Where is Flo when I need her cheery optimism???

I'm in the open enrollment period (also newly married) and am considering switching health insurance -- for the first time ever. I understand the fill-out-the-forms part, but I can't wrap my head around what that means logistically. What's the process? What should I look out for? [more inside]

Pre-existing condition technicality

My wife just purchased health insurance for herself. Today is her first day of coverage. She has been experiencing back pain and nerve pain in her leg for the better part of a week, however. If she goes to the doctor today and they send her for an MRI (which we're certain they will) and subsequently decide to do surgery (we think she has a slipped/bulging/herniated disc) is there a chance the claims processor at the insurance company will question paying for any of these services? Help Appaising a Lost Ring

My 75 year-old dad's house was robbed and several pieces of jewelry were taken including his dad's old ring. He's trying to claim insurance on it but they won't pay unless they can see a picture of something like it. My dad doesn't have a picture of the ring, or a computer to look up something similar. I don't live in the area. How can I help him remotely or guide him to someplace in the San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles area where he might be able to find a ring of similar value.

What to do about a "fender bender" in MA?

In Massachusetts: Yesterday on my way to work, going about five miles per hour in morning traffic, I bumped the car in front of me. (My fault; I was totally distracted by the kid waiting for a school bus who looked like he was about to run into the middle of the street.) We pulled off to the side of the road and I took a look at the "damage" -- a couple of scratches to the paint on the (plastic) bumper.... [more inside]

Sketchy business practice, or insurance S.O.P.?

Sketchy-business-practice-filter: Recently got a letter from our insurance agent (car and home) saying, effectively, "We've reviewed your coverage, and according to some system we have (360 Value), the replacement cost of your house is roughly 30% more than what the current policy covers. What recourse, if any, do I have in dealing with this equipment charge from my podiatrist?

About six weeks ago I went to a podiatrist for heel pain and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I was given instructions for treatment along with a night splint that I've been wearing every night. Today, I received a bill from the podiatrist's office for the splint: Blue Cross has paid $80 of the $280 (!) charge, and the podiatrist's office is now putting me on the hook for the $200 balance. What recourse, if any, do I have in dealing with this charge? [more inside]
