Omnipod vs. Medtronic?

Asking for my girlfriend, who will be checking and possibly replying to this post: I'm looking into starting on an insulin pump and I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the Omnipod and the Medtronic Minimed. Looking for any first hand experience with either. I'm also open to any other suggestions to other pumps to consider as well as which ones to avoid. [more inside]

Umm what now

Hubby was diagnosed with diabetes last week during pre-surgery check up. He had the surgery today and that was fine, but it's been sprung on him rather suddenly that this means injections 4 times a day. Most people grin and bear it but hubby has a HUGE injection phobia going back to childhood. He's in a lot of distress. I don't know what to do to help my hubby. [more inside]

Insulin and Low Carb diet

Can anyone point me to research that shows that the beta cells become "lazy" and become dormant because of a low carb diet? Or even better a LCHF diet? This is pertaining to type 2 DM. Thanks! BB

Time Travel With An Insulin Pump

My wife, who has had an insulin pump for almost 18 years, has somehow never traveled more than one time zone with it. Next week she has 5 day business trip to the West Coast, and we live on the East Coast. Any diabetic MeFi's have experience crossing 3 time zones with a pump? [more inside]

Should I just gnaw on a head of lettuce?

I've had insulin resistance and PCOS for about 8 years now. I've been on metformin off and on for most of that time. My lab results this week show elevated liver enzymes, which means I have to stop the metformin. But it also showed elevated blood sugars over the last 3 months, which means I have to get the sugars better controlled. Since I can't take the metformin right now, I have to try to manage this with diet. I have no idea what to eat. Can you help? [more inside]

Are You Happy with Your Insulin Pump?

I am a 60 year old male who has had type 1 diabetes for 54 years. I have taken insulin injections every day since being diagnosed. For the last 30 years, I have taken 2-4 shots daily. Since the needles are now so thin and sharp, I don't feel pain with the injections, but it is such a nuisance to always have insulin and syringes with me and sometimes to have to find a place to inject. I am still fairly active (knock, knock) and am considering an insulin pump. Will you kindly tell me your experiences, good or bad, with your pump? Thanks!

Help paying for insulin.

How can we pay for insulin without insurance? Aside from getting a credit card, are there any other ways? Cheap short term insurance (yeah, but for diabetics?) Or should we write a letter to the State ombudsman to try and get welfare-type insurance?

Insulin pumps in the UK

My wife is an insulin dependent diabetic who's had great success in using an insulin pump. We live in the US but are originally from the UK. After conversations with various people in the UK knowledgeable of diabetes treatment, we've learned that insulin pumps seem to be almost non-existent there. Is this really the case and if so what are the reasons?
