I have little money but an urgent need to learn the (rudimentary) ropes of InDesign and/or Drupal. Soliciting your wisdom! Thank you!
Last year it worked fine w Mac Preview. I could highlight word or phrase with transparent color, type in correction. All corrections were magically linked to a column of comments, where highlighted phrase is repeated and then comments I type appear. Not working now: Rec a better tool, educate me re: known bug, or a better idea? [more inside]
We need to hire someone to help transform HTML/MARKDOWN text into DOCX, while following finicky instructions. Also: script the process (or at least a lot of it). But we're not sure exactly what type of worker to look for. [more inside]
I'm working in Story Editor view. I have the track changes toolbar up. Track changes in all stories in on (I also tried track changes in this story), but no matter what I do, I either can't see the changes (despite using the eyeball/view changes button) or it's not registering the changes I'm making. What am I doing wrong? [more inside]
I am looking to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign) for some professional work, but I'm opposed on principle to buying a subscription because I don't need the latest features and don't want my software access held hostage to a monthly payment. Is there an affordable way to purchase the suite (perhaps an older edition) that doesn't require a student ID or a nonprofit status? I am aware of open source alternatives like Inkscape but am hoping there is a way to get the Adobe versions at a reasonable price.

My coworker asked me if I, with my superior computer skillz & home software, could do her a "little" favor. Well. You see where this is going, right? The "little" favor is not so little and I need to either come up with a compromise solution, or figure out how to gather the nerve to tell her I won't do it. [more inside]
Help! I paid a task rabbit to turn my ugly MS Word CV to indesign. (Which was, I think, dumb. I wanted LaTeX, but all the design people suggested indesign, and for some reason I listened to them...) Now it turns out that when the document was created, there were a fixed number of pages... [more inside]
I'm designing a long book in InDesign CC and I need to have endnotes (for each chapter) at the end of the book instead of footnotes on each page. According to several links (1, 2, and 3), this is not possible in InD CC. Keeping in mind that I have absolutely no scripting experience, do you know about any plugin I can download or any easy workaround for this?
I've spent the last several months studying Creative Suite 5, print production, and pre-press and now I'm trying to put it all to work to get a dozen digital art pieces (mostly made in Illustrator > InDesign, but a few also using Photoshop) print-ready for art proofs and eventually web offset printing. The images are either 6x9 or 11x17 if that matters. The list of errors I keep getting, and as much context as I can provide, are within. [more inside]

I'm working on an Adobe Indesign project with a designer friend. The project incorporates lots of text, and I want to save him the hassle of having to enter/update my constant revisions of text content. I know nothing about design, generally, or this software, specifically. [more inside]
I'm running Mavericks now, and I'm hesitant to install InDesign CS3, which was my go-to software for creating documents for our small business. I don't need anything nearly as complicated as InDesign. I need to be able to convert to PDF, add shaded boxes for clients to initial alongside text, and possibly add some photos into a document. I'm creating things like price sheets, contracts, forms, etc. There seem to be a lot of negative reviews about Pages (iWork), but it looks like that's the type of app I need (something simple, easy to learn). Are there any others I should look into?
I've taken over a graphic design project and need to update this weekly calendar image (just the schedule part, not the kids on rolling globes). But I only have the image, not the original working file. Where did it come from? [more inside]
We recently got upgraded to Windows7 here at work. (Yay?) For some reason, everything now looks like crap unless I set my resolution to the "recommended" monitor setting, 1920 x 1200. Which I did. And now the palette labels in InDesign 6 are teeny-tiny. It's especially awful in my long list of paragraph styles. I boosted the default font size through Windows, but that only affects the drop-down menus, not the labels. This is a stupid question but...please hope me! It has proven to be un-Googleable.
I need to create a user-friendly InDesign template for a client that they can re-use and customize slightly over and over. Normally I'm the one doing the customizing so I'm a little leery of my ability to produce an editable template document that will be easy for someone else to use with less InDesign knowledge. (I'm somewhere between being a beginner and an intermediate user.) Fellow designers, could you weigh in with tips, warnings, and resources? [more inside]

The market data page of the WSJ is incredibly dense and filled with interesting graphs. I've been trying to figure out what must go into the creation of such an item on a daily basis, and by perusing the careers page for Dow Jones, i've gathered some information, namely that there is extensive use at the WSJ of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and MATLAB. What I haven't figured out is what the workflow looks like for the latter part of creating those graphs. [more inside]

THE PROBLEM: Let's say you have a large store spread across several floors of a building, with many many aisles and sections. There are information kiosks located at various rooms in the store, oriented different directions. Each information kiosk has a map of the store on it, with the aisles and sections numbered and labeled, and the map rearranged and the text rotated to the viewpoint of the customer standing at the information desk. What is the most efficient way to create and update that map as sections change? [more inside]
Adobe InDesign CS4: I've got a very large document, divided into sections (chapters). Currently, there are section markers on various pages, with each section defined by a labelled submaster (so I can see from the Pages panel where each section begins and ends). When I add content to various sections, the section markers no longer align as the pages reflow (because the markers are attached to the actual page numbers and not the content). How can I fix this so that adding content to sections continues within the submaster style / section marker for that section and not reflow over the pages?

Let's say I'm an in-house graphic designer working on a sale sign template for a company with several locations. I've got Helvetica. The various locations don't. I'd like to make a fancy template in InDesign, and then create a PDF form where employees can alter small portions of the text and then print the completed sale sign at their location, still using the Helvetica. Is this possible? [more inside]
My 8 year old Dell 8600c laptop while still working, no longer has a screen and so is retired to desk work only tethered to an external monitor. Now I need a laptop that I can move around again that'll play nice with Adobe CS5, run some decent games, and will cost no more than $1000. [more inside]

Another InDesign question. You know that thing InDesign does? Let's say you just placed a Word doc into your InDesign doc and now you're applying your paragraph styles, heading styles, etc. You remove an extraneous paragraph break (because authors love their extraneous paragraph breaks and have about 100 in each article) and InDesign sees that and says, "Hey, in some universe, the last line of a paragraph has a different leading value than the other lines in the paragraph, even though it's dictated to me by the paragraph style. So I'll just go ahead and fix that for you by making this line of text a different leading value than the others. Then I'll make it not so easy to fix. You're welcome!" [more inside]

Adobe Indesign 4 trouble. My wife is working on a document with two placed images (one is a B&W TIFF, the other is a monotone EPS) on a page. If she applies transparency to one image, both appear to be desaturated. This problem just cropped up today after she has worked on essentially identical files before. [more inside]
