Should I maintain renter's insurance even though I've moved out?

I moved out of my apartment, but am still on the lease, which extends for several months. I have "transferred" my renter's insurance policy to cover property and occurrences at my new apartment. This leaves me uncovered at the old place. Does this matter? [more inside]

Insurance double-dipping?

Our storage unit was broken into, and about $5000 worth of stuff was stolen. We purchased an insurance policy with the unit (it was mandatory), and we also have renters insurance (with our auto insurance company). Can I file with both of them? [more inside]

Who's legally liable for a house fire?

My friend rents a house. The house burned last week. My friend has renter's insurance (probably not enough) and the landlord has homeowner's insurance (only $30k - definitely not enough). The fire inspector just announced that my friend's electric mattress pad shorted and caused the fire. Is the landlord's insurance company going to come after my friend? [more inside]

Renters Insurance for cohabitating couple

My SO and I (unmarried) are combining two apartments into one. We both currently have renters insurance of our own, each from our own car insurance company (not the same company). We are not interested in combining our car insurance under one account. Should we get renters insurance for both of us from one of our car insurance companies, or should we each retain our separate renters insurance that covers "my own stuff"?

Recommendations for renter's insurance carriers? We're in the NYC area and will be shopping around. Quotes are easy enough to get, but we'd feel better going into the fray with info on customer experiences, as well. [more inside]
