From LAX to IND with no stops - that's possible right?

Does any airline fly direct from anywhere in the Los Angeles area to Indianapolis? I've been looking for a little bit here now and I haven't found one airline that's direct to Indianapolis. Am I crazy? There's nothing? Not from Long Beach? Not from Burbank? Not from Ontario? How is that possible? Indianapolis is a pretty big city for the midwest isn't it?

Are there ANY direct options or am I nuts?

Movies inspired by films of the 30's-50's? After reading this recent fpp I stumbled across a comment by Piratebowling:

So, when the [fake] Ghostbusters trailer started floating around the internet a month or so ago, I got really excited, because it reminded me of how much movies from the 80's were drawing on material from the 30's through 50's. Ghostbusters took Abbott and Costello themes and ran with them in a more modern direction. Indiana Jones was an homage to older action serials (as wonderfully shown with the trailer here.)
. . .
Anyway, since I noticed this, I want to see more. These trailers are scratching that itch a bit, but any recommendations for 80's films drawing on inspiration from older films?

I'm actually curious about this as well, thus the askme post. What are some films (not just from the 80's) that draw heavily from the films of the 30's-50's? And not as in "it has a Casablanca reference."

In addition to the examples mentioned in the thread, Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters, I can off the top of my head think of the Coens' "The Man Who Wasn't There" and "The Hudsucker Proxy", which drew from noir films and screwball comedies, respectively. "Scarface" of course was inspired by gangster films of the 30's, while Steve Martin's "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" is an excellent parody/mashup of old noir films. "Star Wars" is probably the most famous, drawing heavy inspiration (in addition to its scene transitions) from Flash Gordon serials.

South Bend, IN restaurants

I need suggestions for South Bend, Indiana restaurants. This will be for a group of ladies meeting for lunch on a Friday. We'd like a place that is local and non-franchised. Mid-range lunch price. No jungle gyms for kids to play on. WiFi would be nice. Easy parking. Plus we don't want to be rushed out in 30 minutes. Ideas?

Recommend a good dive bar in South Bend, Indiana?

Can anyone recommend a good bar in South Bend, Indiana? I'm about to fly out to South Bend, Indiana to be with my dad and visit my dying grandmother. It's not a great situation pretty much any way you look at it. She's hurting, wants to go. I'll be sleeping on an air mattress on the floor of my Dad's rented "family member room" in her nursing facility.

There's all sorts of family tension, though not necessarily between me and my dad.

Long story short, I'm going to need to escape and find a good bar this weekend, at some point. All I need is a pool table -- or pinball machines, decent music (or a solid jukebox) and some bottled beer. Maybe a whiskey or two. I'd like to take my dad out, play a few games. Just shoot some pool and shoot the shit.

Dream bars for me are the Jack outside of Missoula, MT, maybe Pharmacy Bar or the Raven in DC -- nothing too fancy. Any ideas?

Thanks *so* much in advance.

Mental health from states away

What can an adult son do to help his homeless, possibly mentally ill mother states away? My husband just got a call from his aunt that they have found his mother living homeless by the river in Madison, IN. My husband (27) has not spoken to his mother (55) in two years and the relationship has always been strained. He has long suspected that she is mentally ill and moved out as soon as he could. I have had little experience with her, but here is one example. She came to visit us and her other son 3 years ago. One night of the visit, my husband and I were going to take her out to our favorite restaurant. While we were at work that day, my husband gets a call from her saying that he is "sneaky and deceitful" and that she wasn't going to allow us to take her out to dinner. She then rented a hotel and stayed there the rest of the visit (she had previously been staying with us). Both my husband and his brother asked her what she meant, but she wouldn't tell either of them. I have no idea what it could have been. She didn't call him for a year. Next time they talk, she accuses him of being on drugs and hangs up on him. He has never done drugs in his life. My husband tells these horror stores from his childhood. I don't know what type of illness she may have, but according to family, it's been getting worse.

His aunt (who also has a strained relationship with her sister) wants my husband and his brother to come out and have some sort of intervention. What are their legal options? We live in AZ and don't have much money. We can afford a couple of flights, but not much else. I know it's very difficult (if not impossible) to get someone committed involuntarily. She is apparently very deeply in debt and hasn't been employed in over a year. She has her MA and she used to have a successful career. Would the state of Indiana pay for any sort of help? She's lived there almost her whole life. I saw the other question earlier this week, but I was hoping someone would know something pertinent to Indiana, or about children helping parents. She divorced my husband's father years ago, and he has since passed. She doesn't really have anyone close to her. What about social security? Or state health care?

