Any suggestions for inns or small hotels that incorporate modern/minimalist design? I'm trying to avoid the Victorian, lace, floral aesthetic. I'm particularly interested in the New England/East Coast area.

Quiet inn, trees, a lake, maybe some hiking - where can I find these things within an hour or so of Toronto?

Has anyone ever done any innsitting - either formally, through a service, or informally by personal arrangement? How'd you get into it? What would you recommend if I'd like to try it?

After a week-long business meeting in San Diego in April, I'd like to take a couple days of vacation to actually visit the city, but but I'm having trouble getting a handle on where to stay (and where to look for a place to stay?)

My wife is driving with a friend and out 11-yr old god-daughter from our home in Sacramento down to San Diego, leaving Sunday evening. They expect to be near San Luis Obispo when it's time to pull over and go to sleep. Can anyone suggest a good, interesting, fun or otherwise worthy hotel/motel/inn/b&b in the area?
I hate to ask 2 questions in one day, but you are all so very helpful! Please forgive me.
