have insurance? What benefits are there to having two? Legal or not? Thanks for your help!

Covered California: Naturalization Cert/Cert of Citizenship?!

I'm trying to apply for health insurance through Covered California, and I've reached the "Household" section of their online form. I'm a naturalized citizen. My understanding is that a passport is perfectly valid proof of citizenship, but unfortunately, once I check the "naturalized" radio box, a section pops up prompting me to enter either my naturalization certificate or my certificate of citizenship — neither of which I have, and acquiring which may cost a good chunk of money and also put me past the open enrollment period. How do I get Covered California to accept my passport? Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Thanks! (An extra complication is that I'm not currently in California, though I could probably get my family to act on my behalf if my physical presence is required somewhere.)

Can I buy health insurance for someone without their cooperation?

I have a sister in law who has no health insurance. She is fiercely independent. I can easily afford to pay for health insurance for her. She is refusing to let me. My concern is, if she had a serious health issue, we would be on the hook for paying for her treatment. Not legally, but she is family and we just would pay for her to get good treatment. I want to insure myself against this potentially huge expense even if she doesn't want to. Is there any way to do this?

Contemptible insurance reimbursement for out-of-network psychotherapy.

The BlueCross BlueShield plan I've had for a few years "allows" only $78 of the $180 that my out-of-network therapist charges. Other companies can't/won't tell me what their allowed amount would be. Does your plan "allow" more than mine does? I just don't understand how they can say that the "reasonable, usual and customary charge" for a therapy appointment with a Ph.D. therapist is $78, because that's just ridiculous. Am I missing something here? Or is this just the insurance companies being $&%#?!*@.

Home car salvage: "Totalled" old car, liability only insurance.

I was in an accident in a common mid-90s sports car. Summary: Body work, broken front axle. Because of the age and damage, the insurance will likely declare the car "totaled". My insurance will likely have to pay for repairs to the other car involved. I have liability only insurance, so they're not going to pay me anything regardless. No one was injured. Does my insurance need to care about my car, if it is liability only insurance, besides assessing for "fault"? One of my family members would like to repair the car. Assuming (he has done this kind of thing before, parts are plentiful, and time is not an issue) that he can make it safely drivable again, what do I need to do to make it legally drivable again? Is there anything I can do now to make it easier to get the car on the road in the future? I'm in northern Virginia.