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks for letting me ramble on a bit

Will I get stuck in Chicago traffic if I drive from the Milwaukee airport to South Bend, Indiana, starting at 4 pm Friday?

Chicago-driving-filter. If I leave Milwaukee (airport) at about 4 pm on Friday, and drive to South Bend, Indiana, will I spend hours in Chicago rush hour traffic? Can I avoid that somehow? What if I could move my departure time a bit earlier? Is this the route to take? Random bonus question: anyone know a convenient Apple store along this route? Thanks!

P.S. I saw this semi-related question, but it's kind of a different route.

Riding bike from Chicago to Gary, Indiana— what to do in Gary? I'm riding with some friends to Gary tomorrow, wondering if anyone has suggestions on places in Gary to see. We're interested in the old, rusting industrial parts of the city, interesting places to eat, obviously going to be stopping by the Jackson house. Any other really interesting places to go to and photograph? Any neat things to see along the way on the ride? Thanks.

What kind of snake are you mister?

Help me identify this snake we found on our deck in Bloomington, Indiana? We found the snake's skin this morning wrapped around the deck railing. The skin wasn't there yesterday. It measures just shy of 52 inches long. We didn't see the snake until midday, but now it's basking on our elevated deck. We just moved to Indiana, so we're don't know the local snakes. Close ups here and here.

Extra credit for tips on how to co-exist with this snake, but keep it out of our house.

Moving to Fort Wayne

So I've potentially got a job offer in Fort Wayne, IN. Job is great. But is Fort Wayne? First off, I know the region is economically depressed; I live in South Bend right now. But the job I'd be getting is with a firm almost completely disconnected from the manufacturing sector (insurance company with policies in 30+ states), so though they may be affected by the banking crisis, they won't be affected by the impending implosion of the Detroit automakers. But as there really isn't anywhere you can go to escape the banking crisis, I figure I just can't worry about that. So advice that jobs are at risk in that part of the country isn't immediately helpful.

What I am worried about is if Fort Wayne is the potential black-hole-of-culture that I'm afraid it might be. I'm a late-20s single male, finishing a law degree in May, and the prospect of moving to what looks like the back end of nowhere does not excite me as much as moving to, say, Chicago would.

As such, anyone who knows of cool places to live/things to do/places to eat/people to meet in the Fort Wayne area, please share your wisdom! I'm not hoping for some undiscovered cultural Mecca, but anything which would break up acute Midwestern third-tier city monotony would be greatly appreciated. Athletic activities (other than cycling) are of less interest than cultural ones, FWIW. Music, film, art, food, where-the-cool-kids-hang-out, whatever you got would be welcome.

Oh, and if anyone knows of neighborhoods not to go/live, I'd love to hear that too. Thanks!

What's to like about Muncie, Indiana? For better or worse, I have an attractive job opportunity in Muncie, Indiana. As a lifelong east coast liberal (mid-Atlantic, college-town variety), I'm concerned about moving there.
Help me find good broadband in Indiana for my mom.

I'm in the UK, my mom is in Central Indiana. I would like to recommend her a good broadband package that will let us chat over Skype, etc. So nothing too underpowered.

Her phone is currently with AT&T, and she would prefer to keep things as simple and non-expensive as possible, and do it through them as well, if that's a decent course of action to take. So far, I've found their most basic package at $14.99 only offers 768 Kbps downstream, but I'm thinking that if we evolve to the point of video chat I should consider the $25.99 a month package, which offers up to 1.5 Mbps.

Are these prices even fair? Pound for dollar, I get 16Mbps for £15 here, so I'm a little thrown at how little you get for your money.

I want to keep this as un-complicated as possible. An ideal scenario is me setting the whole thing up online, ordering the package, the router arrives and a neighbourhood kid plugs it in to her computer. None of this $200 call-out technician nonsense.

Experiences and recommendations are welcome. Thanks in advance

Rustbelt Roadtrip!

Looking for tips for my upcoming Minneapolis - New York roadtrip. Specifically, where should I sleep, and are there cool things along the way I should check out? I'll be by myself and this will be in December. I've done variations on this trip several times, but never by myself and always in a rush. Since i'll be doing this trip alone, I plan on pacing myself: 19 hours over three or maybe even four days. Here's a map of the route I'm likely to take, with this route as an alternative.

