I use instant messaging a fair amount to talk to people all over the United States and in Europe, mostly Austria, Germany and England. Why is it that smiley faces (as in =) and :X) are so much more prevalent in Europe (at least Northern Europe) than in America? It feels like one pops up every other line, sometimes twice in the same sentence. I should mention that I am young (18) and so are the people I talk to.

I want a fully-featured instant messaging system (not just the client, and with support for webcams, etc.) that is open source. Ideally I would like to find one that exists, but I am willing to look into starting one. Any suggestions or advice for what to look at and/or how to go about it is welcome. [more inside]

I have an 11 year-old brother who is interested in using Yahoo Instant Messenger (or I suppose any other IM program for that matter), but my parents are a little hesitant to let him do so. And understandably so I think. Do any of you let your pre-teens use any IM programs? Is there some sort of method you have worked out for them using it? A monitoring program perhaps? Extended explanation inside. [more inside]

So I'm interested in finally using my iChat to meet and hang out with folks online, as well as use my iSight for something more than scanning books. Does anybody know of fun ways to meet folks in iChat? Perhaps a community or two? [more inside]

So, now I want to dump AOL Instant Messenger, and convince all of my friends and relatives to do the same. I want something that isn't too fly-by-night, so I can be sure it'll last, and it's gotta have a little higher usability-quotient than I recall ICQ ever having. Ease of use on-par with AIM (so non-tech-savvy family can install it and set it up) is important, too. Any suggestions?

Is there an IM client that will allow voice chat from behind a firewall? I can change my settings but the person I'm trying to talk to is sitting behind a Linksys router with default firewall settings and is unwilling to let me change them.

Is there a free service that will send me IM's via AIM when there's breaking news? ABC does mail alerts but they aren't "breaking" by the time I read them. How about weather alerts too?

I'm looking for chat/IM sounds that aren't pop culture and don't suck. I can't find anything that properly balances between obnoxious and ignorable. Seems like something Apple would have done but I'm coming up dry.
