I'm considering renting an apartment with an induction stovetop. I had not been familiar with induction cooking, and in Googling it came across some sites that express concerns about the potential effects of electromagnetic fields generated by induction cooking (example: Swiss Federal Office of Public Health). I would like some more informed opinion on this subject (not "I have one and I'm fine"), specifically on the potential for harm and possible effects, either in linked readings elsewhere or from knowledgeable members of the community. I will be 39 weeks along tomorrow. All of my OB appointments have basically amounted to urine test, weight, blood pressure, various forms of checking stuff with the pronouncement, "EVERYTHING'S GOING SO WELL." I am thinking of buying a portable induction burner. (A built-in or gas unit is not an option.) Several of my cookware items are not induction-compatible, and I don't want to replace them. Must I purchase an "induction interface disc" or can I just get a cheap induction-compatible frying pan and put non-magnetic pans on top of that instead? How are these items different? Why is this a specialized product? What am I missing about cooking with induction? Nobody in my household is much of a cook, so we're not looking for incredible performance-- we just want hot food. If the burner heats the interface and the interface heats the pot, I get that there will be heat loss, but why is a special interface disc a $50 product?
My wife is 20 weeks pregnant - we conceived via IVF. We went for an ultrasound scan the other day and afterwards spoke to a consultant. She told us that because of the IVF, she recommended that labour should be induced if the baby hadn't come by 40 weeks. We'd much rather have a home birth, which wouldn't be possible with an induction. When we asked about the risks of waiting longer than 40 weeks, the doctor didn't give us much information - it felt like she was just fobbing us off. I have been diagnosed with the dreaded pre-eclamsia. Good news is that we are 40 weeks! Bad news- my cervix didn't get the memo. I am being induced on Monday. Given my 'unfavorable' cervix, should I ask for a c-section or go ahead with the induction. If there are engineers out there is there some reason why these units shouldn't work as well as inbuilt units?