Questions:

Where are good places to stay along this route? I'd like to try to stay in some cute towns, as opposed to a strip mall motel or spending 3 hours getting into and out of a city like Chicago. I'm really into old industrial towns, which there should be a lot of along this route. Or a college town could be good. Either way, a hotel/motel in town where I can walk to a nearby restaurant/coffee shop after a day of driving would be perfect, and I'd like to keep it under $100/night.

Any other good places to stop along the way? I'm looking for good places to eat (ie, great examples of local cuisine, exceptional road food, diners, etc) or cool historical spots, or really anything interesting along the way to break up the monotony of the road.

Also, I've read a lot of the other road trip questions, but I'll certainly take any general road trip advice you've got. I've never done such a long trip by myself!

To answer questions that might come up: I have a AAA membership, I plan on tuning up my car before I go, and yes, this trip does need to be made by car.

Firing based on a background check

A friend works for a company who has recently performed a background check on all of its employees. It has instructed him to fire all employees who come back with a previous felony, even though in several cases, they knew about the charges when they hired the employees. This is happening in Indiana. Is this even legal? What rights does my friend have to oppose these firings, and what can these employees do about it?

Is anyone going to the Pierogi Fest this year? Has anyone ever been? The SO and I are considering making the trip up to the Chicago, IL/Whiting, IN area for the Pierogi Fest this year.

Airfare will certainly be our biggest expense, but I'm wondering if anyone is going this year, and has any ideas on how to save on all of the other expenses - that is, transportation, lodging, etc. We're willing to talk about sharing in any of these expenses if there are people wanting to.

We're in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area FWIW.

I'm also curious if anyone has gone to this particular festival before and has any tips - did you find that all 3 days were worth attending? What were the food prices like? Any must-sees/dos?

Thanks HiveMind!

Roadtrip from Chicago to Houston: How and what?

Chicago to Houston in one week, two lovely gals, one Camry: We're taking a road trip the week before July 4, starting in Chicago and ending in Houston. Any route tips? Things to see? Do? Quirky free attractions to see along the way? I'm in Chicago and she's from Houston but hasn't explored much. We're taking a week to drop her car back off starting in Chicago where we both are...we have 3-4 days to get down to Houston from Chicago and see what there is to see along the way. I'd rather not take big highways...but I've never ever ever been to the South or the Southeast, and would like to soak up as much as possible in the little time we have.

Things we like: hot springs, quirky roadside attractions, photography moments, rivers, THE BIGGEST ____, monuments, not spending a lot of money.

She's come up with 6 distinct itineraries that go in radically different directions, some involving Oklahoma and others involving Kentucky. I'm not sure what the best way is to get between here (Chi) and there and was wondering what kind of suggestions you have in mind.

Roadtrip: Indiana to Massachusetts

Need to transport myself and belongings from Indiana to Massachusetts....but how? I start an internship in rural Western Massachusetts (read: not at all near an airport) in October. I live in Indiana. What is the best way to get there? I do not need to plan the return trip.

I do not own a car, and I am transporting more than would be comfortable via airplane( bedding, all clothing, outdoor gear, sewing machine, books, etc), and the MA location is at least 3 hours from an airport, thus the car issue comes back into play.

Would a train or rental car be my best bet? I've never rented a car. Do you just rent it then drop it off at the destination? Is this cost effective?

Moving to Indianapolis, need neighborhood recommendations. Posting this for a friend: Mrs. Friend just accepted a job located near the SW corner of the greater Indianapolis tri-county area. They are currently in South Dakota (Brookings). Mr. Friend is looking for suggestions on where to live. They need a good school system (1 middle-school aged kid) and a house. They also need housing in Indy for grandma who is now in a HUD supported senior apt complex in Brookings. They like the college town vibe, but I think Bloomington is too far of a commute. Mr. Friend is a freelance writer/audio producer/stay-at-home dad.

Please give suggestions for good neighborhoods, MLS numbers, zip codes, etc where they can look. My friend thanks you!

Wrong State on W-2

My W-2 says I paid taxes to both Indiana and California. However, I did not live or work in Indiana at any time during the year 2007. How do I go about getting this fixed? I already have a call into my HR department and they said there's currently a 3-day turn around on answering questions. So while I wait for them I thought I'd ask Metafilter and ensure I at least know what to expect.

This is the deal. In 2006 I lived in Indiana for a couple of months before moving to California. For my 2006 taxes (i.e. those I filed by April 15th of 20007) I paid taxes to both IN and CA. This is to be expected and all went fine.

