In a month or so, I will be buying a used car from a relative in a far away state to bring to New York state (not city). What do I need to do to be in compliance with the law, regarding insurance and registration? I already have a NY state license.
This question is going to reveal my lack of understanding surrounding car registration, inspection, etc... But here we go. I've moved to a different state. Can I get my car inspected here even though I have yet to register it here? [more inside]
My unmarried partner and I live in Queens. He had a car when we moved in together, and the title, registration, and insurance have always been entirely in his name - I didn't even drive it. The car died this summer and we are looking to buy a used car free and clear from a friend, so car payments are thankfully not an issue. I have been thinking that maybe I should consider being more involved with the car, but I am utterly clueless about the most basic details, and don't know where to start. [more inside]
I'm trying to figure out a way to have a car that I own insured and driven primarily by my parents. I can't transfer the title, as there's still a lien and I will be making payments. However, my parents need a car urgently, so I need to get them to a good, insured state with a reliable automobile. Does anyone have experience with this?
Buying a car from my mom in NJ for a token (i.e. far less than blue book) amount. What's the best (cheapest) way to get it legally registered/insured in Chicago, IL. Any pitfalls I should look out for?
Some kind of sketchy questions about the legalities and insurance implications of moving from state to state and not switching car registrations over. [more inside]
The Mrs and I are getting a motorcycle from a kind and generous friend who doesn't want to deal with it anymore, and doesn't want to sell it for parts. It's not currently running, and insurance and registration are both expired. We're not keen to pay for it to be road-legal before the engine can even turn over. How long, if at all, can we wait? Please guide me through several steps for registering a car and related inspections / et cetera, in North Carolina. Bonus points if you can phrase the instructions in the form of a World of Warcraft quest. [more inside]
Bringing a car from British Columbia to California- complicated title transfer situation. [more inside]
I've got a vehicle whose title is in the process of being transferred to me. I've got to do the reregistration by mail from Oregon to California. I've had an offer on the vehicle. The potential purchasers say a bill of sale and them putting the vehicle on their insurance is sufficient to let them drive legally. They also mentioned a temporary registration, which I've never heard of. Is this a bad idea, or a practical one to get the car sold now. [more inside]
I'm trying to register my van in Boston Mass. and the insurance laws are crazy. I have insurance already with my car in Colorado but it won't due in Boston. I really don't want to pay an arm and leg to insure and register this van because I will probably sell it in the next year or so. What is the most inexpensive way to go about this?
We have plenty of Minnesota residents here, right? I just moved to Minnesota a few months ago and am now purchasing a new vehicle (well, used) but need to transport it from Iowa. [more inside]
