Hertz fender bender, do I need to file police report, and am I covered? [more inside]

I'm the owner of a 2002 Toyota Corolla which just hit 107,000 miles. On June 9th while I was at work, my car got hammered by some pretty large hail. The damage was enough that my insurance (Progressive) declared it a total loss. My frugal heart couldn't bear to have them tow away a perfectly drivable car, so I took the lesser payout (just under $5000) and kept it. Now what? [more inside]

This may be a longshot, even for the diverse crowd here at AskMeFi. My daughter's horse was diagnosed with Lyme Disease in January. We caught it very early and the horse has made a full recovery and is back to normal in every way. However, the annual renewal on our Life/Major Medical policy for the horse includes this clause. An exclusion for any loss or expense due to Lyme disease or any underlying related condition will apply to all coverages. Diagnosing Lyme is a bit of a judgment call as it is, and this seems like a huge get-out-of-ever-paying-any-claim-again loophole as pretty much anything that may ever affect the horse in the future could conceivably be blamed on Lyme Disease. The question for anybody that may have experience with this...is there any reason to maintain a policy with that loophole?

Trigeminal neuralgia. I recently found out it's the cause of the random, stabbing shocks in my face and I'm looking for experiences and advice, especially with regards to treatment. What helped? How did you deal? Did it go away on its own? I have no insurance, so while I'd like recommendations on ALL treatment forms ones that don't cost as much are especially welcome. [more inside]

A friend, a 62 year old woman, was injured while driving in TN; her car was totalled. She is suffering back pain. She has been to an attorney who has retained an independent doctor to evaluate her. The doctor has assessed that she retains 5% PPI (permanent personal impairment?). The question she has - what is the likely dollar value of the settlement based on the 5%?

The company that administers my COBRA benefits terminated me because, they said, of an NSF check, which my bank had told me would clear. But it didn't because the check was put thru literally hours before a hold on a $500 check was released. Apparently the bank rep was figuring that either A) the bank would pay the check (they have before) or B) the hold release would happen before the check came thru. My cyber-statement even shows that the check was paid; then the next day it was sent back. (So when I checked my cyber-statement to confirm the info from the phone rep, the check was shown as having been pd.) Q 1) How and to whom do I appeal? Q 2) Is it worth the effort?

I got laid off about a month ago in NYC. Applied for unemployment insurance and got approved, no problems. I pay for my own health insurance in NYC (via Freelancer's Union) and am moving to Cleveland. Freelancer's Union has a deal in place where, if I remain a member, I can buy insurance through a company called Golden Rule, but there appear to be no advantages of going that route. So, anyone in Cleveland familiar with self-insurance options? Or a reputable broker?

I live overseas for 10 months a year. I am finding it very difficult to get health insurance. No preexisting conditions, no smoking, not obese, but I am only barely a resident of California, and this seems to be a tripping point. All I want is a basic, high deductible plan for emergencies. I am currently covered in Virginia (from a while back, never told them I moved), but since my residency is California now, they probably won't cover me. What are my options? I just spent 4 hours on applications and was turned down every time. Everything else I see on google looks dodgy.
