I have some medical bills that my late husband apparently accrued in the last months of his life. I've been trying to figure out for what and how to get them covered by his insurance for months now and it appears that it's gone to collections. What should I do? [more inside]
Gave power of attorney for a closing we we're physically present for, got the sale receipt and found that the attorney charged a 3385.00 title insurance fee to his own name. Did we get scammed? [more inside]
We plan on getting pregnant in a year. I have heard about getting short term disability insurance before getting pregnant, which you can then collect after the baby is delivered. Does anyone have any experience in this? Is it worth it? Which plans worked for you?
I was hit by another driver, who sped off and likely won't be caught (no plate). I have coverage for this but it took nearly three weeks for my insurance company to approve the estimate from the shop. The first adjuster assigned to the claim wasn't local to the area and tried to do everything by phone/email and the company wasn't particularly communicative about the process. Is this run-of-the-mill feet-dragging for insurance companies or does mine suck? [more inside]
My partner was hit by a car while biking a little over a month ago (we're in CA). It's looking like the ambulance + er visit is going to be already 1.3x the state minimum. We're already speaking a bit with a lawyer, but I have a number of questions about recovery, responsibility and how to make sure we don't end up ok. [more inside]
Today the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a final rule prohibiting denial of coverage based on gender identity. I am trying to figure out exactly what this means in my situation. [more inside]
I'd love to hear what it's like to be moved from private health insurance to medicaid in Illinois. [more inside]
My NYC townhouse has a garden in the back. The garden has a wall around it, which has been there for decades. Two nearby trees has caused it to bow out of alignment toward my neighbor's garden, though not dramatically so. My neighbor claims in a letter to me that the wall will one day collapse into her garden, and wants us to share the cost of replacing the wall, before that happens, with a fence. She also said that if I don't agree to do this, I better make sure that my insurance covers the possible damage to her property that a collapse could cause. I think my neighbor (who is wealthy) just wants a new fence for aesthetic reasons so it matches other fencing on her property, and that the wall is fine -- and I have some questions for the hive-mind... To the law people out there: I work for a small company that recently signed up with a new health insurance company. For various reasons I declined the coverage, but I am getting bombarded by requests for personal information. Here's the actual latest message that I received after I informed them that I do not wish to participate: Hi C13, For any employees at Small Company to get health insurance, you need to complete your application. All employees must complete an application, regardless of whether accepting or waiving coverage. [more inside]
My car was stolen (from a major suburb in the Boston area). Wondering about next steps. [more inside]
My understanding was that a "qualifying life event" - new job for you or spouse, you or spouse divorce/die, you or spouse give birth to or adopt a child - opened a free open enrollment period for you, spouse, and child, wherein you could do things such as decline insurance from one spouse's plan and both enroll on the other plan, and generally make whatever health insurance changes you wanted to. My HR rep told me that this is not always the case for birth/adoption of a child specifically - more inside. [more inside]
I think my doctor is billing my insurance company for procedures that I did not undergo. Should I do anything about this? [more inside]

Yesterday I was rear ended by a young woman driving a scooter. She apologized and admitted fault. I took her contact information and insurance information, but did not file a police report. I thought the proper thing to do was to call my insurer, tell them what happened, and give them the other driver's insurance information, and I did so. I assumed that I should let them handle the claim. Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Your help would be appreciated. [more inside]
How do I get my spouse on Premera health insurance and drop Apple Health [more inside]
(Asking for a family member). They were rear-ended in someone else's car, as a passenger, in February. The insurance of the driver of the car she was in has told them that claims (for physio etc) need to go through their soon-to-be-ex-spouse's insurance--they separated in September. My family member said that the insurance adjuster used a specific word they can't remember, but that essentially as a married (on paper) person, the spouse's insurance takes precedence. [more inside]

This is not a claims call, but a how are you doing call – as your agent my job is to look after you. I am not getting involved on the claims side of it. I would assume you provided your lawyers info to claims? I don’t have access to that system. I just saw the claim, and was concerned about how you are. It is what we do which is take care of people. If you think this is something you shouldn’t share, then I understand, because I have also been hurt in a accident in the past and know what it is like. My accident ended up paying for my graduate degree. If it was a serious accident, then we should talk about the other protections that you should have in place, such as disability and life insurance. You can’t rely on your employer to take care of you. How do you respond to this email? [more inside]

My wife is turning 65 in a couple of months,, and is receiving a deluge of offers and advertisements for private companies offering drug plans, part D coverage, supplemental coverage, part B coverage, etc, etc, etc, etc. On a daily basis. It's overwhelming. How in the hell is anyone supposed to make sense of this shit and make an informed decision?
A few weeks ago a salesman came through my neighborhood offering to do work that would be paid by my homeowners insurance. After he came through I saw a few of my neighbors with signs in their yard advertising work being done by this company. I begged off when he came to my door. My question is, when a company is offering to do work that supposedly will be paid by the homeowners insurance is this a legitimate claim or is this guy doing something shady? I am a new homeowner so this is new to me.

Hello MF! I am recently engaged and need to insure my fiancé's ring. The ring is simple with a 1.2 ct. princess cut stone. The ring is appraised at about 10K give or take. I am looking for advice on which companies AskMeFi users have had experience with as most of the reviews that I have read on jewelry insurance seem negative and most people just have an axe to grind because something didn't go their way. Any success stories out there? Which insurance companies would you recommend? I would prefer a company that specializes in jewelry insurance and not a rider on my homeowners policy. Thank you in advance!
A friend from out of state (US) has asked if they could use my address to be considered to be in my city's insurance network, thereby saving them a lot of cost. I realize this is insurance fraud. I'm going to turn them down, but what would be the potential ramifications if I didn't?
I used to live in CT, where health insurance is cheap and great. A couple of years ago, I moved to NY (state, not city), where coverage is expensive and lousy. So I've maintained my old CT policy (Anthem), using a home address that's actually a mail drop. Am I living dangerously? [more inside]

When I turned 26 a few weeks ago, I was summarily dropped from the health insurance my mother gets through her job ( I was eligible to stay until 26 b/c of a disability). I am helping a family friend who was in a severe car accident. She is not a native English speaker and has zero experience with lawyers. I have worked with them plenty in a business setting, but never around personal injury. There is no question of fault and she has injuries that will impact her for life. Should we try to negotiate with the insurance company ourselves and save the 30% fee an attorney would take? [more inside]

Howdy. The good news is that I've finally been accepted for health insurance via Covered California. The bad news is that it's for 90 days only because the program needs additional information. I can mail it (nope), fax it (prefer not to) or upload it (yay). Only problem is, the user interface is fairly sucky. I cannot find the mystery link to uploading information. Maybe it's me, maybe it's the site. Either way, would be grateful for a link or explanation if you know how to perform file uploading magic.

I need to get an MRI and my insurance wants my doctor's office to send them a notification, otherwise I'll be subject to a financial penalty. My stepdaughter and infant granddaughter will be visiting us in Ontario from Manitoba for 2-3 weeks over Christmas. I'm getting conflicting information about whether they need supplementary travel health insurance over and above what their Manitoba Health Card covers with inter-provincial agreements. What is covered? What isn't? How much should I expect to pay for extra coverage?
