Our own Mp3 Experiment

We (a group of theatre/film types) are thinking of doing our own mp3 experiment, in the style of Improv Everywhere. We can handle the logistics: production of the mp3 files, email lists, filming. I have some legal concerns: [more inside]

What else have I not considered in teaching improv to young kids?

I'm going to be teaching two 30 minute sessions for children living in a homeless shelter while their parents attend a mandatory meeting. I've been a camp counselor, taught after-school programs, etc. so I have experience in this arena but I've never taught an improv class for such young kids (4-10). What games would you recommend? What else am I forgetting? [more inside]

What the hell am I doing in this bar basement at 11pm on a Sunday?

Last year, I unexpectedly fell in love with improv comedy. I raced through the classes, joined a team, and started performing shows on tiny stages throughout NYC. It's been a rewarding experience! Except: I'm a 32 year-old introvert, and hanging out with mid-20s performers feels weird AF. [more inside]

Who are the Louis Armstrong's of guitar playing?

I'm looking for examples of clever guitar solos/improv that lean towards note selection rather than technical flash. More Louis Armstrong, less Joe Bonamassa. Preferably rock/indie/pop, thinking outside the pentatonic box. Who should I be listening to? [more inside]

Yes, and, but ....

I've been involved in improv on and off for a while. I love improv, I always feel that it's presenting me with opportunities to grow as a person and see myself better. Plus, it's often very funny and liberating. [more inside]

Any advice for newbie Battledecks participant?

I've volunteered to participate in a Battledecks competition at an upcoming library conference. There's a twist this year, as we're doing is as a team (well, duo), which makes it even more of a challenge. Any suggestions from folks who've done this before, or from those with improv experience? My partner and I will have some opportunities for a practice/dry-run before we head to the conference -- help and thanks!

Trolling IRL: Asshats, does the ass come first — or the hat?!

Ok, I'm studying a new improv role and really struggling to capture my character's essence. How do I act like a subtle but ruthless aggressor... without swerving into TV dominatrix land? Think strong, machiavellian, sadistic and contemptuous. With a kick of prima donna. [more inside]

How do I get useful things out of people in an audition scenario?

Best place to take an improv class in NYC for a nonactor?

I'd like to take an improv class for various reasons unrelated to acting -- to think better on my feet, to be more spontaneous, less shy in groups, etc. I live in NYC where I suspect even an intro class will be filled with experienced actor types. This is fine, I guess, but I wonder if anyone can recommend a place where regular people like me might be in the mix. I'm also in my 40s, which makes me feel like I'll be too old, but I'll hopefully get over that soon enough. Thanks for any ideas.

Improvisers, how do you prepare?

At first I thought good improv meant walking onstage with absolutely no plan and just reacting to whatever happened - the cue word or whatever. After lots of very awkward scenes, I heard someone mention going onstage with an emotion in mind and I was like WAIT A MINUTE - you can have a strategy? So I've gone up for exercises with a couple of concrete ideas, such as an activity to start with and it definitely helped a lot. And then I started wondering if I could practice improv by myself. I need a suggestion for a location the size of this stage.

I joined an improv group through meet-up.com. Our current practice space is part of a set of mall storefronts that have been converted into a haunted house. At the end of summer they are going to resume haunting folks and we will no longer have practice space. Any thoughts on where in Portland OR. we might be able to find relatively private rooms that have seating and an open area that are either free or extremely cheap? [more inside]
