MySQL datetime insert

Inserting a date into MySQL? Is there a to_date() equivalent to convert a string to a datetime? I can do this in Oracle:

insert into table_name
(date_field)
values
(to_date('05/03/2003 21:02:44', 'mm/dd/yyyy hh24:mi:ss'));

Is there a similar to_date() function in MySQL that will let me format a string? Everything I'm finding on the web says that the only way to do it is if your string is already in 'YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS' format (that's from the manual)

I have a few hundred records in a text file that I need load into a table, so I can't use tricks like now() and I really don't want to have to fix a all those dates. Ideas? Suggestions?

Blue Shoe (inserts)... don't know the name.

I used to own blue shoe inserts for over pronation... except they weren't labeled. Any clue to what they might be called or where to buy them? Any alternate suggestions from fellow flat footers rollin' inwards? The doctor gave them to me originally, but mentioned they were available from specialty stores (probably around 6 years ago). My google-fu found them ~ 3 years ago, but the -fu is coming up short now, and I of course did not bookmark the site that had them... who does that! I also threw out the old ones since they were sweaty, stinky and gross (but oh so comfortable...).

Quick description
Blue (not navy blue) cloth top
Red foamy type bottom, tilted in the correct direction for overpronators.

They weren't custom, and were priced around $50-$60/pair from what I remember. And they weren't Dr. Scholl's ____, although I have never tried Dr. Scholl's.

I do own a pair of custom inserts molded to my foot, but they're a "slick" top vs. a cloth top, so my feet slide around. The aforementioned inserts were a bit more cushy, and wore out much more quickly, as to be expected.

Need help with a SQL query

I've got what should be an uber-simple SQL question.... I have a database with ~140,000 entries. I added a column (referred to here as "daviddata"). Currently, all ~140K entries into said column are null, as they should be. However, I want to change all ~140K entries to have some value in that column. Either a '1' or a 'Yes' or something similar. It's a nvarchar(50), if it matters.

How can I quickly update this column? All of the entries in that column will be exactly the same, with no variation, but I can't seem to figure this (seemingly) simple task out. Thanks in advance!

Cardboard t-shirt inserts? For sale?

You know those cardboard inserts you can put in t-shirts so they keep their shape for displaying purposes? I need some of those. Where can I buy them? I'm having a hard time Googling this. Would they have them at crafts stores? Fabric stores? Are there places online I can order them? Why can't I seem to find results searching for combinations of the words "cardboard", "t-shirt", and "insert"?

How can I print new DVD inserts?

How can I print a series of .jpg files to exact size specifications? I fear this is going to be a really easy/stupid question, but I swear I've searched and can't figure it out.

Here's what I have:
A PC running Windows XP
A Macbook running Leopard
An HP Photosmart C4280 (NB: An answer to my question that would work this printer would be great, but if there isn't one then I would be open to hearing about other printers that might work.)

Here's what I want:

I have a jpg file. I want to tell the computer to print the jpg file so that when I hold it in my hands, the picture on the piece of paper measures x cm by y cm. That is, I want whatever program I'm using to be able to blow up/shrink the picture to an exact size. Is this possible?

To be more specific, I'm trying to make DVD inserts because a few of my cases were inadvertently broken and the little inserts inside got ripped. I bought a package of Memorex brand DVD inserts, which are scored pieces of paper for easy cutting. The inserts came with a program, but the program sucks and I can't get it to print very precisely on the paper. Both the PC and the Mac versions of this program (Expressit) are atrocious.

So, what's the best way to print these covers?

How do I use AU effects as inserts in my system audio?

I've searched for a software utility for Mac OSX, which would allow audio moving through the system to be processed with Audio Units effects in realtime, with no luck. Help! So I record a podcast show with my cohost, who is on the other side of the country. We use Skype to communicate with each other, and he intiates Skype calls with SkypeOut, for bringing guests onto the show.

So the catch is that I'd love to hang a decent software AU (Audio Units) compressor/track plug on my outgoing audio - I'm using a decent mic with an external USB audio interface - but I've found absolutely nothing that will let me tack an AU plug onto my outgoing audio. I suspect that it would be something that would appear in the Sound system pref pane, that would patch in an AU effect/s as an insert, but as far as I can tell, there is no such utility. Yes, my cohost can hang AU plugs in the software he's using to capture the mix moving through his machine (Audio Hijack Pro), but he can't limit it to specific channels (such as only my Skype channel - as far as I can tell, it applies the audio effect to the overall system mix).

Anyone know if there's an answer, outside of getting a hardware compressor/limiter?

Fire in the hole!

Tell me about gas fireplace inserts: What do they cost (approx.), what are the good-to-better brands, and what features are nice to have. We're in the SF Bay Area, so this is primarily for aesthetics and some cozy-ness, not the primary heat source for the house. Our house has a 1960-era masonry fireplace that we use very rarely. The plan is to re-face the fireplace/hearth (which is ugly, stained brick), and while we are doing that, we thought it would be nice to also install a more efficient gas fireplace insert, since our area has restrictions on particulates. Overall goal is something that's clean, efficient, generates heat when needed without pulling heat from the house, and won't fall to pieces after a few years of use (I don't mind spending a bit more for quality.)

My initial visit to a dealer in my area got me a quote for $3500/installed (not including running gas and power to the fireplace). As a ballpark figure, is this good, bad, or otherwise?

Anyway, that's the gist of the request. Tell me what I should know/be aware of/expect when looking at these beasties, and which brands are good or better-than-average.

Mac version of Insert?

Mac Word Filter: Help me turn off the Mac version of the Insert button. Every now and again, I hit something by accident that makes typing overwrite whatever is in front of my cursor, just like I've hit the Insert button on a PC. (I use a Mac.) The only way I can figure out how to turn it off is to reboot. What key or key combo should I be hitting to go back to normal so when I type, whatever's in front of my cursor gets pushed to the right to make room for the new characters?

Is it really just called an "adapter"?

What would you call this thing?
