Returned a rental car recently, had some damage in a crowded parking garage. Seems like the rental agent was trying to get me not to admit fault, but I was dumb and did so. Can they void my LDW by saying it was "reckless"? I'm worried: only light body damage, but will be hella expensive, plus downtime charges, if I'm on the hook.
YANML. I have been asked to teach a couple classes to Homeschooler's, organized by another mom and taught at the local Community Center. I asked the woman organizing if the Recreation Center will cover liability if a kid gets hurt...trips and falls or whatever. [more inside]
Last month I hit a neighbor's parked car. Since then, I've let the insurance company handle it, but the neighbor has reached out to me several times, and I'm not sure how to respond. Details under the cut. [more inside]
[Asking for a friend] My building had a fire last night, on the floor below mine. I have middling fire damage at baseboard level in both bedrooms, both of which will be uninhabitable until the damage is ripped out and redone. All my windows are broken and glass is everywhere, but aside from the above stuff and the overwhelming odor of smoke and my broken-down front door, there is no other (water or fire or smoke stain) damage to the apartment. This is in NYC, and I have no renter's insurance. [more inside]
I'm a US citizen with a US driver's license, currently living in London. I don't own a car and I don't have car insurance. I'm planning to rent cars on holidays in the UK and elsewhere in Europe a few times this year. How do I do this without buying the typically exorbitant insurance coverage from the rental agencies and not relying on the limited coverage that my US credit card offers? [more inside]
Looking for someone who's had this experience to tell me the end of your story: you injured yourself (through personal clumsiness) while at a friend's house, your health insurance paid for your ER visit. Your insurance company asks you "where did this accident occur?" and you reply... something... in the hopes that neither your friend nor your friend's property insurance is held liable. [more inside]
This is hypothetical. I have allowed somebody to drive my car (in British Columbia, Canada) who I know does not have valid driver's license. She has a crash in which somebody else is badly hurt. She (the uninsured driver) does not have the money to pay the damages. How liable am I for these damages, and will my ICBC insurance cover them? If my insurance doesn't cover these damages and they are extreme, are all my assets endangered? (ie: worst case scenario, could I lose my home?)
My girlfriend (who is from the US) is going to Canada to do a mural in a hotel and they require her to have 3rd party insurance/liability insurance. She is only going to be there for a week and she's only making $1000 for the project so she doesn't want to spend all her money on insurance. Do any of you know of a cheap and quick way to get temporarily insured in Canada? [more inside]
Yesterday, my partner slipped and fell while dropping our kid off at preschool. Every possible option about how to handle this makes me uneasy. You're not my lawyer, but that's okay, because my question is not if I can call I lawyer (or let my insurance company do the same), but whether I want to do that... [more inside]
I have a sudden need for a car for the next several months. An awesome friend has offered to lend me his. What could go wrong? [more inside]
I'm evaluating my insurance coverage, and I'm confused a bit on auto insurance liability. It seems like a typical liability policy is $100k per person for bodily injury. From the tales of medical bills I've heard, it seems like a bad accident could pretty easily cause bills far exceeding that. Even if I increase it to $300k or $500k, if the actual costs are higher than that, it could pretty easily wipe out all my assets. What really happens in accident cases like that? Do they generally just settle for the insurance limits? [more inside]
Seeking insurance broker recommendations for a new family in NYC. Co-op, Auto, and now with progeny, Life. Obviously want a person/office that we can trust, and will look out for our interests in the long haul. We live in Queens, and work in Manhattan. Bonus question: are any brokers fee-based, or do all work on commission-type arrangements?
During a windstorm, a tree fell on our detached garage last night and destroyed it (no cars were in it, but the roof is completely caved in and the walls are buckling). We live adjacent to a public high school, and the tree was/is on the school's property, not ours. I filed a claim with our homeowners insurance already and asked if I should call the town directly or if the insurance folks should do it. The call center person I spoke to recommended that I wait. The claims adjuster is supposed to call "before tomorrow evening." I'm feeling antsy. Should I just go ahead and call the town? Would I be letting myself in for any potential foul-ups in reimbursement (either from insurance or from the town)?

I have some upcoming consulting work (report preparation, technical writing, some systems architecture -- all for work related to a planning grant), and a large research university is handling the contract. In filling out the institution's "supplier information form," they requested information about liability insurance. I don't quite know where to start in following up on this, so I suppose I'm looking for recommendations about affordable options from currently insured independent consultants doing similar work. Where can I get cheap auto liability insurance for an older vehicle? I want the minimum auto insurance required by law in PA, which is liability. We used to have Esurance, which I was happy with, but they seem to only cover cars made since 1981, and our new vehicle is a 1980. I know I can get quotes online, but I'm not sure where to start. Do you know a company with cheap rates that offers just liability coverage on a vehicle that old?
I'm a small freelance business owner, with a new client whose standard contract requires me to carry general liability insurance. Probably not a bad idea, so I could use some tips for what to look for in this type of insurance, and any good carriers. But in the meanwhile, for this specific contract, I'd like to get that clause waived. Has anyone had any success having a clause like this waived, and how did you do it? [more inside]
