House Insurance - Should I increase my replacement costs?

I got my next house insurance bill (due in October.) My Dwelling and Other Structures (house + detached garage) are listed at a Limit of Liability which is 5% less than the house/garage cost four years ago and at least 20% less than it would cost to replace them now (since house building hasn't gotten cheaper and my house has increased 10-15% in value according to real estate comps.) Should I increase the Dwelling and Other Structures coverages to cover what it would really take to rebuild my house?

Can I get MS prescription filled before losing my insurance plan?

Hello all, I can't find this answer anywhere (without directly asking my insurance company). My wife has multiple sclerosis, and without insurance her medication costs $6k per month. On our current plan I play $30 for a 3 month supply via the specialty pharmacy home delivery. We are losing this coverage at the end of August, but have a delivery in progress and will receive the next 6 months worth before we lose coverage. Is there some way they can charge me for the medication already received if I lose coverage for the following months? [more inside]

Truck drove into my car door. Any recourse?

A truck backed into my driver's side door as I was getting out to go to the grocery store. His insurance says we're 50-50 at fault. I don't agree, but of course I don't. I have anxiety and don't trust most of my gut reactions to things. Most of the people in my life say "No. The other driver's at fault. Push back." I'm looking for outside opinions. [more inside]

Cool insurance-related jobs, real or fictional!

Seeking good descriptions of insurance jobs that are as gripping as I know they can be -- ideally, not life or health, but more like writing policies or investigating damage/loss to property. A fact-laden account of the work performed by real people would be best, but fictional is okay too. I remember television's Banacek, and the Thomas Crown Affair, as being interesting but not much about the nitty-gritty; incidental characters as in Groundhog Day (watch out for that pothole!) not as helpful. Thanks!

How long should insurance take to finalize an auto damage estimate?

I was hit by another driver, who sped off and likely won't be caught (no plate). I have coverage for this but it took nearly three weeks for my insurance company to approve the estimate from the shop. Neighbor wants to replace wall separating our gardens, what do I do?

My NYC townhouse has a garden in the back. The garden has a wall around it, which has been there for decades. Two nearby trees has caused it to bow out of alignment toward my neighbor's garden, though not dramatically so. My neighbor claims in a letter to me that the wall will one day collapse into her garden, and wants us to share the cost of replacing the wall, before that happens, with a fence. She also said that if I don't agree to do this, I better make sure that my insurance covers the possible damage to her property that a collapse could cause. I think my neighbor (who is wealthy) just wants a new fence for aesthetic reasons so it matches other fencing on her property, and that the wall is fine -- and I have some questions for the hive-mind... Are all qualifying life events created equal?

My understanding was that a "qualifying life event" - new job for you or spouse, you or spouse divorce/die, you or spouse give birth to or adopt a child - opened a free open enrollment period for you, spouse, and child, wherein you could do things such as decline insurance from one spouse's plan and both enroll on the other plan, and generally make whatever health insurance changes you wanted to. My HR rep told me that this is not always the case for birth/adoption of a child specifically - more inside. [more inside]

Not-My-Fault Accident. Other driver wants to settle without insurance

Yesterday I was rear ended by a young woman driving a scooter. She apologized and admitted fault. I took her contact information and insurance information, but did not file a police report. I thought the proper thing to do was to call my insurer, tell them what happened, and give them the other driver's insurance information, and I did so. I assumed that I should let them handle the claim. Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake. Your help would be appreciated. [more inside]

Car insurance, Ontario edition

(Asking for a family member). They were rear-ended in someone else's car, as a passenger, in February. The insurance of the driver of the car she was in has told them that claims (for physio etc) need to go through their soon-to-be-ex-spouse's insurance--they separated in September. My family member said that the insurance adjuster used a specific word they can't remember, but that essentially as a married (on paper) person, the spouse's insurance takes precedence. [more inside]

How would you respond to this email

This is not a claims call, but a how are you doing call – as your agent my job is to look after you. I am not getting involved on the claims side of it. I would assume you provided your lawyers info to claims? I don’t have access to that system. I just saw the claim, and was concerned about how you are. It is what we do which is take care of people. If you think this is something you shouldn’t share, then I understand, because I have also been hurt in a accident in the past and know what it is like. My accident ended up paying for my graduate degree. If it was a serious accident, then we should talk about the other protections that you should have in place, such as disability and life insurance. You can’t rely on your employer to take care of you. How do you respond to this email? [more inside]

A few weeks ago a salesman came through my neighborhood offering to do work that would be paid by my homeowners insurance. After he came through I saw a few of my neighbors with signs in their yard advertising work being done by this company. I begged off when he came to my door. My question is, when a company is offering to do work that supposedly will be paid by the homeowners insurance is this a legitimate claim or is this guy doing something shady? Trusted Engagement Ring Insurance?

Hello MF! I am recently engaged and need to insure my fiancé's ring. The ring is simple with a 1.2 ct. princess cut stone. The ring is appraised at about 10K give or take. I am looking for advice on which companies AskMeFi users have had experience with as most of the reviews that I have read on jewelry insurance seem negative and most people just have an axe to grind because something didn't go their way. Any success stories out there? Which insurance companies would you recommend? I would prefer a company that specializes in jewelry insurance and not a rider on my homeowners policy. Thank you in advance!