For the entire 2007 year I lived and worked in CA and I've had the same job I had in 2006. My company uses a website to manage most HR things and I updated my address / personal information back in 2006. So there's no reason for them to believe I live in IN.

On my W-2 this year it shows me paying 3k in taxes to IN and 3k in taxes to CA. This 3k to CA is about 2k short of what I was supposed to pay to CA, so I owe CA right now.

Who do I call to get this fixed? What are the right steps? I imagine I need to get my employer to admit the mistake and issue a corrected W-2. However, how do I go about getting my money back from IN? I looked at the tax forms for Indiana non-residents and I don't think they apply to my situation.

I guess I'm just curious to know how this is supposed to go down and get fixed and who I need to involve to get it fixed. Since I have a 3-day turn around time on talking w/ my HR department I was hoping to go into the conversation a bit more informed and hopefully cut down on phone tag.

Moving to South Bend, Indiana

I am looking for a good area of South Bend, Indiana to live. I am moving for a new job (which I got thanks to mefi help!!) and am looking for apartments. I do not know the area whatsoever. I have around $700 a month to spend and need it to house two people. Any thoughts on locations and what areas to avoid? I know I can browse online but do not even know what are the better (safer) areas...

ROAD TRIP!

I'm looking for things to see and do between Atlanta and Chicago, as well as a cool place to stay somewhere in between. We're taking a drive from Atlanta to Chicago at the end of the month. While I could do it all in one shot, the lady is just returning to the US after living in Italy for a year so I'm looking to reintroduce her to this country a bit on the way up. We are planning to take an architectural tour in Columbus, Indiana, and we're looking for a place to stay either the night before or the night after. It doesn't have to be near Columbus, but it shouldn't be more than a few hours off the trail. Bonus points for a place with some character or a big bathtub.
Other suggestions for places we shouldn't miss on the way up would be swell too. Columbus sounds awesome to both of us, so you can use that as a guide for what we're into (I heard about it right here on the 'filter). We like cool stuff. And off the beaten path is better.

Pronounce me this: "Cicott"

WastingThisWeek'sQuestionFilter: How do the locals pronounce "Cicott" in Lake Cicott, IN, USA? I've driven through that fair burg many many times in the last 25 years, and every time, I wonder the same thing. It's ambiguous from a phonetics standpoint, and Hoosiers don't seem to care a fig for phonetics anyway, when place names are involved. Please help me astound my traveling companions the next time I'm traversing beautiful Indiana.

Amish Cooking in Indiana along I-90?

We're looking for authentic Amish cooking in Indiana along I-90, and especially near Shipshewana, which we will be staying near. Any suggestions? I love Amish cooking because it reminds me of my Grandmother's and Aunt's cooking. We're returning from a road trip and I was hoping that we might find some authentic Amish cooking as we drive I-90 through Indiana.

Please don't suggest Das Dutchman Essenhaus or some similar place. We tried them on the way out and they weren't authentic and the food wasn't even good.

Dog-Friendly Getaway Spots Near Chicago

Do you know of any dog-friendly places for a weekend getaway within about 3 hours drive of Chicago? We need to get outta town for a long weekend and we'd like to bring our dog. We do not want to camp. We'd like to be near a lake (doesn't have to be a big one) and ideally something on the quiet side (so not the Dells or Indiana Beach). I've looked at some past threads of places to getaway in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, but I didn't find anything specifically about a pet friendly place. Help us relax and unwind with our pooch!

Indianapolis

Three weeks in Indianapolis! Your travel tips, please? I'm headed to Indianapolis in late October/early November for this seminar. Though there will not be a lot of free time, I want to make sure I do make the most of an opportunity to experience a new city. I've looked at this thread, but would like to add some more suggestions. Things I like:

-Live music, especially roots and alt.country
-Great food, especially in these categories: ethnic, chowhound/roadfood style, or unique bistro style
-Great pedestrian neighborhoods for walking around, people-watching, and shopping
-Outdoor activities and recreation spots for hiking, running, exploring, paddling, etc
-Daytrip destinations in the region
-MeFites to meet up with
-Bookstores
-Experiences I couldn't have anywhere else

I would normally ask for museums, but since we'll be visiting a bunch during the program I will probably want to avoid them during my off hours.

Thanks in advance for anything you're willing to share!

Where can I buy blocks of paneer in the Bloomington/Indianapolis area or, failing that, online? I was getting paneer at Sahara Mart in Bloomington, but they haven't had the nice frozen blocks of it in quite some time, they're just had little fried cubes.
