I am trying to find photos or videos of Unnamed Star Mountains Airport (WXX4) in Papua, Indonesia. This is for a hobby-project, so they don't need to be great, but I am hoping for something better than the gray blob I see on Google Earth/Maps. [more inside]
We are almost at the end of our time in Sydney, Oz and have three weeks (but could stretch to another 3-4 days) to visit Bali. I have a long list of stuff for us to see/do but am not sure how much of it is really possible in our time frame. Bali people/lovers, do you have any tips/tricks? [more inside]
I now live in Indonesia and have access to some great coffee beans. Some US friends want me to ship some packs, and I'm about to! Some good local roasters too. For those of you who have coffee subscriptions already, - what format do you prefer (weekly/ monthly) - did you like exploring 'new' beans outside your typical taste profile - what made the different between a truly great coffee sub service and a regular one, in your mind?
Yesterday I took a (metred) taxi in Bali. Upon arriving at my destination, I attempted to pay the driver. He said "no sir, no sir" and made me get out of the taxi, at which point I paid him by passing the money to him through the open passenger-side window. Is this some kind of local taxi etiquette? Is there a reason for it?
Going to Yogyakarta for five days, as a base for exploring that region of Indonesia. I have a guidebook but no hotel reservations/set plans, other than taking a day trip out to Borobudur. Any advice (re: things to see/do/eat or areas to check out or avoid) coming from personal experience would be much appreciated. Thanks!
A friend of mine is visiting Jakarta and will be taking a shopping trip to Pasaraya Grande as part of his tour. I love fabrics and I particularly love traditional dye work (such as batik) and handwoven cloth. However, I don't know much about the textiles of Indonesia, and I've never been there myself. What kinds of pieces are available at the Pasaraya Grande, and how are they priced? I'd like to give him some money and just tell him to get me something awesome -- what could he get for, say, $100 USD? How about $20 USD? [more inside]
I have a round-trip ticket to Jakarta for a week in early May but have no plans beyond seeing the city for a day or two. What sort of excursions to worthwhile places can I take from Jakarta as either day trips, or up to 3-4 nights? (I'd prefer not to fly anywhere as I'll only be in that region for a week, but I would be willing to take bus/boat/train rides of up to 4 or 5 hours from Jakarta.) Thanks!
We are thinking of applying for jobs in international schools in the next few years. We'd like to choose between Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia or Hong Kong. What we would prefer - a financial situation that is a little more comfortable than the one we can have in Melbourne on 2 teaching wages (private sector so slightly better pay than state). This could mean only one of us working but getting housing included - a situation that is conducive to the fact that we will have one small child (baby due soon) We've both been to KL and travelled reasonably extensively in Indonesia. We have some contacts in Jakarta. I've spent a day in Singapore and neither of us have been to Hong Kong. We'd appreciate info on lifestyle, housing costs and the kinds of packages one is likely to get from an international school. [more inside]

Has anyone ever successfully booked travel on Indonesia's Lion Air? They seem to require an Indonesian credit card, which I decidedly do not have. Suggestions on how to get around this? Bonus question! Why would an airline restrict its clientele to one country?
I'm trying to learn more about contemporary Indonesia, and I'd love book & essay recommendations, especially of narrative non-fiction with a strong first person narrative voice! (But I'd also love suggestions of fiction, good travelogues, podcasts, blogs, zines, films, academic articles--really anything that doesn't demand prior in depth knowledge.) [more inside]
My Dad lives in Singapore, and I'll be visiting him for two weeks this summer. He'll be pretty busy with work during the week, and I'm trying to plan one or two day trips (spending one night somewhere else is fine, but no more than that). Where can I go that is a) safe to travel alone to (I'm an upper-20s female)? and b) relatively cheap (I'm thinking probably a bus, train, or boat ride to somewhere in Indonesia or Malaysia)? I want to spend some time in SE Asia. I have three or four months to do this (January through April). I could spend up to $5k-6k on this, though much cheaper would be better. Help me sort this out. [more inside]

Obama in Jakarta: Does anyone know where and what time Obama will address the public in Jakarta? I heard through the grapevine that he might deliver a speech at the Universitas Indonesia. But my searches on the internet have only turned up information about a speech at the Istiqlal Mosque. Still, there is no information about date or time. I would like to see him, if I can. Thanks.
