I keep waking up too early. Is this pathological?

Over the past six months, I've got into this consistent habit of waking up much too early. Like from 4 to 5am. That would be fine except I go to bed around 12 or 1. Is this a big problem? [more inside]

Advice for sleeping with sudden insomnia?

I haven't been able to sleep well for the past week; this is totally out of the blue, as I usually get around 7 hours of z's. I think it's due to stress. I'm averaging around 3 hours on a good night, which is taking its toll on my physical/emotional/cognitive health. I'm actually dreading getting into bed tonight, and would like some advice from MeFites who are struggling with/have overcome insomnia on how I can best rig my chances for possibly sleeping well. Please help me sleep again!

I aggravated a lower back injury on June 3rd. This injury caused pretty bad nerve pain down my right leg that totally disrupted my sleep. Even though I am feeling much better now physically, my normal sleep has not returned. Note: I have read a bunch of AskMes about insomnia but I thought I would get some fresh responses here. Mind Games!!!!! To help me fall asleep.... Tell me yours

For years, when I couldn't sleep for whatever reason, I was able to mindlessly play this game where I would picture my dream flat (which was an actual place I had spent time) and arrange the furniture in it how I would do it if it was mine. Now it doesn't work. What are your mental mindless games you use to drift off to sleep, or relax? [more inside]

Can you suggest dull and informative podcasts to help me fall asleep?

Sometimes I have trouble falling asleep because I can't stop worrying over issues of the day. I've found that listening to a slightly boring podcast really helps in those situations. So far, I've been listening to history podcasts but I think the technique would work with other subject areas and I'd like to find more such podcasts. I'm looking for intelligent and serious podcasts (little to no humorous banter) on important and/or academic topics. Ideally, the presenters would have monotonous voices and would spend a bit too much time on the dull minutiae, but the subject matter would be sufficiently interesting to help me stop thinking about other issues. I don't want to hear a group of friends or colleagues bantering. I don't want to hear comics interviewing each other. Pseudo-science or woo won't help because I may respond emotionally.

I keep good sleep hygiene. I have herbal tea and a warm bath/shower an hour before bed. I take 50-75 mg of Benedryl (or equivalent) every night. I'm still only sleeping 3-4 hours a night. I can't take Ambien because it makes me sleepwalk. Ideas?

Help! I can't stay asleep.

Here's what a typical night looks like for me: 1. Go to bed between 10pm and midnight. Fall asleep easily. 2. 3-4 hours later, wake up for no apparent reason. Turn over and (usually) fall asleep again. 3. An hour or two later, wake up again. If lucky, fall asleep again; if unlucky, toss and turn for a while first. 4. Repeat step 3 several more times until morning. 5. Get out of bed at 9 or 10 feeling tired and unrefreshed. The awakenings happen for no discernible reason. I don't have nightmares, need to pee, etc., I just find myself awake. On an average night I wake up 4-5 times. [more inside]

Why does sleepiness elude me?

As I head into the darkness of winter in Northern England, I'm starting to notice the same pattern I suffered from last year...sleeping even less than I normally do (4-6 hours instead of 6-7).
