'Negative' information search / disprove info?

In what way could I reliably find out whether a person still lives at a given address, while specifically NOT hearing anything about where he moved to, and NOT indicating to him that I'm seeking this info or that anyone's seeking it on my behalf? [more inside]

So many complex projects. So much information. How do I process it all?

I'm being crushed under the weight of all the information I need to process. Most of it revolves around my job. I've thought about it ad nauseum, and I sincerely don't think there's the option to just back off from certain responsibilities to lighten my load. Delegation to others is also not an option, at least at the moment. I just have to be able to absorb all the information coming into me, sort it, process it in my mind, generate new thoughts based on it, and then ACT on it. I need some way of keeping this all organized, and it should be malleable and adaptable since things change all the time around here. [more inside]

Clean personal info off work computer while leaving apps behind?

I got a new job (cool!) but have to turn in my MacBook Air from old job (oh well). Since I also used as my primary laptop for personal stuff, like banking and Facebook, it also has a ton of personal data on it. (I plan to buy my own laptop for next job. And no, I did not look at naughty stuff on it -- I do have a tablet.) The company wants the programs already installed left on the computer, which is reasonable -- so leave Photoshop and Word installed -- but I want to clear off any personal data. Is there a good way to scrub an Apple computer while leaving programs behind? Right now you could go to Twitter on my browser and log into my personal account without a problem. (I realize I can just Clear History on browsers, but also looking for deeper scrub, such as WiFi passwords and stuff on keychains).

What's the Consensus on Simple's New TOS?

Since enthusiasm here was what got me interested in Simple banking to begin with, I'm surprised to see no discussion about recent dismaying info-sharing changes to their TOS (which all users must agree to) coming after they partnered with an outfit called CheckFreePay. Are other Simple users sticking with the service? [more inside]

Businesses in New York that have been around for over 100 years

I'd like to compile a list of businesses in New York City—starting with Manhattan—that have been around for 100 years or more. I'd also like to include places the public can visit that aren't "businesses" per se. I'm guessing this information is publicly available, but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

online masters in library science

I'm planning to get a Masters in Library and Information Science. There are no schools that offer this program that are close enough to me at present. There are several online programs that are ALA accredited that I'm interested in. Does anyone have any experience with whether online masters programs are looked down upon when hiring in the library field? (Primarily looking at being a public librarian, if it matters.)

Cultivating an organisation's knowledge base

I am part of a large distributed community that voluntarily runs a major but low-budget yearly event. We usually have 100% main organiser turnover year to year, because the job is hard and unpaid. There's a lot of organising info that is hard to retain year to year, and a consensus that information retention is currently poor. Do you belong to a community that has successfully solved this kind of problem? What works for you? What doesn't work? [more inside]

Help me understand what a proper business IT system looks like.

I've only worked in a small business (15-20 employees) since I got out of school, and I've handled the technological necessities since I started because nobody else could. I've handled things on an as-needed basis: troubleshooting problems, setting up new computers, maintaining an iron grip on software installations, setting up the network and administering simple network devices, etc. However, I'm completely self-taught, and I have no idea if my hacked-together system looks anything like a properly-implemented corporate IT system. So I want to know what one looks like. Specifically, I'd like to know if there are any resources I can check out on my own that paint the picture of what I should be trying to achieve. NOTE: I'm NOT averse to hiring an outside IT firm or consultant to help with specification and implementation. However, I don't want to be at the mercy of a firm's "knowledge" and my own ignorance; you can waste a lot of money that way, regardless of scenario. [more inside]

How do groups best collaborate on projects?

I work in a small business that reflects a lot of the same problems I've seen in other groups when they try to be productive. You get some people in a room with an intent to create an outcome, a project that is going to take considerable amount of time, thought, resources and creativity. Just getting people to stick to one single discussion thread in this large project becomes practically impossible. How do groups collaborate successfully to create an outcome that is worth the effort? [more inside]

I might finally come to be worth something to society! Maybe...?

Hi Mefites. I'll be starting an online medical coding and billing course in January ( given by the AAPC), after graduating from a relatively well respected state school with a psychology BA in May and finding out far too late in the game that it would leave me with nil in terms of job prospects. After building up quite a bit of credit card debt and deciding that man cannot live on Hulu and Facebook alone, as I've been doing for six months, I decided to look into opportunities that required relatively little training to get started with, and happened upon medical billing, something that seems to fit me quite well. I'm tempering my enthusiasm however, because no amount of Googling seems to give me a clear sense of my path once the course is over. Help? [more inside]

How do people research and learn out stocks and other investments?

I have a bit of discretionary money (1k). Rather than just letting it sit in a bank account earning basically no interest, I am opting to dip my toes in to the world of stocks, options, investing, etc. Other than buying shares in a company I am already aware of and think is going to do well in the future (which isn't always that simple, I know), how do people independently (ie. not via a broker) research and learn about other stocks and worthy investments? How to usefully download posts and comments from a secret Facebook group

I have been running a Facebook group since 2012 and I got a grant to do research with the findings from it. I need to download the group's postings and responses into a table and thinking the most reliable way to do so is with SQL. However, I have only just started with SQL and although I have found some ideas on Github for doing it, have no idea how to get started with pulling the information.
