A couple of months ago I took up running. I've been pacing myself, working on proper form and using the couch 2 5k app. I haven't been having much trouble at all after the initial shin splints and leg cramps. That is until Wednesday, when my first race was Friday. [more inside]
My friend fell about 15 feet while we were bouldering and severely dislocated his elbow. Tendons were, to the surprise of the doctor, not torn; ligaments were pretty bad, broken. They said he had a "terrible trifecta". He currently has his arm in a cast and they're monitoring progress to determine surgery or not. We're likely looking at some 15 weeks he's in some state of immobility for his arm. He is supposed to rotate his shoulder as much as possible and clench his hand. He's an incredibly active and dynamic person and very much wants to recover fully and get back to activity. It's pretty difficult to watch him in the current state , despite the fact that we're so glad that he only injured his elbow. How do we help him have the best recovery possible? 1) Tips for supporting the physical recovery of a dislocated appendage and 2) Does anyone have any tips on how to stay sane during his time out? Everything appreciated. Thanks!

YANMD: I tweaked my achillies playing tennis last night (this has happened before), I'm quite limpy and in pain today. My parents (who I rarely get to see) are coming to town this weekend and we have a great hike planned. What should I be doing for the next 48 hours to increase the likelihood that we can actually go out as planned?
I'm midway through a 13-week beginner's running program. Today was supposed to be a run day for me, but I noticed a little twinge in my ankle last night, and the soreness has persisted. Skipped the run for today, but I'm wondering how long I should rest the ankle before attempting to run again? Spent the day reading about high ankle sprains and freaking myself out, need some advice from experienced runners. [more inside]

I fractured my second, third, and fourth metatarsals, my medial cuneiform bone, and I have what is called a Lisfranc injury in my left foot. How much mobility will I have as the healing progresses? How can I prevent gaining weight and stay in shape? How the heck am I going to move to Manhattan? [more inside]

Thanks to a douchebag contractor that dumped a cubic yard of broken cinder blocks in the bike lane, we're back to the eternal question: Is it better to leave a large but shallow scrape injury open to the air or cover it? Or is there some other thing I should be doing? [more inside]

I'm addicted to running. I've injured myself. I'm forcing myself to take a couple days off. How do I speed up healing--because come hell or high water I'm going to be back at it on Monday (provided I can restrain myself). [more inside]
